Sometimes I wish this was UT with swords. Or there was a UT w/Swords game. Then everyone could be happy =)

Skill? This game requires no skill.

No way..... I can't even begin to recount how many times I've been screwed out of a mission or bonus because of 'Any completely unspectacular human being, with a simpleton IQ'.

Farming for some people is a play-style. They don't do it because they feel they have to it. They do it because they enjoy it.
They don't farm because they feel they need the gold.
They don't farm because they feel they need the runes.
They don't farm because it isn't fun to them.
They do it because it's fun to them, they do it because they enjoy watching a group of mobs die at once. They do it because it's a thrill to have 12 different things beating on you.
You define farming as a grinding process.
Not everyone does.
This patch destroyed a play-style for those that liked to farm and did nothing for those that didn't like it.

So why do I all of the sudden see a million threads screaming, "OMG! SPENDING 900 HOURS FARMING ISN'T AS GOOD ANYMORE! GW SUCKS! ITS UT WITH SWORDS!"
Why did you BUY the game if all you wanted to do was grind? Go play Everquest.
|
are you already a lvl 20 competing in PvP with all the superior runes/vigors/elites/skills you want?

Hmm either I am missing something or your math is bit off. If you purchased 2 games at 50 a piece and he purchased a game at 80, you would only raise him 20.
What is the problem with people enjoying the game the way they want to? "If you wanna grind, go play WoW." Well, I don't remember anything saying "Push button and don't do anything to get your skills or items". Well I guess I am going to start saying, "You want it all in the beginning and don't want to grind, get and X-Box and play Halo 2 online."

Me too. My first response was going to be, "Box? What box? I bought it online."
But then I later decided I wanted the Physical Stuff. And I didn't want to get it wrong the *second* time, so of course I got the Collector's Edition.

Here's what I don't really understand. For players who like farming, what did ArenaNet change to prevent them from doing that?

Each player still has the option of running around any place and slaying monsters all day. They can even do the same place repeatedly, if they want. What's the problem?
To address the second part of your question, of COURSE it did something for players who don't like farming but DO want a fair battleground in PvP. The way ArenaNet has things set up currently, hardcore PvP players *do* need to play PvE to actually have a 100% fair fight (otherwise other players will have elite skills, etc. that they don't, if they never play PvE). Recent changes have obviously made it easier for the hardcore PvP players.

Actually those are exactly why they farm. You sound like you're a farmer. When was the last time you saw yourself smiling while farming? The only thing going through a farmer's head is "OMG MUST BE LEET MUST GOLD YUMMMMMM!!!!!! NEED TEH GODLY UBER ITEMS MUST BE LEET LEET LEET MUST WIN HOH MUST GET SIGIL LLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !ONEONE!!!!!!"
Well, maybe that's a bit exaggerated but you get the idea

First, I agree, if you like to gather items go ahead. Just like those that played Final Fantasy for hours in the same area just be be a huge experience level and could do the next few areas w/o too bad of a challenge. Its a play style, so that's cool. _AS LONG_ as it doesn't hurt me or the game. And if they want to sell the stuff they found then so be it, it can only help others by sharing the cool items (even at high cost).
People don't buy stuff from an item farmer if they don't feel the price is good. If a farmer sells a rune for 120K and someone buys it then that someone is happy to have bought it (although they may whine about the price, they obviously didn't care enough NOT to buy it. They probably just like whining).
I do disagree that GW has destroyed that aspect of the game. They've done nothing to make it that bad. I'm still playing, still getting nice equipment, still happy. If anything they may have adjusted game balances to fit everyone not just a single "style" of gaming. If GW changes such that you cannot enter the same area twice for n hours THEN you're looking at blatent destruction of a play style.
It should always come down to the question: "How does one play style ruin the game for another?" if you cannot come up with a clear obvious answer then there is no problem and no need for a fix.
I do feel that some folks like farming for items because it requires less challenge (and risk of death). People that fight in areas they can obviously win are never in fear of dying, and a challenge. So they do not progress further in the game because "it would be hard, and stressful." But that's just my opinion of some of the folks that constantly nail up the same area (esp. as the best drops seem to be as you progress further). FWIW: THere is _no good reason_ to be level 15 and still be in pre-searing Now that's an experience hoarder.
CodeMonkey,
PS: Another popular game style: hoarding everything you find and never selling anything. A buddy of mine does that in all RPG style games. If he had GW he would have 250 of every silly item that can stack

On the topic of hording: i never sell to players, only vendors. I blocked the Trade channel within 2 days of buying the game and see no reason to unblock it. Commerce in this game is a irritating to no end. I have, however, been known to give people weapon upgrades that I can't use, since they're only worth 25 gold.
chowdah, there's a game made on the Unreal (old one) engine called Rune that's a FPS style game with swords. There's also medieval mods for Unreal Tournament 2003/4 and Tribes 2, as well as Bushido (Samurai mod) in the works for Half Life 2.
Algren Cole, you raise a valid point! I don't have all the runes and skills I'd like, nor do I have a decent weapon. Now, considering that I DON'T enjoy killing the same groups over and over, should I be forced to farm for 100+ hours just to be on equal terms with the average PvP character?

i read the box.. it pretty, much better than the box for DOOM3!!
btw, i got a first bad experience with runes, i got a mastery of hammer rune for warrior but i forget it has a -50 health on it, so i put it on my armor and when charr hunting (actually doing the quest for the ash) and i got slaughter!!
next time, i'll watch out when i buy a rune next time!

Rune was a great game. Only game you can run up to someone and take off both they're limbs and continue fighting them Or lose your head and fall to the ground. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt playing that game.
I started by only selling to vendors too, then I got addicted to trading. My guild passes many items to me and I trade them off or sell them for cash and give it to the guild members. Its another "play style" of the game, if its not your thing that's fine. I filter the local chat because it drives me nuts, and disable the trade only when I'm not looking to trade.
However trading is a second aspect to the game that I like. I go out and complete quests/missions for awhile then haggle to sell off my stuff. Its addicting, but I cannot tell you why. The joy of offloading tons of items, or buying runes for 50gp and selling them back for 400gp... its just a different type of challenge (to get the best prices). I have tons of cash that i don't know what to do with, but its like getting experience...just a different unit of measure.
