Good point about strength Redfang, thanks. I'm just wondering what "beat on a little less" really translates to.
And I feel ya Madog. The undead do bite the big one. but my sword looks so badass on my little girl warrior.

Shields ADD to the AL from front damage. All other AL on pieces are localiced.
Having 80AL on shield (like other armor pices) would mean you get 160AL from attacks from the front.... "I don't thinks so"
As for using a foci - get both and switch ffs - after you burnt the extra 15E (12E natural +3E max bonus, unless you count +15 with -1 reg modifier on weapons) and start getting into regeneration/upkeep phase the extra on the top (as with energy storage) means zipp. No reason to have an extra max unless you want to cast 20+ skills.
Or the other way around - you need an extra 15E to do something special? Switch and take the extra damage to cast the skill.
Same reason you should allways carry a longbow so you can switch and pull stupid mobs or pluck a kiting enemy.
You have 4 weapon sets - use them!

No...
You can equip ANYTHING, but if you don't have the right requirements, it will work very badly.

I disagree with that assessment. The reason is that they ADD to your defense. If you have only a 40 defense shield, you would bump your defense against some hits to 120. That cuts the damage taken in half. It's too much. LOTS of balancing has gone into this game, and while it may be that they could push max def shields into the 20-25 range MAYBE, I think a comparable defense to a helmet is rediculous with reguards to the way this game calculates damage. Now on the other hand, if it caused some of the hits to be blocked, or some of them to be lessened in damage, maybe you can mimic the effects of a shield that way. In PvP especially, shields are VERY useful, lowering your damage taken by over 20% lowers the burden on your healers.
I do like the idea of an offhand item for early in a battle when you want to get a few spells off, epecially if you are going to have 2 maintained enchants and no regen, you can ensure that you still have some energy if you need a healing breeze or something.
