This is the way i see it:
With the Jade orbs, you had a chance to collect all the orbs, and then theres a chance for you to see the emperor.
This requires a lot more effort. Do the quests, gather the materials, then show up at the designated time. What happens if you only have 230 orbs and the emperor showed up? You end up with 230 orbs you have no use for ( i still have leftover orbs).
The Dragon/Tengu event took a lot more time and timing to get.
With the Pumpkin/Hats, theres only one chance to see the Mad King. But thats all you need. Just show up.
----------------------------
Theres just no justification to extend such an event. How can you hold Anet accountable for your choices and your circumstances? That just doesnt make sense to me.
Its not about "ELITENESS". How can a useless hat that takes up space in your storage be "elite" ?
-------------------
A Little Story:
I was in NYC a little while back for a special event at Nintendo World Store (rockafeller center). I had a chance to meet Shigeru Miyamoto himself and get his autograph.......If i had camped at the store overnight.
Now....i was NOT gonna camp overnight there just to get his autograph. I like Shigeru Miyamoto, and i think hes one of the most important men in the history of gaming, but..... >.< I had no one to camp with and i was ill prepared and equipped for it. I DID however show up the next morning very very early.
Regardless of my hours of waiting in line, I did not meet Mr. Miyamoto and I did not get an autograph.
It was my choice to not camp there overnight in line. Circumstances prevented me and I paid the price.
How can I demand to get his autograph, when its my fault that i didnt show up there? How can it be their fault? Why should they be obligated to indulge me?!!??!
------------------------
Another story:
I want a Nintendo Wii. I didnt preorder ANYWHERE. Work and various chores and housework has prevented me from getting to a video game store or even TRU. >.< Now preorders are gone. So im pretty screwed come release date.
I know this. I'm prepared for it, since i can wait.
Now....is it Gamestop/TRU/Best Buy's fault that i didnt show up to get a pre-order?
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I simply dont understand the logic of this thread.

/not signed,
i started playing GW about 3 months before the '05 halloween event, and it was my first venture into an online game like this, so i honestly had no idea that they even did special events. the week of halloween came around and i just didnt play for that week for whatever reason. well when i got back on a lot of people were running around with pumpkin heads. and i was shocked. i started asking people how they got them, and they told me that it was a special item for the halloween event. i didnt want to sound like a moron so i said "cool" and went about my business. sure i wanted a pumpkin head, and sure i kicked myself in the arse for not being there. but i accepted the fact that i wasnt there so i didnt get the pumpkin head. i just made a note to myself to try and make it to the next special event. so i kept my eyes open and i seen on the GW website they were having a wintersday event. so i tryed my hardest to make it there to get one of the hats. i ended up getting both, and i was happy for it, because i knew i had been somewhere when something special happend. Long story short, just try to show up and get the special item, if you dont get it then tough cookies, and better luck to you next time. *end rant*

The above would be my answer, go afk for 3 hrs and you have one and if your friend really wanted one enough for to get you to start a petition I don't see why they didnt put more effort into getting one. He was there for 24hrs, mustve slept in that time, borrow 1hr of sleep ^^
I don't know how the bandwidth affects it where you are but for me guild wars uses about 3mb/hour when I'm playing

Why do only kids who are online all the time get the hats, and people who actually have other stuff to do in the middle of the week don't?
The mad king only gave the hats every 3 hours, and only within a timespan of like 7 seconds. Also, there were 2 different hats so actually you needed to stay online at LEAST 3 hours (that is if you logged in the EXACT moment the hats were given)
First, not seeing the event sucks big time for people who are busy in the middle of a week, and second, they don't have the oppertunity of getting an item they'll never get in any other way.
There are some people who say 'the hats will be worth nothing then', but to me and most people out there, it's not about value. Ít's a cool mask you can wear in outposts, and it's just nice to have something like that in your inventory except the normal armor.
And then there's the kids who were trick-or-treating :P

i mean no disrespect in what i am about to say, but i just dont understand how you can say this. sure i may only be 19 years old, and some may classify me as a kid but i had to manage trigonometry and pre-calculus, technical physics, essay composition, and architectural engineering work and i still got both of the hats. i mean sure i sacrificed a few hours of sleep, but that was my decision and i got my hats because of it. if someone didnt want to lose sleep then obviously the hats werent that important to them in the first place. now i understand that some people may have had to go away on a business trip or whatnot but that is just one of the many things in life that keeps us from getting some artificial thing that makes us happy. that is how life is take it or leave it. /end rant

