Its just the people your with. Tell them to finish the enemies first. If we removed chests guildwars economy would take a BIG Blow. If you dont like it, find more mature players and tell them before starting the instance, to kill first and chest later

Chests give out random weapon stats. Rare weapons should be available to EVERYONE. Not just greedy horders and rich players.

Unless you want to start paying 100k+50ecto for a rare item that isn't even perfect mods, the chest need to stay how they are. If they only appeared after you killed mobs than that would ruin all of the chest runs in the game, and people would not like that at all.

Lame that chests need keys. Would be nice to craft them, and maybe warriors can get a bash skill where they beat on the chest to open it :P

Either you've never been on a chest run, or you haven't ID'd a rare item recently... I don't care how often rare items drop, 9/10 times they're either a Rod a Focus or a Staff. Rods/Focus' serve no purpose at all, Staff mods sell for bugger all nowadays and the chances that you actually find a perfect skillrecharge/casttime bonus' are... about... well you have more chance of winning the lottery without playing it. On the outside chance that a weapon does have decent mods to salvage. 75% of that time you get Iron/Wood or the other mod.
Thargor, things like that happen too often agreed there. But then again, some people are just too impatient and lure 3 groups anyway. "wait for the patrol to leave" *warrrior runs off and agroes the patrol and the group*.
The worst situation i've seen was when a chest appeared in the middle of the 4 monks near the start in FoW. We all decided to run in grab the chest and flea. 30 seconds later, 3 people are dead. Why? Because the retard of a healer monk decided to just stand at the side and watch.
The joys of playing a monk really, if someone is that stupid you just refuse to heal them from there on, if that doesn't deter them from still running in, there loss.

true. rare items are mostly crap. remove chests and make rare items more profitable would have been to be done both.

Be more specific or selective when forming your party.
It's one of the better gold sinks in the game.

@OP The problem you described is NOT a problem with the chest system. It's a problem with the idiot system. i.e. There's too many idiots.

Agreed.
BUT, the chest system caused the idiot problem in the first place.
The worst one for me so far was in the Kurzick elite mission. we get to the area with the vine gates and right near the end there is a chest and 3 guys lose their minds and run for it. Whole party wipe due to the 25+ wolf guys that popped up and they drug back to the rest of the group. Nothing like wasting 2 hours on a purple chest tha dropped 3 straw effigies!

why not add a third option about the chest:
3.- remove the chests only and only from mission places, they would not appear in the mission in that area, but when you return to that area as explorable then the chests will appear, of course randomly

in that case, lets get rid of the W/Mo combination because it just causes people to be idiots.
seriously, good player + chest does NOT make an idiot. only bad players will be stupid enough to agro just for a chest.

Yes remove chests from missions, NOT from game, after beating the game with 4 toons you need something to do chest run's is one of does, farming used to be another, so if you take away the chests you will more or less drive ppl to other games, it's just about the only thing left in factions to do besides farming for materials.

ppl are very dumb + it has nothing to do with chests. If chests were removed from the game, expect to have empty districts in every town. Many ppl play just for the chest runs. If the chests are removed ppl would leave + stop playing. Lets face facts, the addition of chests was done because even finding a purple item back in the days, took hours + hours of grinding (some ppl enjoy doing that, a huge amount don't). Granted half of the purples + golds suck but at least you don't have to farm your ass off to get a sucky item now like most ppl did before chests were introduced. Making chests random spawns after killing a mob? So it may or may not spawn right? Thats more boring grind.
As for the ppl who whine about rares being rare + more valuable, why don't you go farm for ectos or rare skinned weapons in elite mission? If you want to be filthy rich work for it. Don't whine about it. Complaining amounts to nothing.

Er, I'd think it would be a good thing for non-perfect rare items to actually have value again. I don't know about everyone else, but I miss the days when I didn't have to sell nearly all of my gold weapons to merchants. I don't even always bother to buy keys just because the chance of getting a perfect gold weapon is so slim. I liked the old chests more, without keys and not restricted to purple and gold items.

There are stupid people and, as others have pointed out, that is not ANet's fault or anything.
Having said that, if you can prevent the stupidity from ruining a game I say do so. Here's my suggestion: "You have fought too recently to do that." If you attack, cast a spell, or are attacked or have an offensive spell cast on you, you cannot use salvage kits or ID kits. Why not make it so you cannot use chests either? If they rush in and get attacked, they won't even be able to use it until the battle is over. You've eliminated the point in trying.
I think people tend to rush in and grab the chests because they think after the battle is over their teammates will rush ahead and leave them with no time to open it or pick up their loot and be left trying to catch up. Even if that isn't the case, people kind of get trained to expect that.

Only way I can see the chests being modded to prevent stupid people would be to make it that you had to make the chest safe from the mobs around it... Basicly what Undivine said...
Anyway if you're having that much trouble with stupid PUGs, take henchies...
They never open chests and the big mission that people are mainly using for chest runs (I only know of the Nahpui run.) is easily henchable. Just take your time. If you just have to get the Master reward get a bunch of guildies.
