Default I think they should remove the credit roll at the end of Factions

No offence to the people who made the game, as I believe people should be credited where credit is due, but nothing takes me out of the game experience more than a blatant "you are playing a game" sign scrolling down my monitor.

It just doesn't seem right in this type of game, and looks severely out of place. I feel like I just beat an arcade game. MMO games shouldn't have credit reels, IMO.

I was actually very amused and laughed a lot when I saw that credit reel, so I wouldn't mind them keeping it.

But I can see where you're coming from, and perhaps an NPC could be added that let you view the credits. Perhaps something along the lines of, "You, heroes, have saved Elona from darkness. However, respects must be paid to those who built Elona from the ground up during its origin so long ago. Do you wish to pay your respects to these people?" Hit yes, show the credits. Lol.

I don't mind whatever they decide to do with the credit reel, as I'll still look at it (I know, OMG!) somewhere, but I can see how that would bother you and possibly some others.

So my suggestion: make the credits an optional viewing through an in-game NPC in an area like the Divine Path.

A credit reel is needed. If you created factions, would you want CREDIT for making a kickass game like this? Of course you would. That's EXACTLY what they are looking for in putting a credit reel at the end of the game. They worked hard creating the 3-D graphics, storyline, and all the other things they put into Guild Wars Factions. They deserve to be credited, end of story.

Hrm....for some reason that all of a sudden made me think that, if a credit roll is removed, they could name the nameless NPCs in the Divine Path after the creaters, and when you talk to them, it tells you what each one did.

Though, I don't mind the credits myself.

This is true. Lucky for us, GW is a linear game rather than an MMO, and as such a credit roll belongs.

No one forces you to watch it. You can map out/exit to Kaineng at any time.

Of course, they could move it somewhere else like the log in screen, but no one would click on it =/

I think dances from Napoleon Dynamite and Pulp Fiction, and /guitar in setting which you'd assume lacks electricity says "you are playing a game" just as much as a credits roll

nobody would read it if the credits were given to the NPC... It seems to be fine just the way it is.

Why do I always get the Anet torch bearers coming into my posts telling me nothing they do is wrong?

To the guy who said "it's linear". Yes, it is. But, can I play it single player, offline? No. Why might that be? Cause it's an MMO. It doesn't matter how the story line is, it doesn't change the fact that it is a massively multiplayer online game. The credit roll doesn't belong. Why isn't there one in Prophecies? Diablo? Diablo 2?

To the guy who asked if I had made the game, would I want credit: of course. That's why it is written in the game manual. I don't need to slap it in the faces of the players.

It just takes me completely out of the gaming experience, which is pretty much contrary to the whole "fantasy" aspect of games.

I disagree. Endgame credit rolls are a time-honored tradition. They give me a happy little hooray-I-beat-the-game feeling.

I wish they'd add one to Prophecies, either after Hell's Precipice or after The Titan Source.

Maybe more like the bearers of common sense who are cynical jerks?

Lots of ideas get posted on this forum. Theres good ideas, then theres these:

1) Unneccessary
2) Pointless
3) Contrary to the theme or idea of the game
4) Just too difficult to implement at the moment
5) Too far ahead of its time

I think your idea falls into category 1 and 2.

Idea: Remove the credit roll
Reason: Takes away from the experience, doesnt belong, feels out of place.

Now its not a BAD idea. I agree the credit roll can be annoying after 3-4 times. But really...your reasons are all personal preference.

I'll give you a better idea:

Give us the ability to turn off the credits after seeing roll once completely.

Oh and as for telling you that "you're playing a game".

4th wall? Thats a pretty cool article. I'd not heard that term before, but I guess its like the "4th law" of comics(characters that break that law are the ones that talk to the reader, or people in movies that talk to the audience).
Back to OP: Lyra's suggestion of making it optional after first view is probably the best solution(its the middle ground) in this argument. While it does take away from immersion, if you put it on an npc, most people won't watch it. I haven't gotten that far in factions, when I do I guess I'll have a more informed opinion. For now I'll simply say that we should let them have their 15 minutes, one way or the other.

Yes the whole 4th wall applies to comics, theater, video games, tv, movies, anything that requires some suspension of disbelief so a character's story progresses.
Its very post-modern, and kinda cliche now

I really think Prophecies needs a credit roll...but i dont see it happening, the story just doesnt end well.

Who said anything like that? But you're saying "take out the credits", and you don't really have a leg to stand on when it comes to that.

Why not in Prophecies? Maybe it didn't occur to them to stick it in. Who knows? D and D2 are irrelevant; while they aren't MMOs either, Blizzard made those, and as such, they have no bearing on this discussion at all.

No, it isn't an MMO (it's not massive) but I'm not going to get into that yet again. Don't pretend you know "facts" when you're spouting out your ass.

The credit roll belongs in this game because it is, indeed, a game. It has a clear beginning and a clear ending, and, like 99% of other games, it has a list of credits at the end.

Plus, no one forces you to stand there and watch it. Why else would you be standing in Divine Path for so long but to wait for something like that?

Basically you're saying that you won't spend 5 (optional) minutes of your life to watch the credits of the people that spent countless hours to make this game for you. How about learning some respect, no? This is a game, it had a start, it had a finish (at least this stroy arch), so credits are due. I wouldn't want to do all that work and not get credit for it :/
