Muskets aren't needed with all the magic and magic items floating around (things would evolve different with different powers available). As far as crossbows go....i say wait and put them in in expansions(new ranger section?). I would like to see some kind of ranged weapon for survival so that you can have some punch as a secondary along with the awesome survival stuff which often gets the second seat.(disclaimer-i can't claim this as an original crito idea but i see value in it)

I don't think crossbows and rangers mix well. It's not that a ranger couldn't easily master a crossbow were he given the chance, but it really doesn't fit with the overall theme. It'd be like if you gave a warrior a hand-cannon. Why go up and slash em when I can "bust a cap" from here?
In any case, if they did do crossbows for rangers, they would have to be given an entire attribute line all to themselves. For the ranger? I completely disagree. For another class? Sure... Why the hell not?

Why not give them to another class then? I could see a Necromancer using a hand crossbow personally.

I dunno. I really just don't see them with Rangers or any class at this point. Mostly because rangers are trained experienced rangers. Not army recruits who have to use a crossbow because they aren't trained in proper archery. They are also wild men that seem to stray away from overly complicated things. I could see a new engineer of some sort class using them as has been mentioned before.

I agree with Weezer and others who think of the Ranger as a one who is very adept with a variety of bows, and other more "natural" weaponry, but not particularly skilled with the heavier accoutraments of warfare. I'd think another class, maybe even a warrior, would be better suited to using a crossbow.

Given the armor designs we do see in the game, it's actually somewhat odd that we don't see crossbows. They'd been in use for centuries by the time we got armor like you see some of the warriors wearing.
As far as using them in GW-style combat, it's about as realistic as using a bow. Frankly, bowmen should be mincemeat if they get engaged in melee and do something other than drop their bows and draw their swords.

The English monarchy always favorised archery and motivated the yeomanry to practice often. Hence the archery contests and the legend of Robin Hood we all know. The English did not really need crossbows with such bow skills.
As for crossbows, with their inhuman weight and the complicated reloading procedures, they are of limited use on the open field. During castle sieges, the defendants would have a better use for them.
