It's not so bad now. But when GW2 comes out (and I suspect the majority of the playerbase to migrate to GW2), I can imagine it becoming quite hard to find players willing to adventure/open the gate, especially if you're not playing during the "active hours".
Teaching new players how to team-up and make friends isn't a bad idea at all. However, if it's not possible to find other (willing) players, it just becomes a hindrance.
Like some other people in this thread suggested, perhaps it's a good idea to:
-make players able to open the gate on their own, but still add some kind of penalty (cost, level restriction).
-make players able to open the gate on their own, but encourage teamplay and reward going there with an other player in some way.

if this happens i will /quit and /cutmywrists cause all players will be noobs cuz none will learn anything anymore not like me!
i use lever as a team now I can defeat Bahumet! i rox!
Iv'e started Proph atleast 10 times and taken 2 chars to the end of the campaign,
since 2005.
Since 2005 i have used that lever ONCE! on 1 character.... it was a waste of time too was better off leaving pre-searing to "learn" something.
TEAM PLAY IS DEAD get over it people. I live in +12 timezone its been dead since about 2009 for me.
Bottom line SIMPLE request SIMPLE reasons, stop flaming for the sake of it, its not up too you to tell us if its a waste of anets time, everything is on a 7 year old game......

How about... no. Such garbage response shouldn't belong in GWG.
Anyway, it's pretty obvious that ANet acknowledges the prema pre community by adding achievements and daily stuff... ancient annoyance like this lever really should be done away with. Other than party size, maybe pre characters can 'unlock' more perks if other chars on the same account completed Prophecies.

I can't see the reason why they even added this at launch of proph, if they want to encourage people to play together there should be bonuses for having a team full of players with no hench of heroes but not forcing you like this.

As it was supposed to be just a tutorial quickly passed and going over the wall was just a "bonus" for parties, there was really nothing forcing you to go over there. It only became relevant with the born of a perma-pre community, as going over the wall is sort of a necessity when you stay in there forever.

true, it was something that was needed for LDoA title, but now it can be obtained by just killing outside foible's fair with the "farmer hamnet" quest
and you dont really "need" charr bags and salvage
that stuff just makes pre more fun, so that your char can "live" there, Anet saw that people wanted that, and made daily quests
now the northern lands are just for those who enjoy staying in pre, not if people only want LDoA
so i have faith in Anet, and i think they will make the gate to stay open after you pulled(used) the lever
i mean, last few years, Anet has john stumme and his co workers to make things better not just for money, but also to keep people happy
look at survivor being obtainable after deaths, thats not that much needed, but not all survivors buy hammers (quest item) to get easy survivor
and so they made people happy by letting the chars reobtain (is that a word?) the title after death
i am no programmer*, but if they can fix hard bugs within 2 days (or even 1 day) then programming that lever to instead of closing again, stay open for a minute or so (or until you zone) should be piece of cake
*no programmer, but i know how some basics look like, as i've been into that stuff, and not too long ago started again*
maybe 1 or 2 command lines could do the trick (depending on GW's engine)
anyway, pre sear has lots to offer, but that lever doesnt teach you much, as in most missions in post you just use a lever once for the whole mission
so removing or extending the time after opened could do enough
newbies will see it like: hey, what does this do? oh, it opens a gate, lets go there
and then get beaten up, and ask for help for the charr
this is based on what i see alot, as newbies keep coming, and always wanna see whats behind the gate
then kill weak trees, and then die at the charr, so they ask for help

Well, personally I have never had a problem with that level, there is always someone more than willing to either do it for spare change or to accompany me up there. But as long as it makes people happy . . .

thanks, I'm sure Anet has no plans to change this now but I hope they fix this before gw2 is out.

add my vote for solo gate, esp when gw2 goes live. the already small pop will get even smaller. I mean really, is it gonna kill someone if the gate is solo-able?

The sad thing is that at lot of players have never set foot across the wall and experienced one of the funner aspects of this game, especially with the fire imp allowing you to comfortably solo the area. The only reason I got into it was that I started using my second account to open the gate myself, mainly because I'm just really antisocial (and I'm sure I'm not the only one like that).

well, all the "naysaying" could be from people who dont like changes (no offense meant at all)
and yea, those gate openers would need to find a new hobby, like play the game
make it opening for 1 minute, so you still learn about opening a gate, the way you do in some missions
and as i prolly said before: you dont get to any places where you need others to open a gate to get through the first.... long time
also: if most people join GW2 instead of GW, how would anyone have to learn about it anyway?
most people who will be new in GW after GW2, will either quit (maybe join GW2 instead), or have a bad time finding others, and skip the gate opening part
EDIT:
i have a better idea:
add a handle or such to open the gate with the lever
that way people will learn about GW mechanics AND we can use the gate even after GW2 comes
also, the gate or bridge opener mechanic is much more common than the 2 player (or 2 accounts in some people's case) gate opener
if anet would just add that handle and put it near the lake at the grawls, near the portal to green hills county, so that it is easy to find, yet people have to walk some with a bundle
hows that?

After GW2 is released, co-op will be pretty much dead, so this should be fixed, at least after GW2 is released. Its a 5 minute fix, not that hard to do
