With profanity, it's an all or nothing sort of enforcement. While there is a chat filter that can be enabled, ANet & NCSoft have a legal right to enforce rules that prohibit such language.
Now while there is a chat filter, it's not perfect. Kids aren't stupid-if they see **** then they can figure out via context what's being blotted. And while I don't think they should be sheltered from profanity, it's more important for them to know when and where it's appropiate to swear (in my mind profanity isn't a right-it's a privalege). A public location (whether IRL or In game) is not such a time or place. Thus we all need to act like mature responsible adults and limit our language to more private locations (guild chat, team chat, vent or TS).
In a perfect world you could trust people to be responsible enough to do this. However, it's not a perfect world. It's riddled with immature jerks and morons. And it's for those people that we have the language clause in the EULA and the report system for abusive language.
So grow up and deal with it.

Yeah, kinda wishful thinking here. Not really expecting a whole change of the system, but I really wish people would take the time to consider if they really want the chat filter off.

People who say grow up to people on the internet most likely wear a helmet to bed. Thats like running up to a 6 year old who just called you a cabbage head and yelling "GROW UP!" Most people who play games are immature maybe you should deal with that? Now on to your other crap you spewed outta that retarded head of yours... So every1 should have to control themselves in team chat and all chat to protect the young people of weak of heart from getting offended? Maybe anet should add a filter that makes your chat only seen be people 18+? They don't use the filter properly and ban people for it so maybe they needa stop making stupid pvp nerfs like Smiter's boon (go look it up) and deal with some of this crap?

There is a language filter.
Reporting someone for bad language (Not having the filter on) only shows how egoistic and egocentric you are, and how you only care about you and not other people.
Anet shouldn't promote this behavour, and stop banning people for bad language... In real life, yeah, you have no filter. If someone says the "N" word, there is no magical filter that turns it into some kind of beautifull singing, so yeah, people should get punished for that.
But when there is a filter for the really conservative people, WHY the hell do they still ban people for language. Why not remove the filter alltogether then?
This is Anet's fault, as they are giving out a wrong signal. By having the filter, they show it is a mature game, but yet that protects it's younger community.
The filter says to the community: "Fcuk, Siht, ..." are part of slang (chat), and for the people who take offence to this, we have a solution.
THEN WHY THE FCUK DO YOU BAN PEOPLE FOR OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE?

Come send me a pm citing this word, a proper one at that. Wish you luck in your ban. Better yet, use it in context that relates to anything but the more modern slang variant and I'll still get ya banned.

In America.
I know this might come as a surprise to you, but there are still many many many many many many many many many many many many countries out there that do not have the freedom of speech, and amazingly enough, the Internet is not a country. Now, I know I just blew your mind with that last statement (especially since you're 18.) so I'll repeat: the Internet is not a country.
Free speech does not transfer over to the Internet. If it did, you'd be able to pretty much flame everyone everywhere. The amazing thing is, you can talk about nearly anything you want on the Internet...in your own webspace. Since no one country "owns the Internet" (and god help us all if one country did, they'd control the entire information flow of the whole world.), it is up to the owner of each thing on the Internet to set their own rules. ArenaNet sets theirs. Guru sets theirs. You can set yours on your own web space (within certain rules, namely if your IP is American and you upload child porn and someone finds out you can get screwed because there is Worldwide Cyber laws.).
Before I take my leave, I'll just blow your mind some more and let you know that you do not own your Guild Wars account, you just paid 50-250+$ to be given a license by ArenaNet to lease out the ability to join their servers. Not only do they own your account, all your characters, all your items, all your money, etc, but all you own is the box and CD and manual.
If ArenaNet wanted to they could ban you for using the letter E too much and you couldn't do jack shit about it (they are covered in any court by their EULA, nothing would stop them except no one would buy their games, but the point is they can.)
kthnx.

The Chat Filter can be worked around, which is mostly what the report is for.
Guess no one thinks of this when it happens quite a lot.

Sure, I don't agree with using racism and stuff but if someone is saying stuff like that there are so many ways around it. Got two people paying 500g for a 2 plat CoF run before because of my swearing. I said RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO when I died once because someone lured out spiders and got us a party wipe. And I can't do anything about it, because if they report me I'm going to get a 3 day ban or a week ban.
This kind of situation is rare, but seriously people need to either grow up a little or just not take a fantasy game so seriously.
Edit: Lol I think you can guess what that wordfiltered word is, I think thats fine but why cant people on GW wordfilter too?

If you are 18 and still ask this question and argue to have the right to "speech" but the "speech" is only to use the F--K word then you seriously need to not THINK OF YOURSELF ONLY and start thinking of other people.

Irony.
If you didn't get the point: you don't have a right to free speech, not on these forums, and not in Guild Wars. You have precisely zero rights; it's all in the EULA and the site rules, the owners are obligated to give you nothing at all, and they don't have to give you any reasons.
That said, you won't get banned just for cursing. You'll get banned for abusive language, which includes (but is not limited to) cursing AT someone, evading the chat filter, and excessively cursing for no reason other than to be a nuisance.

