Your items don't seem to be name based. They are character based.
Try it: start a character with whatever name u like. Delete it but keep his/her armor and weapon. Remake the character with the same name (even the same looks if u want to) and try to use ur old character's customized stuff on the new one. Won't work...

And the most simple solution is to let the players change their name ONLY ONCE after their characters turn into a 1-year-old (12 months...). After they turn into a 2-year-old, let them change again but ONLY ONCE. Charging fees is not really necessary.
Scammers would have to wait 1 year to be able to change. (+ I think this can be traced by ur account history: what names u had and when u changed.)
Ppl who are desperate about it, could at least be sure that in a few months or even less they can change. Or if their char is already 1 year old, then they automatically get the option but ONLY ONCE.

All of my characters in every game I've played up to this point have been assassins. I like RPing the hired killer. When Prophecies came out that proffession wasn't available, so I picked the closest thing, a ranger, then name him 'Medra The Assassin', and put a ton of hours into him.

Then, along comes Factions and now you can make a sin. So now I have an Assassin named 'Medra Deathblade' and a ranger named 'Medra The Assassin'. That doesn't make much sense. I'd like to rename my Ranger with a new last name/title.

P.S. And I'm sure there are more people out there who have the same problem. And I agree with about a time limit. It's not like you need to change your name that often.

despite peoples claims that scammers and griefers will abuse this, i'd have to sign on to this.

scammers and griefers already change their characters names often. so what difference does it make?

I believe you should not be able to make any change to character ident after it's creation. Just put thought into your names and then live with them.

If you don't like the name, don't use it. BTW, if you complain about you wasting time and effort, how long does it take to realise you don't like a name? I understand if you made a character in profecties called ???? the assassin (or maybe ???? the ritualist, but I doubt that). I think the scamming thing will be worse to fix than having name changes though. If I sounded offensive in any part of this post I apologize as I didn't mean it. Really.

i also would like a feature in the friends list that updates the ignored and other friends names if they change their names

Only if it requires a large sum of money, say, 30k gold to change your name. It should not be considered to be a decision made on a whim... if you want to change your name, make it so that it hits it where it hurts the most on scammers, their wallets.

For those of you who don't like the idea.....don't use it. It would be an OPTION.

If it's possible to incorporate into the game for people to use if they wish then do it. If you don't like it then ignore it.

Perhaps a character at the end of a new realm for Lyssa who fro a gold cost allows the changing of your characters name and/or appearance, pay per change. That way they wouldnt have 500 people changing there name at any given time, and it'd be an awesome gold sink. I mean I remember at one time someone mentioning this may be on option in the online store, but I'd much rather spend in game gold on this.

The GW community is already anonymous enough the way it is...you can SCAM 1000 people off and get out easily and all, being able to "remake yourself" would be just tad stupid cause would make the scam problem even bigger!!!

You would be able to do ANYTHING you wish and get away in 2 seconds.

IF this is ever implemented i hope they make it cost like the same as a fow armor if not more, its a gold sink right?! SO make people who REALY want to change this COMPLETELY useless (and anti-community btw) feature to pay the right ammount for it, OR simply make it an online store option (even better), so you gotta pay like 5US$ per name change or so.
