in-game 'policemen'
After spending a lot of time in Shing Jea Monestary last night, I think it is time for this. I think A-net should have some of us players (maybe voted on from the fansites?) as designated policemen. Whether our policemen identity should 'hidden' or not from everyone else, I'm not really sure. I think that when someone spams the chat windows, or curses way too much, or puts W*T*S in the general chat, or is found to be scamming, etc...that person should be fined a certain amount of gold (which will increase with each offense). If a person tries to bypass this by not keeping any gold on the character, I guess either there will be a way to automatically take the money from storage, or from another player on the account. There's really no reason not to put this in; with most of the players here I'm sure they'd never even get fined once. But there are a LOT of little kids and really immature players - I'm sure everyone who was in Shing Jea last night would agree, and it's time something is done. It would not only be somewhat of a money sink for Anet, but it would also cut down on a lot of offensive behavior.

Well there wouldn't be much of an ego, because the identities of the policemen would probably be hidden. And they wouldnt be getting the fine money, Anet would be, so there isnt really an incentive to fine people unless they are really doing something wrong.

It's just a game, whoever spends enough time in towns to listen to little 12 year olds type in caps random and rude things should just move on and not care. Anyone with a life would, anyways. There is no need for policemen...

I'd fine people just for the sake of fining them.

Regardless if its known or not... I can see it now.
"Watch this... you just lost 500 gold! Don't believe me? There's 2k gone!"
"What? 35k for an IDS? You nOOb! Here, I'm sure you can do without 20k..."
Players shouldn't have power over other players, because they you institute power over your peers. You need to be seperate from your peers if you have power over them.
If you have an account (i.e. 99.9% of the people here) you shouldn't have a "power" role over them. Conflicting interests.
Also, personally, I don't think anyone who isn't directly employeed or condonded by ANet should have power in the game. Essentially when you are given direct power over another player, you are able to dictate rules. And thusly, ANet should monitor said people.

The main issue was addressed, Guild Wars has fallen into a state of 'lawlessness.' Go into any town or outpost and ask "How many of you have read the EULA?" and hear the the howling from everyone in the area saying that A.Net doesn't listen, or care. Riiiiiiight
I reported a player for pretending to be a 'policeman' and got a reply saying that they'll investigate...If this gets implimented, there will have to be a way to tell if a 'policeman' is or isn't one at all.
Also, if you do become a 'policeman,' I can just imagine that people will get a hold of your name an then you'll be getting tons of PMs from random little kids saying "LAWLERZ, BAN J03 D()UGH CUZ H3 A SC4MM3R!!!!!!!11!!!eleven!!1one"
...Overall, it would be veri useful; /signed by Veripare Star

eh runescape has player mods... and yet they seem to have it worse off than the gw community, it just doesn't work, hiring baby sitters for a game would just cost money, giving normal people power than can be abused it just wrong. Then you have the whiners begging to be the police too.
Everyone here should be happy if there is a real annoyance their is an ignore list, you don't have anything like zoneing away, or real ignore in real life.

I really hate goin thru the trouble of reporting scammers to not be able to know if "my claims" were validated and any lashings handed out.
I do not like the fellow gamers policeman idea, sorry. Too ripe for abuse, would open a whole new can of worms.
/unsigned.
Instead Public Executions; would put the fear in the griefers. maybe a warning the first offense then OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! (sorry for caps...got a lil excited... whew). Hmm .....maybe I would like to be an in-game policeman.... Do we get guns?

There's clearly a difference between trying to rip someone off, and scamming people. Ripping people off isn't illegal - but putting 35 gold in the trade window when you're supposed to put 35k is, or at least it should be.

Aweful idea. I don't like the fact that I can be trying to sell something to someone and they don't like the price so they take 20k out of my storage or something.
If you see a problem, report it to ANET thats what they are for. Don't suggest things that could easily mess up the game :-\

Oh, you misunderstand. This wasn't an example of what a "policeman" would do. But it's an example of the mentality of people who play this game, I've seen the exact example (well, without the taking away of 20k part).
All I'm trying to say is people tend to get mad regardless of whatever the situation is. Chances are, for everything said or done, there is someone in the game who hates you for it.
Now, if you give people power...
Many people are innocent or at least benevolent. The small minority of the population are actually "predators." It's in everyones nature, yes, but often enough not a dominant personality.
Though, there are people who are, for lack of a better word, assholes. They might take a situation, and for whatever reason, jump down your throat for it.
Sometimes you can identify these people. Sometimes you can't. Sometimes power brings this out in a person.
All I'm saying is, if you pick a person from within the GW population, no matter how much you screen, a percentage are going to abuse the power.
If they have characters, they are now going to have to choose between playing the characters or being the policeman. That's going to cause conflict.
Either they play the "police" when its convenient to them (often enough when someone annoys them and "inspires" them to lay down the law?), or they play their character and shirk their responsibilities.
A policeman needs to be only a policeman, a player needs to be only a player. The more you blur those lines, the more you make room for abuse.
