Be A "Merchant" Option For Player
Problems:
1) I hate shouting, "WTS...items" in the open. I know players hate it when sellers flooded their screen with, "WTS...items"
2) Selling and Buying items from other players are very complex and emitionally draining.
When I am the seller- I get people mocking my prices, some of them are painful.
When I am the buyer- I always feel like I was cheated, scammed, and violated.
3) Some towns and posts have more people than others. Created a complex maze of sellers and buyers
Solution:
-Create a Merchant option for players that want to be a Merchant.
-Create a Merchant Area in town and outpost, espically in remote places like Jungle area.
-The Player-Merchant can be locked into a location similiar to NPC, so this way they can't move around. Give them option to set prices and layout similiar to NPC.
Benefits:
Imagine that I want to buy a nice shield. All I have to do is travel to this town or outpost, look into the "Merchant Area" I would see rows of "Player-Merchants". I can walk over to any Player-Merchant and window shop for items that I wanted. I can buy/sell/trade and haggle prices, similiar to NPC
It would eliminate:
-Finding a buyer and/or seller.
-Eliminate random broadcast (shout), sellers can chat about other things.
-Reduce price inflation
-Reduce scam artist
-Populate remote outpost, it will give people or reason to travel to these places.
-Decrease the cities that is overpopulated with people, such as ascalon city, droknar, lion arch, Temple.
Some of the potential pitfalls and solutions:
-Sellers would camp out take over a space for other sellers.
Sellers have to pay lot fee per hours, like 500g per hour.

If the merchants are stationary and not going to say what they are selling before you view their wares, how do you know what they have?

by...um...viewing their wares?
I do want some sort of merchant system so that it is actually possible to sell stuff without spending 10 billion lines of chat to do it. I don't entirely know what you're suggesting, but it sounds like a sort of trader NPC for any item, or perhaps a collection of trader NPCs for certain item types. The only problem would be, how does one effectively calculate value with such a system?

But that would make the system worse than what it already is because you won't be able to find what you are looking for... say you are looking for a green... say, for example, Geoffers Bulwark. Now say that only 1 in every 2000 player merchants has it, (probably less than that in game but this is just an example,) now you are going to have to look through 2000 merchants to find it unless you get really lucky and find the right one. This would take much longer and take a much greater effort to find said item... trade improvements are meant to improve trade not make it take longer...
One possible improvement would be the highly sought after auction house but the OP's idea is just as feasible

I'm not sure about the specifics of the OP's idea, but I would like to see some sort of "merchant profession" ... maybe as a secondary only, that would allow players to become the sellers (for weapons, trophies, etc = the stuff npc merchants don't sell). I'd be for just about anything to reduce the flood of \/\/TS / \/\/TB crap we currently have to wade through if looking to buy/sell something.
