GW2 Advanced Planning: Character Creation
Hey, all with the news about GW2 just being announced I figured now would probably be the best time to get ideas in for it while they are still working on it.
I'm going to start on character creation because in guild wars character developement has always been one of the most important features in my opinion.
Now the character creation system in GW2 shouldn't be completely different from guild wars. It should still have most of the options we have now such as face, hair and color but those areas should be expanded farther to increase customization.
So for hair you would be able to choose it in 3 parts. The first would be top where you would choose what your hair would look like on the top, second would be back where you would choose how your hair would look on the back of your head, third would be sides and last would be bangs. This way people have have very different hair but without removing the chance of hair being able to move in the wind and such. Once you go through shape you would choose color much like you do now I would just recommend having color seperate from darkness and expanding color choices but complete freedom may wind up with many pink haired people running around.
Now for other races these options could easily be replaced with say horns and ears, ect.
Alright, so the next part of creation (after choosing class and hair of course) is face. Face could easily be much like it is now where you choose from about 10 faces but this time leave added details off. Added details would be in a new catagory for face and these would include scars, facial hair, eye color, nose type, eye brows and lips (color too). These are lots of small details that can be added together to create a very different look for every character but can still look the style of guildwars. Of course skin color is also an option but I didn't think I needed to mention that as well.
Last would be a new category which would be body type. So no matter what a warrior should look like a warrior but not all warriors should look the same. If you can't add sliders for the body then let us choose from 3-4 types such as fat, lean, muscular and average. Also we should be able to choose from 2-3 class exclusive normal stand and run animations. That way there is the ability to stand in a group of warriors or any class without looking exactly the same like clones. Height slider would be there as well.
The last was kind of a crazy idea I had but it would be voice. 2-3 voices for males of each race to pick and 2-3 for females. Probably the best would be young, adult, elder.
How many of these ideas will make it in? Probably not many but if you support them tell me and if you can add to them please do! I'm sure there are some I forgot. Also if you disagree with any of these ideas or if any don't make sense or could create problems let me know.

There are some significant lag issues that can occur if your not careful with customization options, but I agree it would be better to have customization broken down into smaller features instead of have a vast selection for four character features.
I think if they had dual hair characteristics, triple face characteristics, skin and hair color, and a little body selection, on top of the race selection we are hearing about, we would have some good diversity. I know I played a MMO once where there were only 5 races, only 3 of the races had dual gender, and for each of those there were only about 10 characters to choose from with 2 hair options for each........ weak.
I think having hair split in 3 parts is a bit much, patch marking each peice hair will be kind of silly, one part for general hair style and another for accessories and hair designs would probably be enough. Face be customizable at the eyes, nose and mouth nose would include the general face shape and mouth would include facial hair. And body types should not be too exagerated, especially in the weak department. It is silly to see really obese or sickly people in combat.
The voice idea is really nice. If you had at least a few voices split up by gender and race along with auidible in game commands it would make the gameplay and combat much more vivid. This reminds me of alot of FPS where you can signal verbal commands to direct teammates and notify them of situations. Simple stuff like Retreat, Stand Your Ground, Advance, Focus Attack and Help could be fun to utilize.

The voice option is nice, but that would take up more room on your hard drive. Imagine, if there were 25 cinematics a male and female voice actor would have 50 sound files. Add three to choose from and that becomes 150 for such a minor feature.
Also to note, as mentioned earlier, too much customization means that when you load the server has to send you an A LOT more information. Instead of "male necro human hairstyle 3" being sent it'll be "male necro human bangs 2; top 4; sideburn 8; back 1" mixed with data for hair color, height, and all the rest mixed with the various races and the fact that we'll have more than 100 in a particular instance.
Note: I'm all for customization, but leave the minor details to games such as Oblivion. I do like the idea about accessories/facial hair though.

Well the voice choices could atleast be for combat if nothing else. As for all the options.. well yes it would increase the server load but if they keep their simple style it shouldn't take too many polys to make each of the models thus most computers would be able to handle it.
Also not all of these ideas I expect to make it into the game but its nice to get them out there none-the-less.

Actually its games like Oblivion where you don't need that much customization. In an MMO there are lots of people running around and you want to look different. In a single player RPG as long as you look decent it doesn't matter how many options you have you won't look like everyone else.

Im mostly uncertain of 3 part hair styles becaues it seems like you could make alot of choppy and unattractive hair styles. Typically the hair on your head all comes together into a hairstyle, not mixed matched parts, and outside of additional pony tails, pins, and bandanas in your hair, several hair custom options may just look silly.
I think it's the face that sets you appart the most, people share hairstyles, not faces (twins maybe). If you can choose several eye types+color, several face+nose structures, and several mouth+facial hair options than you could mix them enough to make a fairly original face. Skin color and hair is good already, than add a bit of structure customizing and your through.
I think the addition of several races will already hike up the customization and even core differences significantly, so exagerating customization may cost too much spread across several races. I think the goal here is to have attractive characters, and to have just enough customization to add originality, not a fashion show.
But if we can freely customize our look, and they don't try to seperate features by class types as well as race, than having more customization will balance out. If you consider what we have now, there are 10 body types, some a little simular, and hundreds of different faces and hairstyles split between those professions, and than colors and heights. If you allow a free build reguardless of class use, and instead offer a little more customization, and include the advance in technology, one would imagine it could be done.

Also the profession of your character should have no bearing on your characters looks, like in the current GW. (i.e. A male warrior cant look like a male ele)

Right but a pony tail with bangs looks different from one without. Of course some combos could look bad but you'll get that no matter what even with the current system. The people that strive to look like idiots will accomplish that no matter what.

Well yes and they still could share hairstyles just not as often. I do think that the face is the most important.

Well a lot of that should be up to the player. Some people want to look unattractive others want to look like they belong in a fashion show thats what is great about character customization.

But if we can freely customize our look

Well, I actually do think that you should be able to tell the difference between classes with one glance but there should be more options for appearance like I already stated in my first post. (fat, lean, muscular. example: fat necro would be different then fat warrior)
Maybe thats just because I'm used to it though.

Please don't quote writing on the same page of the same thread. It insults my writing and insults your ability to write. Proper quoting is used to bring in context to information not present to the topic or far removed, it is not ment for spot addressing comments on the same page.

It would be nice if I didn't have to but sadly most don't read the whole topic and won't know what I'm talking about without the provided quote. I've pin pointed exactly what I was responding to in the quotes so it doesn't take too much room while at the same time still provides the example of what I'm responding to.
Maybe its not the proper way but it is how I will continue to post as I know it works well.

those who don't read the topic arn't going to understand anyway, we are making suggestions and communicating ideas for the developers and other accomplished writers. Catering to people who are to lazy too read and too dumb to understand adds no value to the discussion.
It works as well as basing our perspective on second hand information, it can only be less accurate, that may "work" for you, but it isn't well, or better, or good, it is worse. If you don't agree, we will see how well it works when I don't read or respond to your posts.
