Sooo many suggestions and 99% are utter crap... think before you suggest lol
/notsigned
You cannot LEARN your armor to be a different colour (without using dyes, or some úber sexy magic) and you cannot LEARN to make materials appear out of thin air (without breaking some sort of balance lol)...
The Skill Tomes make sense because people READ them and learn a new thing

That's why I think actually dying armour with a book is simply TOTALLY RIDICULOUS, but there is a suggestion here that does make sense...in a book you could easily have previews of every combination of dye possible. So while you can't actuallyd dye anything using this 'tome of dye' you could use any dye combination to preview it on your armour, thus knowing exactly what your armour would look like with any colour combination you so choose, thus knowing exactly what colours you need to buy instead of wasting money on just trying a whole lot of stuff out.
THAT is something I wouldn't mind dropping.

Generally the idea of telling people to use search is so they dont ask questions that have already been answered or post repeat threads within a short space of time.
People are told to use search so they can find the answers they need and so do not need to post.
The Idea is NOT to bring back old threads and post your useless comments in them.

I actually did not want to post anymore in this thread, I just promote it shamelessly whenever someone comes up with ideas that are the same.
But, I just want to point out that this actually isn't a useless idea, plenty of people like it since another person posted one same idea and have plenty of people signing it and saying its a good idea. In 2007 you get bash for coming up with this idea, in 2008 you still get bash for this idea being ressurected, while someone else's coming up with same idea has totally different response. very interesting!
Just so you know how unpopular my wanting armor to be sparkley was, even before arena net comes up with chaos glove, well plenty of players crave to get chaos glove now. if sparkley armor isn't good, why so many players wants chaos glove?
Things that one can't understand does not means it's not good. The idea is free and its here for arena net to use if they see fit.
Yes, question: how do you dye an armor with a book? ey. how do you dye armor by double clicking on an icon that resembles, erm, a triangular bottle? answer that and you have your answers.

Pumpkin, that idea is not your idea at all. They have some very vague similarities, but your idea was nothing as polished or as good as that one, and didn't have the main ingredient which makes peole actually like that idea. The slider in that person's post isn't used to dye, it simply allows you to pick the colour you want and tells you what colour dyes you would need to buy in order to achieve that colour...
like I said, only vague similarities to what you have suggested in this thread... Your specific idea is still as bad in 2008 as it was in 2007 i'm afraid, but since then perhaps people have looked at your idea, improved on it and posted it in their own threads, so I guess kudo's for that at least.

how is a tome that you double click and get the color you want a bad idea?
Its a one off use thing, you don't get to keep it, it just has everything in there, click the tome, its opens, you select the part of the armor you want to dye, select the color you want, click apply. And the tome disappear from your bag and your item is dye at the selected part with the selected color.
its that simple.

Here is my suggestion regarding dyes. I'll even add the ideas from the OP to make sense due to the "how do you dye armor from a book" question.
1) Move Grey Dye to Dye Trader
2) Re-add Dye Removal under the Dye Trader
3) Add "Dye Glitter" to Dye Trader *Can also be made from Materials NPCs by crafting out of Vial of Ink and Glittering Dust|cannot be added alone*
4) Add "Dye Shiner" to Dye Trader *Add the metallic look to what you dye, cannot be added alone*
5) Lastly, and most importantly, change the default color of armor back to how it was before it was grey.
Edit:

Your looking at it from a "coding" perspective, at least of what I get. Other people are looking at it at a "how would this work in real life" perspective. When you ask how does double clicking a vial of dye dye an armor, double-clicking represents taking off the cap and pouring it on the armor. Can't "pour dye" on an armor from a book. Hope that helps clear things up.

How about a Tome of Dye or Book of Dye Recipes, instead of buying bottle of dyes and getting drops of dye that occupy 10 slots if you reserve one for each color.
When you click on Tome of Dye you'll get a slider, much like how you color the cape and it can color not just the color-able parts of the armor, it has options to color the un-color-able parts as well.
and we need
1) Tome of Dye (normal)
2) Tome of Dye (Metallic)
3) Tome of Dye (Sparkle) make armor sparkle!
and there you have it i just reduce storage usage by 7 slots

Metallic and sparkle just so like the chaos gloves look. I already suggested they add full chaos armor. The idea of a book dying armor doesn't make since either.
