It raises the value of the item identified. At the later parts of the game consequently identifying every item earns you quite some money.

Lets say I had two purple swords, with exactly the same skin and mods once id'd.
sword (A) - I id ONCE to see the mods, and sell it to the merchant.
sword (B) - I id ONCE to see the mods, and AGAIN to see a price under it.
Your saying the price for sword B would be more then sword A?

Not sure if it's like that on blues/purples/gold.
But on whites, if you ID them when the merchant sell window is open you can sometimes get up to 30gp more for the white items.
You go to sell to the merchant - not ID'd. He offers you 50g.
You ID - he now offers you 75g.
With a superior ID kit - 100 uses - you can make quite a bit more gold.

You'd have a lot of people upset, since it's kinda one of the major ways folks make money.

It isn't the "already identified" items, ie blue, purple or gold, but the white items. Leave it as it is, if you don't wish to take the time and use of an ID kit to do this then don't, but if you find it worthwhile then ID everything before you sell it.
With a little testing you can tell which areas this is profitable in and which you should leave them unidentified and just sell them.

A Superior ID kit is just the same as 4 standard kits, only it costs 500g more.

ISing for money is a good thing, but dont forget to factor in the 4g/use on a standard ID kit. If youre not getting at least 5g extra from IDing, its not worth it. On a side note, you also need to be careful about salvaging. I went to salvage some shells I had(5g each merched), so I could sell the chitin, ehich was at 70g/10(7g/each)). Had 50, so Id get 350g from chitin, but kits would be 200g, so Id make 150g, which is what Id get from just merching. So salvaging sometimes isnt worth the time/trouble. Look at how much youre really getting from IDing and salvaging.

Yeah, but you don't want loads of regular identification kits clogging up your inventory. You need space for the items too.

Better stated, 4 standard kits cost 400g total, 1 superior kit costs 500g. So it's only 100g more.
Back on topic, the only weapons that really are affected in this way are the whites, which do in fact change value when ID'd. It's more noticeable in the later areas.

how about this. Lets just lock all prices to Base value and problem solved!!! lol OMG everyone up in arms about prices being locked, This would totally ruin the game, OMG what are they crazy? I want to sell my Gold item with crappy mods for 200K No way... Bla bla bla...
Sorry I don't have a lot of pity for anything in regards to values and IDs. If your like me you know to ID everything and give it to NPC merchants. Bang some legitimate gold... on a good run, I average about 4k from salvage and drops being sold.
I came up with a legitimate formula in Guru ONCE for using base values as a calculation start for TRUE market values of weapons, and it was Blatantly rejected because of pressure from the inflation marketeers.
True Value = (Base + ( (10% for less the perfect natural mod) or (20% for perfect natural mods) * Base) + (2k for perfect suffix + 2k for perfect Prefix )) X (2 for purple, or 3 for GOLD or GREEN)
Vampiric Longbow of Marksmanship (gold)
15% ^ 50 health
5:1 Vampiric
+1 Attrib of marksmanship (20% chance)
Value 320
so (320 + (20%*320) + (+2k +2k)) * 3 = 13,152 gold
So anything around 13k is a good deal.
I still use this for my friends and such on our internal purchases in the alliance, but the Inflators HATE any value system. However this is what I use for making a bid on something. You will notice that more and more inflator vendors will NOT allow the item to be IDed for reveling the value for this reason. IF the base value is reveled a true Value can be calculated using any system from that. And they want their inflation price, not a realistic calculated price.
IDK, I try my best to just avoid it. But on occasion I find myself drawn into something cause I just got lazy or something... But not often...
