Well i just heard on guildcast that there will be some big changes to the friends list comming soon, theres one thing i hope they also add!
I thought of something else for my wish list, Colour 'Guild TAG's' for Buddies list.
My guild recently switched to bigger alliance group & although were still friends with some of our old allies there names no longer have the Orange/Gold Tag next to them obviously but have most of them on my friends list.
While standing in Kodash i just didnt notice one of them in the same town cause there name is now merged in the mass of blue names you see in a town or outpost.
All your views are pretty good, I hope the new changes also adds a colour to buddies in your friends list and so we can at least see when a friend is in town.

I had mentioned this idea to one of my guild mates a long time ago. Right now, the friend's list is just...well....a friend's list. I use my friend's list for a lot of different purposes.
I add guild leaders/officers from other guilds in my alliance to my friends list to discuss guild/alliance issues/stuff. It is a great way to see if they are online. Being able to add groups would make it easy for me to distinguish who is in what guild and etc (since you can't few the roster of an alliance guild without getting an invite. I also have PvP friends. Making a PvP group that I can easily see who is online and not have to weed out everyone else that pretty much does PvE would be great too. And then I just got my plain friends. People I have encountered while playing Guild Wars or actual friends that I know. Having these separate from all the others will also be useful. There are plenty of other groups, but having the ability to put people in certain groups would make my life so much easier!!

As of now friends list is relatively useless. I used to add people to my friends list but always end up removing them because i cant remember who they are, or why I added them in the first place. If I at least had the ability to type in some notes about the player i add would be helpful.

The friends list is the one of the things they've barely touched since the release of GW, aside from the update they just gave us with the recent teammates section. That could be put to more use with more catagories on the list.

this would be so very very helpful, at most at least adding notes, but to be greedy, would really like the categories also

Bumping up this post because everyone thinks its a good idea, but the categories, lvl and profession still arnt in the game.
I recently added alot of people in my friendlist who play HA and vanquish areas, but i dont know who does what anymore. It would be extremely useful to place each person in a category.
Last night i asked 3 guys if they wanted to vanquish, but 2 of the 3 were HA players and never did any vanquishing. But I can't remember what every person in my friendlist does when you add alot of people at the same time.
So everyone sign this and they might update the list

There's no way I'm keeping a pen and paper list, but except for personal friends and a few people I got close to during festival events (D9 FTW!) I don't recognize a good portion of the names.

Up to 5 categories should do.
They could also add a 'client sided' list.
It could access a Friends.txt file, and store them like this:
:Category name
<character name>
<character name>
<character name>
:Category name
<character name>
<character name>
Then you'll have a limited online list, and another list in your hard drive.

I vote for that - Just expand the friends list so that you can choose where to put that person. Get a few standard categories.

/signed I would like this very much. The recent teammate and stuff is a good start but that isn't specific enough. Also can there please PLEASE be a confirmation before removing friends from the friend list because I remove friends all the time when I try to whisper them because I have my mouse setting high and those to selections are right next to each other.

I have mixed feelings about this change.
My friends list got full recently. This was a good time to evaluate the list.
All players I don't remember the name from got deleted. Those are not friends.
People I do remember by name, but I don't have/want contact with anymore are also from the list. Also not friends.
Then there are the players I remember and still have on my list.
There the categories would be usefull.
However, having a name and not knowing in what type of play they are would put them in the `don't have contact with anymore` category -> delete.
My friends list is full again, but that's no problem. I know who to remove.
But I do understand that this might be difficult for other players to manage, so I do vote in favor of categories.

hmm it could be done by "note behind the name" system so you could add a short sentence behind the name lets say with up to 50 characters and it would be nice to add same thing to guild's roaster, theres also other way to do that by some preset sentences like
"buyer", "selled", "trader", "friend", "good friend", "he helps me", "i helped him", "can't play", "irritate me" or something like that
it would be nice to see every character name of player I know (I have seen in the past) when mouse over friend list or guild roaster - sometime i remember someone by his basic nick i have stored as basic but sometimes not [lets say that u have added nick when selling a stuff and l8tr meet him while playing the Deep and u will remember him with the deep char better than the trader one and when chceking for him to call him to join u will see him with new nick and as basic "also known" nick the thrader one so u will have to hardly remember who was the player you are searching for]
