Why is it that Ecto prices are so all important?

I have a serious issue with the way that SF farming has been nerfed. I could have understood if Anet said, "Well, it's too powerful," but instead the reason is the economy.

And why is that a bad thing? Because it was only done to protect the price of ectos. The price of Obs armour in money terms only changed by about 100k gold. Anet never said that the price of obsidian shards were unacceptable, even though it was 1.4k.

The fact that there is supply and demand also means that given time, the money that farmers made would also dwindle. When SF Chaos Plains farming came out, it was not impossible to make 54k in an hour. Just before the nerf, it had already dropped to ~36k (assuming one could farm 12 ectos over two runs in that hour, which is frankly a generous average). My point is that the farming would quickly reduce the prices of ectos to the point where other types of farming would be more appealing.

More importantly, Shard prices actually ROSE. What does this mean? It means that the demand for shards also rose. Ideally there should be no price disparity between shards and ectos, because they are both used in equal amount for Obs armour, and niether is particularly harder than the other to farm.

So the ONLY reason that Ectos were more valuable, is their use as currency. And the flooding of the market with ectos meant that once again, people could buy ectos for the purpose that they were originally intended for, i.e. to make obsidian armour. I don't think it's OK to protect a bunch of traders who've hoarded a certain type of item for the purpose of currency, especially when the use of that item for currency serves as an obstacle for the items original intended purpose.

So please stop messing with the economy. Guild Wars has been around for three years and you WILL start to see market saturation as new players dwindle and people start to wait for GW2. It's part of the natural lifespan of online games, and at best you will merely slow it down. Prestige items will indeed be common among older players, and it's unreasonable to expect that such items will remain "rare" indefinitely.

I actually do agree with you in principle, skills shouldn't be nerfed for economical reasons.

But it was way overpowered - aka deserving of nerf. And these QQ threads are annoying as all hell.

I felt dirty every time I went into the UW and did the chaos planes on my sin. Ya know why? It totally outdid almost every single farm out there. Not even close to SS/55 or any other UW farms. You can still farm with it if your smart so deal with it. Being able to get all the ectos for a set of FoW armor in10-14 runs (10-14k - weapon selling from loot) in short amounts of time is ridiculous and made people want to play sins for the wrong reason. Now its on par with VwK/ SS/55, and even just a little bit better still!.

Anet taking interest in economy is good and they should think hard about it in GW2. GG anet. You on the other hand fail.

im gonna go ahead and /sign. Honestly, who's the real QQer here? The post nerf SF sins...or the pre nerf SF haters? People got pissed their 10 stacks of ecto were losing value. They wanted to protect their investment, but that ultimately failed. Notice the ecto prices? Haven't barely changed since the nerf. And they'll probably keep dropping since more people are using the new SF farm. So stop bitching already. Farmers are crafty people, they'll always find a way around a nerf.

And honestly, why not let the farmers have their fun. It's a godamn game. No one in RL cares how many hordes of ectos you have or how l33t your armor is. No need to nerf a game that has no significant meaning in RL. It's meant to be fun. It's meant to satisfy the customer, and with all these nerfs, people are just getting pissed, mainly the majority. and every time A-net gives into the QQing elite...they lose a portion of their customer basis and the more customers they lose now, the less they'll have when GW2 comes out. I wouldn't be surprised that if they did keep nerfing SF and other uber effective builds, that GW2 will be filled with a bunch of KoABD's w/FoW armor bitching how they want more nerfs, just to make themselves seem more l33t. But sadly, in the end, no one cares about how much game $$$ you have, because in reality, it's just a bunch of pixels...

i sign only because i think ANet should be working on GW2 ond not the broken GW, I get the feeling theres like 2 guys assigned to handle GW and the rest are on another floor.