With all due respect, GW is a game, not real life. If we're going to apply real life rules, then there should be no spells/magic, account banning should be permanent, and there should be jails/bounties for people who break the "law." While we're at it, one death should end a character, and there should be no rezzing. But this isn't a social simulation, it's a fantasy RP/MMO game.
I just fail to see the resistance to allowing people who make the effort to be able to get the hat through the time of the event even if they were unable to be in-game during the 10 second intervals when the hats were handed out. To reiterate, I'm certainly not saying anyone should be able to get any hat whenever they please. I'm not saying we should give previous hats to everyone just in case. As I see it, this is for future events, to make them more accessible and enjoyable to the whole community.

The times for Mad King Thorn are usually at the busiest times as well 12/3/6/9 and it makes it hard for those who have to work. I have highschool, a house to clean, dinner to make, and my sister to take out to trick or treat, I've no time to play GW on halloween and it makes it hard for us who look forward to this.
Please if you have a heart sign!

Look people were upset that they could not get the Santa hats as well on new years day. but the select few that had no life and played during new years well they got something for it. No harm in that. I congratulate them on getting it when they could... and now I know If I want one to not go doing something for new years and play the game instead. If It does not matter to me, well then I go and do what I want to do otherwise... I do not expect Anet to cater to my wanting to do OTHER things sometimes... Anet supports their players, and has good incentives to keep their players in game for holidays. Great. more power to them. But why should they reward the people NOT playing at the time of a give out? that makes no sense at all...

As much as i like to support the OP, i know its not gonna happen so its moot really.
I work as well and actually when on to take leave and worked out the timezones and afked, multiple double logs (got 4 hats in one session) to get Hats for all my 9 PvE toons.
It just feels sick having to come here and read the disregard for others, you got to make your own plans to get what you want these days.
But seriously, please think of those who do work or dont live in the US for that matter.

Who's saying everyone should be given the hats just for the heck of it to make them feel all warm and cozy? AFAIK, the general idea (and what I favor) is for something like what ANet actually did for the Dragon Festival -- i.e. make the hats available for a week around/after the event (appearances), so that people who were unable to attend could still be a part of it. What's wrong with this? It's not like signing up for GW today and being presented a santa hat when you enter the game -- it's taking into account that GW is a game and REAL life is real.

no kidding......a lot of people dont seem to understand that all you need to do is afk in the circle.......how much easier could they make this for you? I mean in the Dragon Festival you had to collect all those orbs, which generally meant doing several quests and maybe a little farming, then the afk part.....
Really, the fun in these events is participating. AFK if you must, but don't complain if you don't get catered to your exacting specification.

And how come everyone that is /notsigning isn't even commenting on the people who have 10 characters (1 for each primary profesion), and did play (all day in fact), yet didn't get one of each hat for every character because the mad king only came 9 times.
He gave out 2 hats. There are 10 professions right now. Therefore, some people would need 20 hats, so, he should come at least 20 times. I really don't see what ArenaNet was thinking as far as this. Were they trying to make it imposible for the people who like to collect event things? Sure seems like it.
I can see where you guys are comming from as far as "If you weren't there, you don't get it", but I was there, and I still don't get it? And yes, they might have 0 Armor, but they are still a nice thing to have.
Just because I don't wear them when killing stuff doesn't mean I don't wear them at all. And just because I can wear the hat on one character doesn't mean that I'm not going to want to wear it on a different character.
I seriously think ArenaNet should put in a collector for at least one day, to make up for this. Or better yet, do what someone else said. As long as you attend the event with one character, then you do /holiday or /hat or something (on any character, even ones that didn't attend the event) and then you get the hat, similar to the preorder items.
I'm sure they could do it for the past events too. Just make it so that it checks to see if you have a event item in one of your character's inventory that is customized for that character. If it is, then you have that hat unlocked on your account for any of your characters from that day forward.
This will also help take care of the problem with inventory (that some players have). They don't need to keep the holiday hats in their inventory forever, but they can still have the hat.
Ya, this idea will take extra time and stuff to be implimented, but it will make the events that much better. And then we can even show that we were at the event, but with our new characters too!

