I think it's a good idea. I also think you should be able to change face/hair/skin etc of appearance.
However, as mentioned previously this could be abused. Solution? Simple: make it so that you can edit your character name and appearance but you can only do it every 6 months (or some other time span) since the character's creation. And to avoid losing unlocks or flags by GMs on an account, put a hash string or value on a character that stays assigned no matter what they change as far as name or appearance.

I agree, also would be nice if you could add a feature to allow us to change the looks of our char as well.

Agree with Phoenix. Once in 6 months is good enough for me.
Also, I think hair style and color should be changeable at an NPC (for a certain cost, like 2,5k or something) but skin color, size and faces should be locked.

i found that armor makes me rethink my character's identity, so changing the name kind of goes along with that. So, when new armor comes out... a new name is a nice option.
i didn't read all the pages, but i know others have mentioned changing other features (like skin colour, hair, etc) and i was thinking if u could change the face models to a different campaign (ie... changing a prophecies character to have a NF face)?

there are a couple of things that worries me on this.
1: character name hyjacking... Or worse spoofing to insult someone..
(not really much diffrent then now expect if the penalty for steep for doing it people will not abuse it. If its free it will change all the time, and that could be a problem...)
2: Scammers changing names so their transactions on the scam are harder to trace. Again, with the current system the name stays reserved for a certain period of time and kinda locked in your account even after you delete that character, at least for a while. So scammers are more easily tracked.
3: Gold Resellers. We almost got this problem licked, it would be really bad to give them a new avenue to allow them to randomize their character names after every transaction so as to remove log tracks back to their accounts. I suppose if you only allowed a name change once or maybe twice a year at the MOST it would not be a problem, But if allowed freely, I can see this being an issue that would make the Admin staff at anets job a lot harder.
4: Losing the original name to someone that will abuse it and you may get the blame for it... That could be a bad one... I know there are many that would love to get me in trouble just to be rid of me in fan forums and in games cause they object to getting reported when they sell or buy gold in the open, or they find some nasty exploit. The point is I have basically stopped doing that as most people just want to cheat and be left alone. so be it... But I have my fair share of enemies I know for a fact would be trying to spoof my names so that they could possibly try to get my account banned. I'm sure I am not alone. Some of these really get off on causing trouble in any way possible, and they would do it any time so as to get their jollies from it.
I think as long as there is a reasonable limit on this that it would be ok. I would much prefer just allowing us to use the gladiator name for all characters on the account like we do for torunements, and that would be great. 1 name for all 12 characters would be fantastic. But I know others will not like that idea.
As to the reroll on the cosmetics, Sure why not... Make it like 10k or something... would be fine by me, and most others... but the name change issue is the only thing I would worry about at this time that would keep that from happening.

Everyone got WAAAAY too used to the fact that you can change anything and everything. I was excited when i heard that you can change your attr points in outposts, then I found out you can change your 2ndary prof aswell, which i could get on board with... then all of a sudden you can change profession with a click of a button in any town, and load builds from a template within a second... and so cookie-cutting came in place.
No more strategizing before a mission or a difficult quest. Now you go with a specific build or you dont go.
AND NOW you want players to be able to change their names and appearance whenever they feel like aswell... seriously
It's an Role-playing-game... You don't get to do these things

Because not assuming your choice breaks with playing a role. And also because we'll only see people endlessly switching between the most ridiculous names.
Imagine all the "<other player's name> is gay" type of names you'll see coming and going.

- Security issues
- Because Anet will give us the option to take our character names with us to GW2, won't like to see that getting broken.

Ladies and Gentlemen, though I am not a Dev for Guild Wars I have helped with some free online games of lesser caliber in the past and let me say this:
Changing the name of the character will not cause a loss of data for that character. Your character would still retain what quests/missions/titles it had accomplished..... AND it would retain it's history including logs, scammers, accounts being flagged would still be flagged if they changed their name. Any intelligent programmer won't make the "name" the ID in the database for your character. Most likely there is a md5 or "hash string" that is assigned to your character upon creation. If not they could simply add one so that no matter what you changed the name to they could still pull you up for violations. And it should store your previous name for that purpose as well in the database. Obviously they already store old names since your character names stay reserved for you after you delete them (at least for a time). What's one more column in the table that stores your account and characters in their server database?
As Shakespeare wrote:
"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet"
Yes, it would. And your character would still be flagged as a scammer and chat logs would still be accessed even if you changed your name.and/or appearance Granted, it would take a little work on the Dev team to set it up, but don't think for a second that they would incorporate this new ability to change name and appearance without first making sure they would still be able to see flags and logs on that character regardless of the name change. They are better programmers than that. I don't always like their decisions with game changes, but I DO know they aren't stupid enough to let that big of a loophole into adding this feature.
And as I said earlier, make it so that you can only do it every 6 months after character creation or even only after your yearly birthdays. Then there wouldn't be so much logs to store of name changes for tracking purposes since it would be limited in when it could be done to a reasonable frequency.
