If i had to hide from someone after i told him 'hey, but i'm busy', i wouldn't keep that person on my friend list.

^ This. There's also the Offline option if you don't want people to see where you are. I like being able to see that people are in UW etc so it's not a good idea to whisper them. I like bein able to see if someone is on their pre-character so I can hop on mine and say hi. Another MMO I played had a /find <character name> command that would tell you where another player was, what server, which district, which map. To me, that's more intrusive than just the map location.
As said as well, if you need to "hide" from someone, why have them on your list in the first place? You realise you can remove them from your list and add them later if you don't want them to see where you are at that moment in time, right? Also, why be friends with someone if you're gonna do stuff like that? My boyfriend asked why I was in Spamadan the other day and I bluffed it although I was buying him some sweet points as a surprise.
Come on guys, it's not hard. Don't give the devs more work over something so small with multiple solutions as it is. People need to be more upfront with each other imo and develop the skills to turn around and say "Hey, I'm busy right now". That's what the busy status is for after all. If people keep buggin ya, maybe they shouldn't be on your friends' list in the first place? Just sayin.

I actually really like the feature, but I'm pro choice and think we should have the option to disable it.
It's a very simple request really - all it needs is a little tick box on the interface.
People have many different ways of dealing with others socially, and what seems right for one person might be socially very awkward for another. It is interesting that the people who are most vehemently /notsigning this seem to have problems accepting that not everybody does things the same way they do ;-)

This is my information to give, not yours to take.
But because there is a bunch of really dumb people here who who fail to understand this AND because this pisses me off enough that I actually want to explain it (especially since I just spend a week over at GW2Guru explaining the EXACT same thing), I'll take the time and expand on it.
I have a few people on my Friend List that I adore. They have my email, they know my name, they know where I live, they are my friends on Facebook/MSN/... We regularly keep in touch and they know what I am up to and they know where I am up to it. They know who and when I RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO with and I even RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO with some of them.
These aren't just people I play a game with. These are the people I share my life with and I just happened to have met them in a game.
But given the chance, I'd disable sharing my location even with them.
Why?
Because my name, my mail or even who I RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO with are all information that I can share in a controlled fashion.
Given the way this feature was implemented, I can't control it. I am always FORCED to share it. And given what the feature does - there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON WHATSOEVER why it should be implemented in this way.
And of course, lets not forget the stupidity of incorporating a feature that is supposed to bring the community closer together and then it ends up with a certain part of the community having to delete people off their friends list or setting themselves to offline. People are distancing themselves from the community because of it.
So once again,
This is my information to give, not yours to take.
Bug me if you want to know where I am.
Toggle it.

The other problem with the current system is that it can (and has already) sparked drama about "I thought we were friends! Why can't I see where you are right nao?!!?" ....
Merely adding an option to hide the bracketed location could cause the same problem, my suggestion is to make it like the grey buttons on Guru and display as [Hidden] or something.

Bizarrely, six out of six guildies who I've met online since this got introduced have asked me why they're not on my friends list. Apparently, I'm weird for not having them on there when they're already visible on the guild roster. I don't need people on two lists.
Ironically, the people who I'd have no problem with being able to see my location at all times, can't see it because they're on the wrong list. All kinds of nuts.

For everyone not signing this... It's called "option" for a reason.
You feel it's useless? You've already "grown a pair" and don't need excuses?
Fine. You'll likely never need such an option, so what's the difference for you anyway?

For the most part, I knew who my mutual friends were. I also know who I have added that did not have me on their lists. I have no objections to having my mutual friends knowing where I am, but I can understand there are people that want to remain hidden.
Instead of showing locations, use colors to show mutual friends. Green for guild members, gold for alliance members, & blue for mutual friends. The rest can remain white on list.

the dervs didn't have to make this shitty 'update' the dervs also haven't mended things like soul twisting, the map glitches in HA, and armour bugs
lovely story about buying sweets, just lovely, and relevant too
what perhaps you don't understand is a pvp friends list is a little more delicate than a pve list, it's a smaller word and sometime's juggling relationships is important, sometimes that means lying
all those who say things like grow some balls, i suspect you're all pvers, grow some balls and try pvp

I hate this new FRIENDS list, the greatest feature in GW is now gone, no more privacy.
PS:you gonna have this feature at least from now on people need to get your permission to add you to friends list...

What a unnecessary thing to add. What's the point of knowing where your friends are - if you need to, just ask them through PM?
On the other hand, it's a great feature for stalking your friends.
Watching their every move...
Which level of which dungeon they're on (hey I need that dungeon too, why didn't you ask me to join ya?), which mission they're in (hey are you doing ZM at the moment?), where their secret AFK town is (ahh, so this is where you hide all the time!).
Sure, it's can be helpful in some circumstances but at least give us the option of disabling it... not everyone like having their every move exposed.
+1 on the 'I thought we're friends, why can't I see your location???' scenario.

I think an option to disable show location it's "called" by a feature like this. I agree with Upier: "This is my information to give, not yours to take."
The option should be: for all mutual-friends/for none [/for guildies]
They made recently a step into more "legit privacy" with "Log-in as" choose online status in selection-char screen... and one step back with this location feature...
Sometimes ANet introduces new UI features forgetting an useful option to toggle/customize them just to add it some days later.
(Examples: DamageTextSize without option for custom size, NameTagFading without toggle...)
And please let guildies see my location (If I have enabled it) in Guild window (not needed to be mutual friends...).
Have fun
Ciao
OT: Instead of location, I'd like a customizable brief text all my friends can see.
(I know it's a different feature and more resources/time cost but I think very useful ... maybe GW2)

No problem with it, I kinda like it to see where some are.
