Paragon Spear Ideas
I have a couple ideas to give Paragons a little boost in the Random Arena Department. I really like the skill Spear Swipe. It's linked to Leadership(Paragon main attribute) and it has melee range. I was thinking that it would be nice to let Paragon's use skills in Secondary Professions(warrior, dervish, assassin) that are classified as "Melee"(meaning as long as you have a melee weapon you can use the skill) attacks while wielding a spear as a melee weapon. You could link this usage to a certain number of points poured into the Leadership attribute which would make it so that only Paragon primaries would have access to using a spear as a melee weapon. It would still be balanced because you would have to pour points in Leadership, Spear Mastery(to use the spear) and whatever attribute you were going to use for a shield. This could make for some interesting damage and lead to a little more variety for Paragon primaries in RA.
Any thoughts?
**EDIT**
My second idea here to buff the Paragon is aimed at making them have to spend less points in so many attributes. The Warrior is allowed to use it's Primary attribute(Strength) in equipping a Shield whereas the Paragon's Primary is Leadership and does not have a shield tied to it. So in effect you have to have points in Leadership, Command(or Motivation) for a shield, and Spear Mastery. I understand doing this for PvE as a support class but this hampers play as a Paragon in the 4v4 format. I believe that there should be Leadership shields for the PvP only characters. This wouldn't effect other classes at all because it is the Paragon's Primary. This also wouldn't effect PvE because Leadership shields would only be available in the PvP equipment window. You could essentially buff the Paragon class for PvP with 1 item.

Sounds ok to me. If they want to buff paras and change how useful they are they should make better and more useful spear attacks. Melee spear attacks and Ranged, but have the spear auto attack with range. Also, better shield attacks and versatility with paragons. AoE damage from attacks and less awful/useless shouts too. They could make a spear attack that does AoE dmg in a straight line in front of the paragon only, in a single ray. They could call it spear of light or something cheesy. What a poorly made class... sigh. I love paras regardless...

The idea crossed my mind as well. Considering that there's already a melee spear skill, there's no reason there shouldn't by synergy with other melee skills. I don't know what code ANet uses, but it should be feasibly to classify the spear as both a melee and a ranged weapon.
I think it's just plain silly to link the ability to use them to leadership or somesuch though. First of all, the skill system in GW is segmented so that kind of skill crossover doesn't happen, and i like the system.
The only problem is that most of the melee skills that come to mind fall into either the Strength or Scythe Mastery category, so there goes any kind of paragon synergy. A change like that would really only benefit spear warriors.

As Gennadios says, the only prob about this is the lack of non-primary melee attacks. Adding a few Melee attacks to Leadership should do the trick.

Spears do not need any kind of boost at all.
Random Arena does not need to be the focal point for balance.
"Leadership" and "balanced" don't belong in the same sentence.

Because that needs another attribute to invest in.

I also think we need an RA damage buff to all of the Paragon Spear skills. A few of the skills with the highest damage require a 3 second spear "toss". Again, this isn't for PvE, just RA. Please make Paragons playable for 4v4.

I think you are just bad at paragon. For 8v8 the paragon needs, if anything, a reduction in both auto attack spear damage and damage from spear skills.

It's really just to make it playable in 4v4. You can play one, but Paras are designed for 8v8 not 4v4. This is a suggestion area, you don't have to flame. Sign it or don't, but being rude does nothing productive.

it's and interesting idea, there are very little options with spears, but to say spears are under powered is simply not true. Spears own in RA with there easy of applying daze, and also work great with other builds such as rangers and dervs.

If there was an improvement in their 4v4 abilities, sure.
Over the years in GW I've come to regard Random Arena as being far more important than GvG and HA, since the people in GvG and HA tend to be worthless, arrogant pieces of shit who've soaked up far too much of ArenaNet's attention in GW's lifespan - and they do not deserve consideration, at all.

Round up some friends and make an epic guild to beat those arrogant shitters. I'd love to see you try.

If you want to use a spear as a melee weapon, just run into melee range. The damage is the same, it is only the proximity that changes. If you can't do that yourself and want to be moved to melee range automatically then do weapon swaps after you get in range or use a skill like Shock.
I see no reason to make them melee instead of ranged. Some of those skills (Wild Blow, Distracting Blow, etc.) would become a problem if used at range, and making a Paragon move to melee range just to use that one skill (or more) with a spear is silly. If you need to use those skills then you can easily do a weapon swap.
I want to throw my daggers so I can be a ranged character and not have to use a bow or spear..... can we make Daggers throwable?

Dancing Daggers?
I like the idea of giving Paragons some melee attacks. The Deep Wound for example is overpowered on a ranged class. Making Paragon attacks that inflict it melee range would fix that.
Still, pretty much left that would have to be fixed for Paragons. It's a good start, though.

The op isn't suggesting skill changes, only the ability to use other meele attacks.
