I don't know who thought this would be a good idea without an opt out or some sort of opt in/opt out control.
I don't need big brother monitoring where I am in the game and I shouldn't have to hide online to keep my privacy.

So just an FYI, I put up a comment on John Stumme's talk page about this issue.

I'm heart-broken to find out how many people do NOT have me on their friends list
/kidding
But seriously, I'm just going to sign this to support the small amount of people who are made uncomfortable by it. This feature isn't even useful since, if you really want to know someone's location then YOU CAN JUST ASK THEM. If you're too shy to whisper someone in-game then why are you having that person on your friends list? All the people who are supporting this feature seem very rude and anti-social O.o which is weird, considering the type of people that this feature is supposed to be helping.
This useless feature is making some people uncomfortable, and that's reason enough to either remove it or give people more control over it.

to everyone who says "no way" :
this idea says "option to disable" NOT "disable"
/signed
privacy in a game? yes
or else let us show our friends their stuff while we're at it (sarcasm)
when i came back to GW yesterday, all i thought was: where's my privacy gone to?
i always wanted an option to ASK friends by sending request to observe their character, but not this.....
sry, but all the stuff (except for pre sear with hat/costume maker) i see is new to me, made me like: they actually thought about this all???
and this was the worst part
so yea, either remove it for all i care, or let us choose whether we wanna be spied by others or not
even in games i think privacy is required, especially in an online game
some hate the privacyless HoM calculator, yet they had to do something like this....

Not exactly sure if you both read the original post, but I am not suggesting for location info display to be removed in game all together, I am just suggesting a simple option to disable the location info sharing between mutual friends. It would give users peace of mind to choose whether or not to share their location info...
Btw the "grow a pair" comment...seriously?

agree with you, strange that people make this some sorta macho thing, but i guess they're just angry, also, i can understand why people want to disable this, i do, but i don't understand why anyone would want other people not to be able to, even if they're happy with it, why do they care?

I would agree with a third "contacts" list in the friends panel, between 'Friends' and 'Ignored', that won't have the mutual location feature.
So instead disabling the option, or having to add an option for each 'friend', you just add to the Contacts list instead the Friends list all those people you want to keep in contact with for whatever reason (transactions, appointments, etc) but that are not your friends, you can just move them to that list instead.
But hiding from your friends? No. You don't do that. Friend will be friends, and don't hide from each other.

So I have followed this topic, and given it a thought.
I sorta see why some dislike this new feature, then again I don't really see any harm in it as such.
I do like Mithrans idea of a "contacts" options so you can seperate those random people, trade partners and such folk from the actual friends.

My friends are in my guild. My friends list was just for the random people I'd meet up with to either trade with, run somewhere, or help with quests or missions. They weren't really friends, just casual in-game acquaintances.
Thanks to the update, I removed everyone from my friends list, and don't have to worry about managing that added convenience turned inconvenience.
I set myself as offline more often than not just so I don't have to take the time to repeatedly tell people that I'm busy and don't feel like helping them out.
General rule of thumb: Don't respond to random PMs if you don't want people bothering you incessantly.
"Social networking" is for the birds.

Nice compromise. I'd like to see this implemented as well. I’ve wanted to have friends and business associates separate since I first started playing.

i dont get it "dont hide from friends" and "dont try to act like you're busy" (which is a choice people make)
its not about that, its just that a lil privacy would be better, instead of hiding from friends, cuz thats what offline status is for, or should they remove that too?
some here tell everyone they should be forced to show others what they do... what the heck?
i dont have to hide anything (even though i rarely play anymore), but i do want some privacy, and i think others deserve that aswell
