Frogeaters or Cronogman, I believe. I love those books. Make sure to put in some greenseer abilities and animal control, in that case.

MOVING ON!
Before giving my opinion, I would like to point out that I am VERY critical of new ideas and can almost always find something that would make it not work or some aspect that would severely unbalance the game.
Holy crap, this is quite possibly the first suggested class that I want to play. I'm truly amazed by the uniqueness of this idea. While your images make me think of a homosexual Aquaman (wait, wasn't he gay already? nm), I'm really impressed so instead of blatant criticism, I'll offer a few constructive ideas.
#1) In order to keep from stepping on the elementalist's toes, Weather mastery skills should probably work like nature rituals and not do direct damage to enemies but change the conditions of the area for everyone. This would also allow the Retiree(tee-hee) to have skills to make himself immune to the effects and thus make it quite useful as a secondary profession as well. Overall, this attribute line could use a little more development although I think it has serious potential.
#2) Agility seems like it has merit but I think you should try to develop it further. At the moment, it seems sort of like a glorified tactics line. Give it some more definition and be creative/unique.
#3) It would seem to me like both the polearm and the net would be very difficult to use one handed and so much more so if they were used at the same time. Maybe make both of them two handed and give the polearm some defensive skills and the net some offensive skills (like you mentioned barbed net). That would also push players towards developing one skill line or another instead of trying to max everything in order to make the character fully functionable.
#4)Give more info. What are his vulnerablities? What are his counter-classes? How much energy/energy regen does he have? How would his skills work as a secondary profession?
Overall Score: 10/10 under the condition that you keep working on it. This class suggestion has more potential IMO than the rest of them combined. Don't worry so much about the artwork as Anet will do that anyways. Don't feel like you have to come up with particular skills so much as general skill ideas.
Keep up the awesome work.

Brilliant. Well thought out.
Need a couple skills to use the net as a snare too, and a few attack based skills that require the target to be "netted" to work as well.

Just 1 complaint, I didnt think you could hold and use properly a trident or sythe (spelling) with one hand. Unless these weapons are very small, the net would just get in the way . I like the idea though, just need to change the whole "i can use a trident with one hand" thing

Eh.. it's a spear. Scythe would be overdoing it, but a trident = a spear with 3 prongs. I don't see the big deal.

ok, well thanks for the comments. I had planned on reworking some of the skills and such a while ago but this thread kind of died so i let it go. I will get to work on it right away.
and about the pictures, i just wanted to give people a general idea of what the guy would look like.

New Weapon ideas...
I did a search and didn't find anything that really represents my idea, so here it goes. If it is a repeat, please accept my apology.
I would like to see some different melee weapons included that would deal different damage at medium ranges.
For example: A spear - Would be 2-handed, deal as much damage if not slightly more than hammer, but with limited defensibility and speed. The range could be 12 feet. It would have a very high piercing percentage. This weapon would be very realistic and allow some new options for hand-to-hand combatants as well as tactical situations.
Also, a great-sword or bastard-sword. This would be a 2-handed sword, deal higher slashing damage at the cost of defense and manueverability. Maybe make players not able to run as fast with this weapon equipped or something.
Finally, a poleaxe or polearm. This would be axe-like deep wound damage as well as a medium range (6-8 feet). You could have this weapon have high damage, medium speed, and better defense than spear. But, you could add a 10% knockdown to it and it would make it very effective as well.
The added range of these weapons would give the advantage that an opponent would have to be closer than you to hit you, but be slower and with decreased defense.
I just find the weapon ranges and effectiveness to be slightly unrealistic and force melee to be only nose-to-nose or spell/bow range. I'd like a better mid-range option as well. Most of the effectiveness (especially in PvP) is firmly in the spellcaster's hands. There is very little reward for good battlefield tactics or melee skills.
Just a thought.

He is talking about a character class. I'm just strictly talking about medium range melee weapons for various classes.
Also, the pictures show a Trident, which is a great idea, but would be very different in fighting style than a spear or true polearm.
Anyway, I just thought I would put a couple thoughts out there for feedback.

Merged the two threads. Weapons can be discussed here being that they're relevant to a new class, and decent suggestions as a whole.

Oh, haven't checked this thread in a while. But yes, you hit it right on the nose. That is how I pictured the retiarii being portrayed. I think I will add that big picture to the front page.
