No. You buy lockpicks from the merchant, hence the white color. They're common items.
If you don't want to miss them, read what drops.

I heard holding alt and looking at the ground is hard to do.
They don't need to be changed.

I heard that mods following the posting rules like everyone else tries to do is even harder.

I think that this is good idea, shouldn't take a lot of work on the coding end, and wouldn't hurt anyone who doesn't care whether it's changed or not.

yeah, pretty douchebaggish thing to do for a mod, i mean, not everyone has perfect vision or pays attention, i mean, i lose things all the time cause im to caught up looking for more monsters to vanquish, good pointing that out. i /sign this because its a nice idea, people lose things all the time cause its in white.... (and watch the mod that posted lose a lp cause it was in white lol!)

You don't even need "perfect" vision. Just hit the ";" key after every fight and jab the space bar key after every fight. If bots can do it, then so can players.
Honestly, its not our fault you don't bother to pick up items. Half the people I know in this game who complain about "not having any money, can you loan me 50g" don't even bother picking up white items because its "not worth it." 90% of your income in this game should be made by picking up EVERYTHING that drops and selling it to the merchant (not hoping for that super rare drop and reselling it). My suggestion is to not leave items lying around.
If lockpicks are made "gold" then so should any other item that has value that drops, like Shard or Ecto. But since the price of such items are set by the player and supply and demand, there is no way for a.net to know their value ahead of time. Since the market can change later (say some new duping bug makes ectos price drop down to 100g a piece) it would be pretty stupid to make gold items for things with inconsistant value.
After all, the original HoD sword was worth hundreds of k and was a blue item. So is the -50 grim cesta. Or the HoD axe. And those items all have value that go beyond their color. If you don't pick up some white items because you aren't paying attention, then there is always the possibility that you are going to miss something "valuable" like a destroyer core. It's not a.net job to put price values on things and anticipate the player economy. There will always be white items that are valuable that a.net can not anticipate being valuable. The best solution is to pay attention and pick up your drops.

Personally I always hold down Alt and scan what's on the ground, but then again I pick up everything. If I don't use it, I salvage it (it actually pays off well). On the subject of colors, I've always wondered why anything that drops in blue shows up in white, whereas greens, golds, and purples have their own colors. Sure blues may not be quite as popular but you never know if it could unlock something else. But /notsigned on lockpicks, just pick them up with everything else, and if you find a locked chest you'll know soon enough if you have one.

Pretty sure saying hold alt and look at drops is advice, which is constructive posting. Of course if you think the post wasn't constructive, you can always PM Inde.
We might as well change the colors of holiday drops too, then, since they're white items that are usually overlooked. Let's change the color of every white item that many players would pick up and may get overlooked. While we're at it, let's make blue items appear blue on the chat window also. It's only fair that if lockpicks get changed other in-demand whites should too, right?
...Or we as players can be less lazy and just look at the drops on the ground. Overall, I think this would be a better solution to this non-existent problem.

New threads on guru just get dumber and dumber everyday.
/notsigned. Holding Alt and watching what drops isn't so difficult.

Look, I am not stupid, I know that I can look around while holding ALT to see the drops, but forgetting something does happen, and it's frustrating to find out you forgot to pick up a lp, ten minutes after it dropped.
About the holiday items, destroyer cores and such, I believe there's a difference between leaving behind items worth 100-500 gp and a lockpick that is worth 1500 gp.

What about scrolls ? according to almost everyone who posted, they shouldn't have that gold color, but they do. I understand what you mean, but let's just say that someone is way more careful about drops in FoW or UW, than in some random explorable of Tyria, thus it's possible to leave a lockpick on the ground.
Lockpicks have a consistant and constant value, so the market change is hardly relevant in that situation.
Anyway, thanks for *considering* my idea, I guess this thread can be closed.
@Darkganni :
This is not a dumb thread, I've seen it happen to other people too, and I assumed they weren't the only ones in the whole game. I made this thread to help, not to be looked upon as some moron who can't hold ALT.

Gold scrolls were gold before they got a scroll trader. Also, it's to differentiate them from the functionally identical but poorer blue scrolls.
If you see anything pop up in chat, you don't have to read what it is, just ";" + "space". Done.

Happened to me more that once and I still don't find this idea any good.
The game shouldn't look after me like I'm an idiot and tell "oh hey, you missed an item that is worth $$$$ at current market prices, maybe you should pick it up, you know, cause it's worth $$$$ and you need money".
Gold, purple, blue, red is not indication of an item's worth. It is nice to have, but it is not the value of the item. Most golds I get are barely worth more that 500 gold... Unless GW team wants to rework the whole item grading system, there's no "yeah, go for it" from me. But who are we kidding? Even I wouldn't want to rework that.
Also, pick up everything, salvage or identify it and sell to merchant... not that hard.

I still don't know why drops don't automatically appear in our inventories, but we are rather forced to pick them up?
Or maybe - as previously suggested - have the minis be able to pick up your crap.
That - I wouldn't mind.
But changing just the color does nothing for me.

By default, semi-colon ( ; ) will auto-target the nearest drop, or sign.

That happens with lockpicks and it's pretty annoying to leave them there because they are white.
So my idea is to change them to gold items, so that we can be assured we'll notice it when they drop.
What do you think ?

I think this is just as stupid as Phantom_Flux's suggestions. Honestly, just look at the ground for a "lockpick." There's so much other important broken crap that needs to be fixed.

I want Anet to automatically put anything worth more than 1k in my inventory. When items are dropped, it is automatically checked via a database to guru to see the potential sell value of the item, and assigned to me if it's more than 1k. Thanks.
