Although I agree with you, prudes are still potential or already paying customers, and you can't change their way of life.
What I don't get is why certain things are censored by the game itself. Damned Cleric for example. *holds ctrl and clicks* I'm targeting ------ Cleric! Or if you have your language set to Bork, like I do, Cantha = C U N T ha, or, with filter, ----ha.

I've sworn like a sailor at times, and never once got banned. It's all a matter of being unlucky and having some report happy kid see you.

What about if a person shoots a laz0r blast out of their mouth whenever they talk? That would hurt...

Swearing shows lack of imagination and that you couldn't think of anything better to say.

I would have a new best friend. Except he'd have to be quiet most of the time, until someone I dislike came by.
Oh right. On-topicness. Meh. I swear all the time, happens a lot when around shitty players. I mostly rage on vent, but occasionally, team gets to feel the fury.

Swearing expresses anger [among other emotions], how else do I say "Damnit! I JUST FAILED AGAIN!" ?

Having the chat filter available should not excuse anyone from expressing themselves in some semblace of a dignified manner. I'm with the don't swear/don't worry crowd on this one. And I've reported people for some of the garbage that they spew out. But for the occasional 4-letter word, I'm not bothered by it.
There are many, many people old enough to know what words go in those blanks left by the chat filter. A better fix to the chat filter is to block out entire posts of people's who's language sets off the filter. So instead of seeing: "Player A: YOU ----! You ------ me! Kiss my --- you ------- n00b!"
(It's not hard to figure out what goes in those blanks, is it?) People with the chat filter on will not see any of it, and there will be much rejoicing!

Swearing for swearing sakes is silly, I understand that "reality TV" makes it seem that all people swear. I do, quite often at work. I was a sailor before. So swearing is part of who I am. However, I can go several hours without swearing at all, I have control. And getting on a game to swear? That is why I would never have something like XBox live. So, if you like to swear, do it, who cares, but if you get popped, don't cry.

So wait, what's the problem here? If they already know what words go there, what do they need the chat filter for? Protect them from mean people?

I'm going to go into the center of 31 hungry raptors in hardmode, alone and set to offline, and say '---- ANET!' in local chat.
Only the automated voice will hear me.

The game comes with the filter enabled. By disableing the filter you should wave ALL rights to take offence over anything typed. Plain and Simple.

While swear words are a representation of undignified control, I agree to this measure. There's a chat filter and it's there for a reason. If you report someone for inappropriate language, then use it. However, it should be defined as to what you said. If you were bashing like a particular race, detailed sexual commentary, or perhaps religion bashing (which is A-Okay in my book) then that might be your reason, not because you said "You stupid ass, you killed me, lol."

Get with it.
|
Point taken; It's on by default I'm pretty sure.
One would have to willfully disable it. (As there are even 3 levels of the filter aswell.)
'f*ck you!'
'F*CK YOU, TOO!!'
'OMG /REPORT!'

Should being the key word. Should, but don't. Swearing is still against the EULA, whether you have the filter on or not. People can piss and moan all they like, the fact is it is something Arenanet will take action on. Complaining won't make them stop.

well, the odd swear word is ok with me, and understandable.
But I will report for 3 reasons:
1) Any kinda of racisme/sexisme or anything along those lines.
2)Every other word of you last 12 sentence you just wrote is a swear word
-like I said, I understand the swear here and there, but too much is too much.
3) your ticking me off personaly
Filter on or off, some stuff is still inapropriate, no matter if you offended or not. Yes, if you say F--- once, and get banned, its silly. But if you start saying it ever other word in town, then you ask for it your self
