Unlocking pets for heroes
Simple suggestion.
When you hand over a pet to a pet trainer, that pet gets unlocked for use by your heroes. You can select to use this pet, or well one with the same species, level and evolution, when you equip the charm animal skill rather than go out and charm individual pets for your heroes.
Or in other words, I can go out and charm a bear/rat/crocodile/flamingo, level it up, hand it over to the pet trainer to unlock bears for my heroes.
Then get a whole bear army by making them all rangers and giving them a bear pet.
I'd still have to charm another bear if I wanted one myself, but at least it'd just be two trips and two petleveling grinds. Not one for each hero.

wow.... that is a great idea. but make it sloted so you can only have like 3 pets unlocked so that you dont take up a ton of server space.

Charming pets isn't just keeping a roster of animals for you and your heros.

Would this mean that the pet the hero can get will start at level 20?

It would, as well as keeping the dire/elder/hearty evolution.
Although, myself I'm not to fussed about that. If it would mean that they get a pet at the same level as they are if they'd gone out and charmed one. That's fine too, I just want to be able to give all my heroes matching pets without having to go out, find and charm 11 bears/lizared/flamingoes/rats/crocodiles/whatever.

I like this idea. Having to raise pets for your heroes is what is keeping me from ever using beastmaster heroes... unless they get a Black Moa!

It's not like i gonna suicide when this idea becomes reality, but to me capturing a pet and leveling the pet is part of the fun...
However, and this has been discussed before, i want to be able to choose another pet when i want too (like i can with my real ranger).
Maybe can make it like the "festival hat maker"... show a captured pet to that maker and he is able to "mate" it for you for your heroe(s)

^ whoa pets getting freaky >.<
but that gave me a good idea, how bout when you give a pet the the dude you can buy that pet back later. so you can have a few pets held on by him that you can buy and give and such. also you would be able to buy the pet for your heros. but when you buy it its gone so you cant have all of your heros have it, but you can train a pet solo *with dumb ai heros killing off the pet* and then give it to a hero.

It wasn't really meant as a replacement, if charming each pet and leveling it is what you prefer.
Just as an option for those of use that, well... Don't think that's part of the fun, but just a chore.

"I'd still have to charm another bear if I wanted one myself"
Please read everything before answering.
It won't be for you, only for the heroes of the character.
You'll have to charm the pet, level the pet, lend the pet to the pet trainer, and you'll never be able to use it again, you'll have to get a new one, but your heroes will be able to use one.
You don't have to get each skill for them, they coe with all unlocked skills available, so this would be mostly the same.
You grind once, they get always the result.
You make another character, you still have to get the skills, but they already have them.
I still think that being able to 'trade' pets with other players and heroes would do the trick.
You could use each hero to save a pet, even if you don't ever use the hero , the pet will stay with him, thus being safely kept.
If you want to level it, you take i with you or an hero.
If you want to take another, you move it to other hero that has no one.
If you want another you have 'saved' in another hero, you take both you and the hero with Charm animal, talk to the pet trader and you switch the pet with the hero.
Easy as a pie, isn't it?

I like the idea of a pet roster, for both the character as well as the heroes. See what if you had a pet, but wanted to try out another "late game" pet but wanted to keep your old one just in case the new one doesn't fit your fancy. Therefore you won't have to do twice the work for no change at all. So this is a great idea. Unlocking evolutions was a creative thought too. So I'm TOTALLY for this.

i like the idea but it needs fine tuning. You need to make it more work to be able to do this. Maybe add a quest or have you hero level it from 15 or something. But I still like this idea.

And what abut PvP characters and heroes? They can't choose pet evolution.

i like the idea and for my ranger i would of loved to have quick access to any previous pet i had charmed..wont happen in GW1
dont really care much about heros having them..
but pets are not that difficult to charm everytime i have wanted a change...
unless it is a spider and that really isnt that hard to get..

"Fun" is a relative term. Some people, most likely like yourself, feel that role-playing in video games is "fun". Other people, like myself would rather just play the game instead of grinding our pets.

OMFG! Now leveling a pet is grind? How pathetic.
Some people feel that role playing is fun, others want the game to play itself, with no effort.
