Some people dont EVER pick drops up. They just run by and leave them.

Its a bit pointless letting them go to waste if they sit there for 5 minutes not being picked up.

That could be 100+ gold worth of material just sitting there unclaimed.

It's not an easy thing to balance. But ya, giving them a claim window after a fight would be nice, (or in one, I mean, if that little thing distracts you enough to kill you then you really shouldn't be on a team) but I'm still for people being able to claim your items after 5 mins (it was just me and the tank one time, the guy who the green had dropped for left, so we were laughing at our frenzied clicking spree to see who could get the green).

Now see that wouldn't change. If that warrior left without using the /claim command then the items would still be on the ground for others to pick up.

This suggestion would be better than nothing.

But I agree that the best solution is to get rid of the time limit and keep people's drops reserved for them forever.

This is a great idea; I would love to be able to get drops when Im dead. Ive only once had someone run off with an ecto, but for other times, too. Sometimes you'll die during a mission, and while waiting for a res, you scan the area to see if you've gotten any drops, and I would like to be able to pick those things up while Im dead not doing anything, instead of when Im alive in the middle of a battle.

And, also: Would this work on unclaimed items in the area? Such as ones that have gone from "Assigned to ::Character name::" to whoever gets it. And ones from people that have either dc'ed, or left before they picked them up(which also fall under blank items).

/signed
If the command is put into use; I hope they start allowing you to id items and such when you're dead, also.

Edit: I didnt read above before I submitted this one :s, but how about just booting the time limit only on items purple and above(rare crafting being above as well)? Because I dont think someones going to put up frozen soil and let his teammates die over 26 Tanned hide squares or a pair of White 12^50 kris daggers : p

You died, you didn't pick it up, so why should you get it?
I dealed 99% damage to the boss while solo farming but I died. Do I get the drop too?
I dealed 99% damage to this ele in AB but I died. Does she die?

Some people also leak gold every step they walk with stacks of 250 ectos in their storage. I don't see us getting a chance to get them?
I think the last thing you want is to turn it into "WHOEVER GETS IT FIRST" pickfest.

I think that sounds like the best, or at least the most sensible to implement at this point.

Maybe if drops just don't become public when you're dead it would solve a lot of problems? Also during fights (in case they go a REALLY long time).

But yes, any addition to the current system to prevent people from raging is always welcome.

I dont quite understand your point?

Are you agreeing that people should be able to pick up items after a given time if their not collected?

Or disagreeing?

I like the claim function, but I can see the point about how we shouldn't be able to pick up drops when we're dead. If they claim function only worked to mark your assigned items as yours permanently, and then delete those items if you leave the map or get disconnected, that would be fine. That way:
  • The item assignment timer can't expire so your items can't get stolen.
  • Items you don't care about will still be unassigned after the normal time limit expires.
  • You can't cheat by picking up stuff while you're dead.
  • If someone wants to get you killed and wait around forever, hoping you'll quit and your stuff will be unassigned, if you claimed the items, they will disappear when you leave, thus allowing you to get the last laugh on the scammer.
Much less scamming potential.
Also, if you can use the claim function again to bring up your box of claimed items you have not collected, you can un-claim them if you feel the need to do so. Overall the claim function is a good idea!
