Yeah, it seems to be an Anet oversight.
It would (in reality) make no sense, but the way the dye system works is nothing like reality...

So now they have to make colors that come from multiple dyes of the same color? Come on.

Well, they already have it programmed into at least one portion of the game. If you try to mix two dyes of the same colour, the dye window does show the combination (and I think it usually looks quite good. Like two or three green dyes on some of the ranger armours).
I'd like it anyway. It can't be that hard if it works in the dye preview window. Maybe I'm overlooking something here. Please correct me if I am.

I've seen what dyes look like stacked in preview and I like the look. No reason for us to not be able to do it.

The colors are already there, try dragging 2 dyes of the same color into the preview window and you'll see different results, some of them are pretty good.
The thing is, the interface doesn't let us apply such combinations, i don't see any reason for that...

There were quite a few early dye mixes that used the now gone dye remover.
these also gave some nice effects that used to show up as new colours so having similar happen for multiple instances of the same dye should be fine.
Does the dye still reverse or otherwise act strangly on tattoo armor and those glowing weapons from the underworld ?

Given how dye preview works, I don't see why this isn't allowed.

That is actually due to the color system being wrong.
If you add one dye, it dyes the armor 'corretly'.
If you add two or more, they are mixed with the armor's base color.
THAT is what should be fixed.
When I add silver and yellow to an elementalist armor I DON'T want the base purple added with them!

It's different? Maybe I missed an update, but when I chuck in 2+ dyes of the same type, it looks exactly the same in the preview window as one. The only difference I see is the little red note telling me I can't add identical dyes.
