Nice discription, so a nub is to build things up and to smash on it.
Conclusion: your build isn't complete without a nub, else it will fall apart, and when you are mad, you can blame the nub and smash on it.

Not really to build things up with, more to hold things together, keep the lose ends from showing.

What if you just randomized the mobs that spawn? There won't be a 100% chance of completing a farm run nicely, and will actually make the farmers THINK about how to kill that group instead of just memorizing where to stand...
