For me, it boils down to what I'd want to be seen playing. Say a relative walks in, and you're playing on your ele. Your female ele. With the Double Ds and the skimply little outfit. You've got an awkward convsersation ahead of you.

haha, the true danger of playing an ele
but to the OP, if it bothers you when they hit on you, "hit" back... that might shut them up.
or just do what i do, run around them in quick circles before zoning away and whispering them "there's no way you can find me."
that would probably confuse them enough to make them fall inside out.

get real dude... its only a character, a roleplaying character... that is if you know what is roleplaying
its not supposed to be real, this is a game

Finally, someone says something smart for a change. Some real stupid posts in this thread. I have to agree with Madical. Look, I have male and female characters, who cares? I make them how I think they look the best, and fitting to my taste. I couldn't make a male monk look good (no offense to those that do), but I like the style of hair and facial features more on the female. Same goes for elementalists, but I like the way the males look more. That's just my opinion.
Both my sisters has male and female characters too. I don't really see what the big deal is here. If you get hit on as a female character then just leave the district, block the person..ect. Icons above our heads? This isn't The Sims, this is Guild Wars.
If you don't like the extra attention don't play the gender....

No.
You play a girl character you deal with it. If people have a little pink symbol over their name, it means they may be in for some abuse by the not so nice people that stalk the internet. You find it to be a problem being a girl charater? Wonder how you remove the problem from yourself and place it on the actual girl players of GW.

I think it will be worse if you actually have a little icon on top of your toon to signify if the player is male/female as little kids will now know who to specificially target to make rude gender remarks or who to "hit" on.... so
/not signed.
As to solve these problems, when playing a female toon and getting the strange pms, often i would pm those little kids back that i am a 65yr old dude with half my teeth left and a hairy back and you dont wanna know where else. Very often you find that i end up on their ignore list faster than i can type the next pm. Problem solved.

If they bother you, just tell them you are back-haired truck driver called 'Bob'.
If they ask why a man creates female character tell them:
"If I'm going to se someones bottom during more than 60 hours, I'd like it to ba a woman's."

So far since I have started playing I have seen only three girl characters being played by girls. My girlfriend who got me into the game, and two guild members that have up and disapeared. I have a feeling if people could see the actual gender of the player, alot of hard up delusional guys would get a pretty profound reality check.

If you made a female character, expect to be treated as a female character by the dumber of the GW Society.
Is being thought of as a girl by some random person over the Internet really going to hurt you that much?

Already been through that. My girlfriend actually said she likes my female rit.
It is annoying when another character in game starts hitting on you because of the way your character looks. I usually just run away from them.

To the OP - If you're going to dress up as a woman, expect to be treated as one. This is the sort of crap that they have to put up with day in and day out on the net just for being a woman. Perhaps the experience will teach you a little empathy.

im not talking about simple things like that if you are getting that picture.
I do not want to beable to go places and sit for awhile to talk to frineds without a guys grinding on me (some girls like that so dont bring that subject up please) now If i start dancing thats another story I should expect guys to come around thats my own fault. heh. But when i dont show any signs of any sex to anyone thats when an issue comes along and now you cant just tell them to stop because most of the people who say stuff and do stuff r idiots and little kids who just keep repeating. I also dont think this would cause gay coments if you dont show a side of gayness?!?!?!?!.

Here's an idea:When the wammo starts grinding on you.....move. Really, does it effect you so much that you can't play the game any more? Just ignore them. It's not like every girl character is getting harrassed 24/7.

Everyone knows female characters is for females. Are you hiding something, or have a secret desire?

Yan, I wouldn't be talking about hiding something and secret desires.

As for the suggestion... /notsigned
No need for something that is redundant. You know the majority of the female characters are males so why enforce that fact with a useless icon?

I'm a girl, and play guys occasionally. Does that say something about me too? Also, my girl characters never get harrassed, even if I dance. :/ Are they not attractive enough?
I'm not surprised that some guys would choose to play girls, after all, it's far more pleasant to watch the wonderful job Anet has done on the girl models than whatever they threw together for the males. Most of the male models on GW are ugly. Either they are way too dainty pretty-boys, or huge towering bags of muscle. In my opinion only the ranger, ritualist and assassin classes have nice models for males. Even armor-wise, it seems girls have gotten the better deal with more stylish armors.
And why's everyone so afraid of being called gay? It's not a horrible disease, you know.... besides, anything a person says ingame shouldn't matter since it's only a game. Chances are, you'll never run into that person in real life, and in the game you can always ignore them, or even have a little fun scaring the idiots off by outwitting them (which is not a hard thing to do, considering the average humping warrior's IQ).

The way I look at it is this. I'm playing this character for 100 plus hours of my life. I have to look at it for that long, not other people. So if I find the female character easier on the eyes or if I just plain find the males hideous, yes I'm going to have a female Ele or Paragon or Monk or Rit. I have to look at that character for 100 plus hours, not someone else. And it makes me more likely to pull that chracter up and play it as well.
