Default Guilds, PVP, and Voice over IP

The advantages of having a well working Voice Over IP system for Guild PVP is obvious.

But setting up Voice Over IP can be a little tricky. Well... Recording sound while playing a video game can be tricky anyway.

What experiences have you guys had with Voice Over IP?

Myself... I got an ADSL connection that I use in conjunction with Dyndns.org to host a persistant Voice Over IP chat server for my guild.

I have experimented around with Roger Wilco, Ventrillo, and Teamspeak server software.

My guild has had problems with this software because of the microphone picking up the game sound while they are trying to use the Voice Com. We have also had MANY problems with "Full-Duplex" communication.

We have tried tinkering with the settings in the server, and the client software. We have also tried reducing the volume of the ingame sound by almost 100% and we still have problems.

I remember the Voice over IP system in Counter-Strike sounded like a Cell Phone once it was set up correctly.

Just give me your 2 Cents Please.

Ya, Ive played Counter-Strike for a good 4 years now(and im not going to stop). And i know what you mean when u say it sounds like a cell phone. I've used ventrillo, and I love the program. But when you say "the microphone picking up the game sound while they are trying to use the Voice Com." are you using speakers? I know that ventrillo has microphone setting to hear the sounds that are playing on your computer, as well as your voice, but Myself and my friends from my CS clan never have problems hearing other peoples sounds over the mic(unless a fan is blowing into the mic or they are playing with speakers).

I think a program like ventrillo would be a great idea for a guild. It not only helps with communication, but also just offers a place to hang out.

Ventrilo works great. In PvP or PvE - amazing how much easier it makes PvE, and it is a virtual necessity in PvP. Many players have speakers and have no problems, I suppose if you played with very loud speakers it could cause issues. I generally use headphones anyway.

Topic is a little confusing. Voice Over IP is the name of a type of Telephone network and subject to CRTC or FCC regulations. Roger Wilco is something compleatly different, where it exists souly on the internet, and is an unregulated technology.

My experiences with voice software have been both good and bad. I find most public implimentations (such as a global or team chat, built into the game) to be rather annoying sometimes, as it often attracts a poor croud.

As for Vent and Teamspeak, I like the Teamspeak interface a little more, but find Vent to be better. These also attract a poor croud, but as it is a little more private, this issue can easily be fixed through moderators.

Moderation is key.