Here's a novel idea:
Friend A doesn't have to work/go to school/whatever on Halloween. Friend B does. Friend B also trusts Friend A with his account. Friend B tells Friend A his e-mail/pass and Friend A gets him a hat. 3 hours later, Friend A gets his own hat. 2 days later, Friend B is not whining and moaning like a sissy on the guildwarsguru.com forum and everyone is happy.
While I agree that it sucks horribly not to be able to get everything that you want in life; but that is life. Life = a stream of disappointments with tiny bits of happiness sprinkled sparingly on it. Anybody mature enough to play this game without being banned for excessive Terms of Service violations should know this already.
Instead of moaning about it; make a compromise; and if you happen to be somebody with 8 character slots used up, with no friends, no girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband/"life partner", that works 16 hours a day; I guess you have something to whine about.

Oh my god...
Shut down your PC. Step outside. Go visit someone. Mow the lawns.
You don't "need" 20 hats that do nothing.

Right now its proof that you were at the event but if it was at a collector it would turn into just some hat.
I've been busy for every other event and missed all those items. Would I like them? Of course but I'm not going to make some petition to devalue the items for others.
Call me an elitist if you want, I may be but I just don't think items that have no effect on the game need to be handed out just because you couldn't be there.
All in all this is pretty silly. Why not just give all the CE bonuses to everyone while we are at it?
I'm sorry you missed the event but there will be others. Besides even if they did add this item so many people would get them that no one would wear them anymore and the point of this would be ruined.
Now I would /sign an extended halloween event or somthing but it seems too late for that now.

Hmm you know I think every single one of those /notsigned posts are right. You people who didn't partcipate in the event shouldn't get a hat. Damn straight we the people who sat through the dumb jokes, the stupid paper rock game, and the mad king says game deserve it. To hell with the rest of you lazy "I want it all" people get on line and be there are the event.
Here's another suggestion for next year, instead of giving hats out to anyone in the circle, why not only give out hats to people who participate. Seems like a fair deal, after all, So many people are saying that if you weren't at the event you don't deserve the hat, its to show you were at the event, not AFK at the event. Putting your character there and going out to do something else isn't being at the event its being somewhere else and leaving your computer on.
You kinda wonder how many more pissed off gamers there would be if ANet took that kind of advice and made it so only people who participated in the even could get a hat. I guess all the people who went AFK or went district jumping might be a little more inclined to say, "Yeah, maybe a little more leeway is whats needed for holidays." After all folks, aren't holidays meant to be happy and sharing the fun with everyone?
As for the quest collector idea, I see the problem with having to run around collecting a hundred fangs or orbs or something, but i'm talking about a single shot quest like delivering a bag of candy corn out to Granny's house to get your hat. Something short, in the spirit of the holiday, and something people can do in their spare time and at any level (Its suppose to be fun, not a challenge people. Go do green item hunting if you want a challenge).

I have something for each character... And am perfectly happy with it... by the time I'm due to make another character in open slots Normally they have another event within the time I play. so in the end you get something unique for each character if you have been playing from the beginning you got a little something for each character to show off... Like the witches hat.. face it on rangers they look like a pilgrim. lol so no I dumped it almost instantly. My necro was newer then my monk so I got he updated Pumpkin for him. Leaving my old pumpkin on my monk and angry pumpkin on my necro... A gave the witches hat to my female Mesmer. My Ranger kept his Tengu Mask. Looks best there anyway... I got a dragon mask for my Necro, and Assassin.
So lets look at this.
Pumpkin Mask
Santa Hat
Antlers Hat
Tengu Mask
Dragon Mask
Angry Pumpkin Mask
Witches Hat
That's 7 hats I know of... so if you had 1 each for every character you got Just with games... that's 9 times 7... which is impossible but lets pretend...
lets see.. that's what? 63 hats... Now where the hell you gonna put them all anyway? and that does not include all the holiday weapons from Christmas, and all the special items from events and quests and collectors...
So its not practical to have Every character get Every Holiday item. Make some choices and leave it at that...