I play with Filter off because im tired of all those ---- Anyways i dnt agree with ya. There is a lot of Racist Sexist and many other ist'ers out there and they should not be allowed to play the game. So thats the verbal abuse option I do not believe that you would be banned for saying words such as the F word Sh@* and if for example you are angry at having a party wipe then you would not be banned if you let out a barrage of Fu's and BS's .Simply using words to form a Verbal missile of hate is what gets you banned.

No, they won't

There was some USA case where neighbors sued man for excessive nudity. They used telescope AND binoculars.
I very much prefer Racists and such being able to represent their views openly because THEN I can easily identify those people.

Free speech =/= ability to wear white KKK robes, stalk black people and shout at them every time they stop at red lights.
Racism, terrorism or using foul language/insults =/= freedom of speech.
Besides, games is 12+, you want to swear and shout at everyone, go play counter strike and call everyone a f**k every time you get killed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom...edom_of_speech
Profanity illegal? Check. Hate speech? Check. Obscenity? Check. There you go, you are NOT allowed to say anything you want, or write it.

Yeah, but there was a case (USA again) where a thief broke his legs on a slippery floor in a hotel and he won $2 dollars...

1) I understand that bringing age into this will only but us a lower position. (As I'm only 18 myself)
2) I do realize that Freedom of Speech is a utopian concept, and most definatly doesn't work in practical situation. (Face it, it doesn't)
3) This doesn't change the fact that at the end of the day:
THERE IS A CHAT FILTER.
It's the same when parents complain about pornography on television. EVERY television company allows their users the option to manually "block" (password protect) these programs.
I am yet to see a director of pornographic material getting sued by parents for showing porno to children... (Well, alot of Americans are dumb, nothing personal, and it prolly did happen, but you get the point)
Yes, I know I can't curse according to EULA.
No, I barely curse anyways, as I'm always on vent, and it's more easy to press Push to Talk button and shout, then to type out random stuff.
Nonetheless, Anet is sending out a wrong message. By having the chat filter, they pretty much say: "There will be foul language, but don't worry, you won't notice it".
Yes, in the EULA, they say they can ban for offensive language, BUT, here comes another big but:
One is more likely to NOT read the EULA. If we have to read the EULA for EVERY GAME, Product, or whetever we buy, we can fill our days reading EULA's, instead of actually playing the games...
When we buy a game, we ASSUME general rules apply, such as:
No cheating, no copying, no hacking, no swearing, no this, no that....
Now, we log in, and the first thing we, experienced player anyways, do, is check the "option" menu (To see the avaible setting, controls etc)
WHAT do we see there? A chat filter. Now, when you assume there is a chat filter, it's only logic to assume you're allowed to say whatever you want, as that is what the chat filter is for. (For the , once again, more conservative people)
(More often than not, people won't even have read the EULA, so the chat filter is the only signal they get)

Chat filter will do nothing if someone says "You black son of a *****" and replaces * with offensive word with a space in the middle, so that chat doesn't filter it.
And freedom of speech exists. You all just think it's "HAHA I CAN SAY ANYTHING AS LOUD AS I CAN AND YOU CAN'T DO ME ANYTHING HAHA". It's not.
Quote:

We can fill our days taking driving courses and writing exams for licenses, instead of actually driving the car.
Besides, if you have a common sense, you should know you will be punished for offensive language. You didn't know? So your parents allowed you to say anything? And you didn't get spanking for saying "f*ck" out loud? Too bad.

Which is my point. WHY have a chat filter alltogether then?
Just remove it, because it gives a "false" sense of "freedom of speech". (Type whatever you want) And it simply has no value, as people seem to report anyway, regardless of filter...

Wow I really love coming back to this, seeing one guy raise a new point and then seeing 6 other guys repeating it. I'm not American just so you know.
Ok yeap, I would really enjoy it if you read every post before just replying to my first post. I'm not asking to remove it entirely. I'm asking for it to be changed/worked around so people can't just report when someone swears. As fun as it is repeating my points over and over I'm not going too. Yes, as 20 people have said:
I'M FULLY AWARE LANGUAGE LIKE THAT IS AGAINST THE RULES.
But if you can be serious for a moment, just one, you might realize that everyone on the internet curses and swears and uses rude language. Anet aint going to ban all of them. And what I'm trying to say is they shouldn't ban them all anyway. Using that language should be fine as long as it isn't actually targetting someone/offending someone. Yeah, you can say that just saying the word offends people but then we have chat filters. If people are getting around them, then yeap go ahead and ban them, they are going around a filter designed to protect fragile people such as yourselves. But people just using a word like that once and awhile when it slips out shouldn't have to put up with a three day ban.

Fully aware of this, and I'm also aware that it means they make the rules and could do anything they want to my account without notice. I'm making a suggestion, I doubt this will be acted upon considering the state of the game but hey, it never hurts to voice an opinion
BTW: People supporting this I <3 you
P.S: Lets not quote the EULA again, I don't think any thread can quote the EULA as much as this one.
