Name checking
I couldn't find a thread like this in search, and I was surprised no one had given any thought to it, so here we are.
I always wish that you could check for a name before you make one. Or that it would require you to check it, so you could see if its used, and it gives you a screen "Are you sure?" Because alot of the time I waste time loading the guy i just made, logging out, deleting him, and making another just like him.
Some people may say "Oh, well don't use a name you wouldn't mind using".
I might agree with that, but what would be the hurt to check your name?

just add the name to the friends list while playing and if it's not being used then go make him.

What if you're making your first character? I haven't thought of a trick like that - and i've been playing for 39 months. I still prefer to check my name when I've made all the changes to my character how I like them.

Friends list server does that, and that was the second thing that popped into my head, right after choosing a name you want in the first place. This is unnecessary, but I don't suppose it would hurt.

Indeed, never thought of that trick. But why would you want to check a name prior to making a character? I mean, you make a character, customize like you wish, think up a name, enter it. Done.
If the name is taken, think up another one.
Implementing this won't have any negative effects, but I just don't see the use.

blah turbo beat me to it...adding a name to ur friends list is the way to do it.
well...if ur undecided on a couple names that u want and are not taken then buy tons of character slots and make all those names...then u can delete the names u didnt like and waste a ton of money.

I'm sorry I just reeaally dont get what you are trying to explain here. As far as I see this, you make a name, and as soon as you see the name you find out you don't like it after all?
I'm not sure what you're trying to say but looks like failure to me. Just think of a good name, if its used then you got bad luck, or you can PM whoever has it and ask if he could delete it for w/e amount of money.
If its not used you got the name, and you should be happy
We not need 100 of pointless things in GuildWars so it takes long to load, install and w/e just to make a few people happy.
/notsigned or you should explain me some better if I don't understand you

i am not sure what you want to suggest here.
how can anyone make a character with same name as other players? the game would not allow you to do it. so whatever name you think you want to use, all you need to do is type them in the name box, if its taken, the game will prompt you to use another name. there's no need to log into the game at all...

Because I want to pay 30$ for some names.. right.
Also, A name checker wouldn't make your game any slower than adding a name to your friend's list.
Most of your people's logic is just to decide a name and don't enter something you don't like.. but it most oftenly happens with PvP character creating.
I honestly don't know whats so hard to grasp about a utility that checks if a name is used in the character name creation screen.
There honestly is no hurt whatsoever to checking a name, and more often than not my friends and I always enter a name we don't end up liking.. and I realize after this most of you will still say "just don't enter a name you don't want to use".. but tbh, there is NO hurt to this implementation at ALL, it would add no more lag/framerate drop.
For those of you who are still confused.. A name checker will see if the name you want to use is already being used, and if it is, it can suggest minorly different names using a synonym system or adding a number or two. It would allow the user to redesign his name completely, in a sense. I honestly not having a name checker is nonsense. Guild Wars 2 will need a name checker, atleast I hope.

I can understand that, and as posted, I'm not against such a feature.
But I still don't get how you could possibly make a character with a name you don't want.
You mean you want to name your character...
I Got Big Ectos
...but that's already taken, so you enter.....
I Got Big Ectoz
..which is taken as well, so you start entering random variations....
I Got Big Ectooz - taken
I Got Big Ectoos - taken
I Got Biig Ectooz - taken
I Got Biig Ectoos - taken
I Gots Biig Ectoos - accepted!
So you now got a character called I Gots Biig Ectoos. Only..... you don't like it because you don't like that particular variation? And the game surprised you by actually accepting that name?
Truly, I'm trying to figure out what's your concept here.

by not letting you make a character name the game is already checking it. It checks it when you enter it and there's a big green tick next to it. I just don't get the point honestly...
