Because thumping techno or squealing rawk guitars would just seem... wrong? Plus when you are just exploring or trying to have a conversation it would be extremely annoying. The music in GW is simply pretty background music.
However, I can see an argument for context-sensitive music, so that when you do engage in battle the music changes to something more boisterous.

Well personally I do enjoy the Celtic kind of music - the style that a lot of MMOs use - but personally I don't listen to GWs music. For some reason I tune it out more so than any other MMOs.
So now I just pop in a CD or a record (<3 uncles who give you boxes of kick ass records) or open Winamp and choose my own musical preferences.
Guns 'n' Roses is going right now.

Right now, there are almost no balance in the music... it is constantly the same style, I am fine with it if it was the same style for for most places... but that doesn't mean I am fine with it ALL over the place =/
anyway, you know what I mean from the start... so why go with the "thumping techno or suealing rawk guitars would just seem... wrong?" It is like you trying to say I am a stereo-type that all I like is rock music or techno.

No need to be defensive! I wasn't making any assumptions about your musical tastes. The point I was making is that certain genres would just seem wrong for the type of game Guild Wars is, therefore limiting the range of musical styles that could be utilised.
Quite, pastoral, Celtic-tinged music seems to work with the mood of the game, as it doesn't distract you when questing or interacting with other people. However, as I mentioned, context-sensitive music for battles etc. would be good, if done right. Most of the time, though, you want the music to be pleasant background music, not "in your face".

I don't listen to any GW music. I have my mp going on my computer the whole time. All of my favorite rock tunes, and techno/industrial seems to go well with the fighting.

Guns 'N Roses = Perfect in-town mission prep music.
In Flames = Perfect Galrath massacre tunes.

Perfect any-time music.
I don't really associate them with an in-town prep melody though.
Maybe Paradise City or something...

For some reason the whole Reroute to Remain CD just fits so well with random PvP arenas

I'd say the music could be improved significantly regardless of the theme - LOTR had the same style of music and its' soundtrack got people pumped up in the battles.

Wait, GW has music? Like a previous poster, I tend to tune it out for the most part; or, if not tune it out, it blends into the gameplay to the point where I don't notice it's there.
Seriously, though, I think I like GW's music how it is. I like the soft lilting Celtic-style tunage.

I like the music around Yak's Bend...
But, really, I usually don't even turn the comp sound on at all (things are going on IRL that sound more interesting )
