I would have signed for a smoking emote. I go AFK for a smoke and I'd love to have something to represent that.

But, since everyone else downs it and says it encourages bad behavour(sp?)....let all things be equal.

Get rid of drinking, especially absinthe as that does contain illegal substances.

Get rid of violence too our kids are impressionable after all.

Dress all of the women in black robes so that we can only see their eyes while you're at it.

Point being, yes, smoking is bad for you, but so is getting fire thrown at you, or getting swung at with a sword. The game already encourages eating of sweets. Death rates in the US put Tobacco and Poor Diet/exercise almost neck a neck at around 400,000(year 2000, in a 2005 AMA report)

But alcohol is NOT bad for health if you drink moderately. Ok, ingame we actually can get totally drunk, but it's a good thing to get drunk sometimes even irl.

Nope... it's not the same.

There are boxing and karate, and many fighting sports. That's not violence. It's 'adrenaline'. Sports are good. Have you noticed that there is not blood in the game, just sparks and such?

Human body is precious, both male and female. It should be shown, not hidden.

And moderate drinking is good for you, in moderate. Part of the Mediterranean diet, is one vase of wine or a beer a day. And its GOOD, and it's proved it's good. For the heart, and overall health.
Absinthe is only illegal in some countries and few states of USA, not all of them... and that's a bit silly... but many american laws and prohibitions are silly, like having to wear glasses but not requiring helmet while riding a bike... (yup, "the glasses would save our life..." geez...)
There are huge lists with absurd laws and legal flaws... forbidding absinthe is one of them, it's proven that absinthe is not really toxic at all, its proven that toyones in absinthe do not cause allocinations.

Some sales of absinthe in the US are legal, some of those have no thujone, some have trace amounts. Absinthe with high levels of thujone are still illegal in the US.
Read that wiki and tell me where it states thujone is not toxic at all, I seem to have missed it, or list another credible source.
I did see this part:
"Wormwood extract can cause renal failure and death due to excessive amounts of thujone, which in large quantities acts as a convulsive neurotoxin."

If you're telling me moderate drinking is good for even the youngest players of GW......well, I don't believe the laws(the non-stupid ones) even permit such a study. GW encourages heavy drinking anyways, the lowest title is "drunkard", FFS.

One could argue that alcohol, even in moderation is bad for you. It does make your liver and other assorted organs work harder.

One cigarette a day is no worse than one alcoholic drink per day.
Try drinking 20-40 alcoholic drinks a day, every day, and see if you die sooner than you would smoking 20-40 cigarettes a day.

Anything can kill you if you don't use moderation, you can die from drinking too much water(as happened fairly recently at some competition).

Smoking doesn't guarantee catastrophic lung failure, it increases your risks of many diseases, same as drinking, or even eating.(And a note on all statictial studies...absolutely no one dies of old age any more. If I die at 104 years old, it's going to be due to excessive tobacco and alcohol use, you watch....)
Smoking is a danger, so are cheeseburgers, martini's, crossing the street, and swinging swords at other people.

Besides all the arguments above(which aren't really related), this whole argument of video games influencing people's behavior is retarted, same bad rap that D&D got years ago, and even the backwards record playing causing murders.....They were all put to bed long ago. We have ESRB. Make the game then label it appropriately, not the other way around. Parents, control your kids, don't let the TV and video games do it for you.

F'n Silly.

The wizard guy in lord of the rings(I'm not a LotR nerd, sue me) had a freaking pipe, I want one too.

Smoking is annoying and it doesn't have any place in the game. I would like to suggest alcohol be removed as well, but that's another thread.

Why would any company that produces games for kids even think about adding cigarettes to the game? Just think of the parents who would refuse to buy guildwars for there kids because of this.

Hmm you might be on to something here. Add cigarettes to the game = less kids playing it and a more mature community as a result. I'm down with that. Just makes me picture the whole guildwars community coughing lol. Need to add a cough emote and we're set!

Ok guys thanks for all your feedback. I'm really only looking for opinions now about how it should be implemented. It's a given that many people don't want smoking in the game so thanks for your feedback and please no trolling. If all your going to say is a one liner or rehash whats been said please restrain. If you have a good opinion on how to add it please do share.

Now currently people are going more along the lines of pipes, while I would prefer tobacco rolls if more people respond with liking than that will have to be my recommendation. If some people want the tobacco rolls than maybe both could be added?

Also, according to the ESRB there are 83 rated games with both alcohol and tobacco use and an additional 15 with only tobacco use...so adding this to guildwars is not breaking some magic taboo, its been done many times is acceptable and most titles with it are rated 6+ to 13+ age requirement.

Honestly, I didn't expect such a huge shock about pixels of tobacco given the alcohol and violence, but you learn something new.

I'm especially in need of more title ideas, and emotes please.

I like the idea of pipes, it makes it rather simple. You buy a pipe from a merchant, and [Tobacco substance thing] as well. You double-click on the Tobacco and then click on the pipe to smoke. That way, its slightly more complicated than alcohol etc, but better than having a pipe be an equipped item. ('I'm wielding a pipe.' heh.)

But if you really want tobacco rolls, it could be done so that you can 'craft' them. You would take 1 roll of parchment, and [Tobacco substance thing] and go to a special crafter and have tobacco rolls made. Then they would work the same way as sweets.

Honestly though, I'd almost rather have a marijuana-ish thing for smoking..the visual effects would be cool.

I'd be happy with a /pipe emote.

Standing up, one hand holding pipe in mouth, other hand holding the elbow of the pipe holding arm.

Occasional puffs of smoke coming up from the pipe.

Pretty simple.
I don't think there should be a title or items that need to be aquired.

I can see the anti-rolled tobacco argument, pipes are more fitting to the genre, LOTR as a reference.

This is a bad suggestion, one it promotes something our children do not need to start, smoking. If you smoke great thats your life dont screw up someone elses. as far as drinking title, we can lose that easily, I dont think it should be in game either. Alcohol is just as bad if not worse than smoking. Besides if they add smoking some ass hat will want Crack or Meth or some other useless drug added to the game. Do you thing in real life leave the game a game.
