If you're that "risk-averse" don't use lockpicks to open chests.
I, myself had burned several lockpicks before I finally took my own advice ; )
5 picks, all grapes. Sigh.

Lockpicks are supposed to be universal keys. Of course there's a downside. If you're using them instead of keys, perhaps you're thinking about this wrong. They aren't supposed to be 'guaranteed green elite' farming tools. If you don't like the money you're losing farming with lockpicks, why are you farming again?
If you want the items, you have to be willing to spend a little more than just time to get them, in my opinion.

Theres a reason why a lockpick costs so much
1. You can use it on ANY chest. NM or HM
2. You have a chance to retain it, thats basically a free 1.5k.
3. If you retain it, +250 luck.
4. If you don't retain it, +50 unlucky.
5. If used on a high end chest, +1 treasure seeker.
And the only thing you don't like is purples occasionally pop out? Ha.

It's (by design) to be a gold sink + lottery = you may get lucky.

Lockpicks are a goldsink.
Stop buying them. Then we won't have to read your rants here.
Risk > Reward.

I got 70% purples all weekend as well. With my title tracks right now, I have a 52% chance of retaining the pick.
What is even worse is when I am LB/SS points farming and have only a 22% chance of retaining. These higher end locked chests should all drop golds. But of course, at least 20% are purples, and the golds are still all crap.

/signed I never buyed a Lockpick. And everytime I open a locked chest with a found in-game lockpick I know I will waste at least 500g. I never got anything worth more than a 600g key. Yes, I always get more cash by selling a key to merchant.

HOLY CRAP! How is there not risk? a gold drop does not mean I win... It does not mean all risks averted! Why do posters keep saying this instead of articulating what they really mean? If I take this statement at face value it makes absolutely ZERO sense!
Should I conclude that getting a grape is considered a failure? Are you saying gold = win and grape = lose and so removing grapes removes the risk?
And as for this "Golds should be rare" attitude... Oh brother! Good golds worth keeping already are rare! 95% of the gold drops I've gotten are sold back to the merchant because they're nearly as worthless as purples. So enough with the LaLaLa... Well golds aren't selling for what they once were on the player market, you say. Well think it over... maybe the need of equipping heroes with decent weapons forced more players to brave areas they previously thought too hard. Now they not only get their own golds, but they have extra they're trying to sell to others. Supply up and demand down. I've never bought a thing from another player except some green weapons in my earlier days. There's simply no need. The game doesn't inherently create a demand so anything else is contrived demand. Folks are fickle. One day the thing everyone wants won't sell for beans cuz folks will realize more and more that they can go get their own.
I don't want purple drops removed from the game. I think they make perfect sense in many of the areas... But in Hard Mode and GW:EN? What about a purple is high level?

Purple drops from 1.5k chests suck. Really. Locked Chests MUST have 90% gold drop chance. True.

Might as well make all tomes elite while your at it [/sarcasm] /notsigned. Stop complaining, it's just one of the risks you have to take. If you don't like it, just stop using lockpicks.

Tell me about it. And oh.. the death thing in Guild Wars really sucks. I say we should do away with death penalty. Actually, no, scratch that, give us 20% moral boost when we enter a new area just to be sure we won't die. That way, we can reduce the risk of dying and the game would be much better.
[/sarcasm]
Are you kidding me? Do you have any sense of economy to realize what that would do to the game if all rare items became common? It'd make it crap. They're supposed to be rare in *every* manner, not just when you're not farming for rares... I bet you'd push for having a skill bar full of elites too, eh?

No purples = Much much more golds = the value of the golds get crapified even further.
The economy always works this way that the values will even out over time so the average income from opened chests will be about the same before and after this update.
While the amounts of purples dropping from locked chests during GW:EN preview seemed to be higher than from typical 600g chests (same lockpick break chance), and I've seen streaks of over 15 purples in a row drop from them, it still may be pure luck.
Maybe, if the % chances for purps in GW:EN are higher than in other campagins, they should be adjusted to the standard levels, but no further changes should be made.

First, if you find a player form Factions who is in a quild that owns a city you can almost always buy picks from players for 1250g each. They make 50g on each pick so most reasonable players will make the purchase for you from the merchant they can get to. Yes, they get lots of stuff at a reduced price.
Second, I liked the old chests better where if you found a gold chest everyone got a gold. You still had to open the chest once but you could trade off and find the gold ones. At least that way you could save a few keys. But if you want the opens you still have to open them.
Third, Seems to me that there are way to many things now that eat money and less and less ways to make it. Try standing on those chance rings and not loose your shirt and every bit of extra cash you have.
Fourth, I love GW:EN and dwarven chests but wait until they put purples in there. When people stop playing any where else and only do GW:EN because the drops are better purples will start falling. Or when you did that dungeon 3 or 4 times here comes the purple.
Lastly, I don't want to eliminate purple just up the gold odds a bit. Make it easier to get my own and make those inexpensive unids look not so good.

I would kill a puppy to get golds out of locked chests (I opened maybe about 50 last weekend) But if anet bumped the chances of getting rares out of chests there would be more rares on the market. Making them even more worthless than they already are.

At first when I read this thread, I almost agreed to it immediately. However, now that I think about it, I don't.
I agree the prices of lockpicks are steep.
I agree the drops you usually get are purple.
I agree that the RoR (Rate of Return) is low.
As much as I would like to get a "comparable" return on my drop, I think that would actually imbalance the economy. Golds, as we speak have dropped tremendously due to overfarm, etc. You can barely make money of a good gold. Offering more "comparable" return only brings the chance of getting a rare drop from a chest even lower because more people will open chests.
Consider this:
Chests are not designed for you to get your drop so that you can come out "even". Chests are designed to offer a "chance" of a rare drop. Imagine playing the lottery. 99.99....% of the time, you buy a lottery ticket you will get ZERO return. So why do you keep buying them? because there is a "chance" of winning the lottery. (and if you don't, then you can relate to gambling or any other activity that's similar...you get my point)...Anyway, you should get the analogy.
If you're concerned about your titles, then here's the solution: Don't play on HM, play on NM, buy keys at 600-750g and open all the chests you want. You've just instantly reduced your cost by approx. 40%-50%.
If you're concerned about your ROI (Return on Investment) of your lockpicks, then consider your financial situation before doing so. If you can't afford it, don't do it. Keep farming, and maybe you'll get your drops through farming or even more lockpicks. And no, I'm not a broker or an investment banker....
