Yeah, I agree. I like to keep most of my Guild Announcements on our forums, but sometimes you really need to utilize the announcement window in-game to the best of your ability, and as bad as it sounds, I've been reduced to abbreviating, using aol speak(ne1, u, etc) to get a big point across, because I fear putting up:
All members see forums immediately
just won't get the message I need to get across to them. They might go...OK, I'll check that out when I get off. Time comes to get off Guild Wars and...they forget because it's late or some such.

Besides, depending on where you log in, the local spam will probably scroll the same message off the screen and those same 'lazy' guild members probably wouldn't be bothered enough to scroll back and read it anyway.

Man are you so negative or what? The point he making is most players don't want to have to minise the game, open their browser, load a web site AND then read something.
250 lines to give guild announcements is far too low... and really at the end of the day like you said its not like you have to read it now is it? But guild leaders should have the option to give more information.

LOL - right, I have to do that.
My guild announcement says something like:
REGISTER FOR FORUMS @ URLHERE !! Guild Hall south of Lion's Arch
Because we just got a Guild Hall, but we're on at different times, so I want to make sure everyone knows where it is.. and because every other annoucenment I want to make won't fit, so I have to make them visit the forums. I can't even fit our TS server info in there anymore.

As a lowly guild member that can not create, edit or even respond to an anouncment I have this to say.
Just what do you want to put into an announcement anyway?
An announcement is nothing more than a "headline" directing you to a more detailed story in another location; a location everyone has input to.
And that is all it should be.
As it is (even if it were 250,000 letters long) it is not a very effective means of communiction. It is still one-way. You dictate your thoughts to me but I can't respond with mine. That's not the way to run a guild.
Any guild with worthwhile members learns how to communicate effectively between members. Did you see the keyword BETWEEN in that last sentence?
Of course e-mail helps <- more on that later.
Why not use abbreviations.
Who among you can't translate this:
"GvG battle meet at Ft Rankin strategy discussion Saturday 8PM EST"
Aproximately 65 letters.
or this
"HoH"
If you have anything of substance to say then use E-mail or use your guild's private web site.
Besides the only time I see guild announcements is when I first log in.
The only problem with that is I login and when I hit the play button I go get a pop out fo the fridge and I'm AFK while my toon is loading and the game is happily spamming all the LFG chat; which in turn scrolls my guild's announcement off the screen.
You shouldn't be asking for a bigger announcement window, ask for in-game E-mail; believe me that will be a moe effective tool.
All guilds should have a private web page to carry detailed discussins of anything and everything pertaining to the guild's business.

Yes, and announcements for small guilds are never...small...
It might be nice for the bigger...richer/bottomless wallet guilds to say something like:
TS info @ http://www (someguildname) com
I removed the dots so it wouldn't try to make a link...
My point is, our forum link is this:
http://obsidiangodz.fragism.com/gl-bin/forum/index.php
for the main page...(btw please feel free to stop in, it's still under "extreme" work)
That takes up 54 characters alone. If I want a meaningful announcement, I need more room than I currently have. For example, one announcement I wanted to make was this:
Check out the new forums at: http://obsidiangodz.fragism.com/gl-bin/forum/index.php Don't forget to register and check the ventrilo info.
That will not fit into the announcement window, tried just now and it stops at "the"
And that's just an announcement, for one thing. I would hate to imagine guilds that don't have a forum they tell their members to go to, and would like to post up new events and such that the guild would try to do(like visits to the Underworld, or Fissure)

I agree that it needs to be BIGGER. Sometimes I have an announcement, and two hours later an officer has one... but if she deletes mine to put hers, she knows she'll get it so either both get mangled into an unreadable form, or hers just doesn't get posted.. however important it may be.
I think a mailing system and guild forum should be implemented, though.. to actually communicate within the game. I'm horrible at keeping records.. I don't write down email addresses or keep a book, or mailing list, and my day job really prevents me from wanting to come home and build a webpage. I'd really like to see a HUGE focus on guilds, being that it is "Guild Wars." Not... "Guild Wars + your browser of choice + email client with address book = a fully functioning guild."

Ok I've only been in a guild once (my own guild actually called Me Myself and Eye since doing it with an I was already taken...damn one man guilders..and yah I'm a hypocrite) but I believe that the reason it's 255 characters long is because that's how long the text bar is.
Why's that important? Because doesn't the guild announcement show up every time you login? So it would have to fit into the bar for it to work properly.

I also make use of abbreviations and other sorts to get the point across. I sometimes take away a letter in a word just so the message will fit.
Ex: will translates to wil

They could also give them a couple of funtionalities... like BBCode or wikipedia tags such as [B, '''; [I, ''; [URL=http://, [http://...; [LI [UL, * **...
So people could, for example, link the homepage of the guild... then the client will start the browser like when you click any of the F10 links.
Of course, with that, more space would be a must, XD.
