Offline play
It would be nice to be able to play GW offline.
GW is a great game, and I am addicted to it. So addicted, that I want play all the time. The main problem is that frequently, when I want to play, I am nowhere near an internet connection. Sometimes I have an internet connection, but it is so slow, I spend half my play time getting lag-killed.
I know ANet wants it to be a community game where we play and quest in groups, and that is a large reason the game is so enjoyable. But there are a lot of times where I only have 30 minutes or 45 minutes to play (even if I have an internet connection). Aside from wasting 10-15 minutes trying to get a group together, I don't want to join a group and leave them hanging half way through a quest or mission. So typically, in these instances, I only use henchies or heroes anyway, which is what would be done offline.
I know ANet wants to keep track of potential botting and farming and other things, so maybe they could allow only a certain amount of offline play before a reconnect to the ANet servers is required (reconnect once a week, or every 5 hours of offline play, or whatever). At reconnect, the updated files on my computer would sync with the files on the server and any dev updates would download, etc., etc.

No way. I used to play Phantasy Star Online and being able to play offline with your online characture mean't tons of hacking. Offline means you cannot monitor activiy at all and people will find ways to crack into the game and do what they want.
When they close down the servers, which they will eventually, I think the last thing they should implement is an offline mode (since that will be your only option).

If your off line everything you do would have to be temp stored on your hard drive = a few new titles in a day by editing files

When Guild Wars servers finally go down in the future, then it would be nice to have some kind of offline play thingy going.
Other than that, no.

Yea, I see your reasoning, but like everyone else said... there would be too much hacking. Also the game is called Guild Wars becausse your also suppose to be in a guild and GvG, which playing offline wouldnt let you do that.

Aside from possible exploitation, do you know how fun it would be to play with henchies and heroes?
Exactly, it's not.

Erm...I certainly feel weird when I visit a deserted outpost. Doing it over and again would spell disaster!

The only real way this could work without the risk of exploitation, would be the characters are only for offline, network play. They could not, should not be playable on ANet.

I wouldn't mind an offline feature for testing builds, but I agree with Perkunas, the characters you use would have to be for offline only.

i think probably more towards teh end of GW1's life they will release the ability for sum1 to host a server and have a bunch of people connect for "Lan" play or such, using a similar style to how D2 did with a diff set of chars for "OFFLINE" only with no connection to ONLINE players... or rather once u use an online player for offline play it cant be re-used for online play coz of potential farming exploitation etc.etc

Only way would be with a Diablo-style battlenet singleplayer distinction.

Either your idea will never work, or it's too ahead of time from the current stage of online games.

LOL
OK OK
I retract my idea.
ANet, you may officially ridicule and laugh at this suggestion.
/notsigned (until GW goes offline...which by then, we'll all be playing GW 3).

Every idea is valid in a way that promotes discussion and better understanding.
I thank you for your thread and the collective brainstorming that it allowed.
Cheers!
