Like said before, the reward is keeping your party alive, especially during a difficult fight. Also the rare thanks or gratitude for healing is also part of it. Just knowing that I hold the party together, sometimes, during fights is a pretty good feeling. So getting paid for your profession, when others aren't, is not right.

I never bother to ask for "compensation" I chose monk because it's a fun and challenging class to play.

I'd leave/punt/laugh at ANY class that asked for money to do a group quest, if you need them to do you a favour, then sure.

monks are not in demand because everyone in there god given mind has 1. Every member of my guild has a variation of a monk. They shouldn't be paid imho ... but thats just my opinion.
However, the actual *job* of servicing yourself as a mercenary is deeper than you touch here. There is no fishing, no mining, no nothing, so someone who found a job as a mercenary for hire ... well ... is just trying a different aspect. I don't necessarily agree with it ... but thats how it goes. As long as there is a demand for it, you'll always have people running people to droknars, running people to the ascention quests, you name it.
Thats not my idea of fun, but some people really dont have anything else to do at this point. I dont do it ... but then again I got a good guild.

i'd refuse payment on my monk. I play the class coz i enjoy it and i want to be good at it. Not to mention you'd immediately get all sorts of people making monks simply for easy cash, or you'd get people who are rubbish at keeping you alive, then if you don't pay them, guess what? You got griefers on your hands.
to my mind it should be as it is in Sacred; i.e. you help people out by giving them items that you get which are of more use to them, and people will remember that and give you things that are of use to you. or even better yet; you are given the gift of actually playing in a team that is fun and can work together.
now i can understand a bit more if people get paid to show others where certain towns and outposts are.

Hey Pevil!
*huggies*
Awesome seeing you here dudette!
I agree too ...It'd be better if we didn't have to pay...over all, I think it'd make fer a better feel...and karma tends to travel..
BUT...
...I"m thinkin this is a complicated guestion...and that it's not as easy as calling a monk a mercenary...but instead...this could be about the relationship between monks in the past and how they were treated by their team mates.
So...if we weren't to accede to a rising demand from monks for money...my question would now be...
How do we reward MOnks for seemingly thankless work that is absolutely necessary?
What language can we use while in a party to show apprecation for this class while also telling them that we need healing?
lol, sounds like we need a HOw to Show Yer MOnk I Love You Guide...
Anyone?

lol well its true, monks get more abuse than anything (though i've been lucky so far, found someone that was a good teamworker to do a few missions with).
sure there needs to be some love shown to monks, but if a monk is actually charging... well its not really love. people will pay it just coz people are under the impression that without a monk you'll die within 2 seconds no matter where you are. Whereas if you happen to just reward them at the end coz you enjoyed it/they were good... well so be it. and that goes for all classes, including us poor rangers that no one likes simply coz you dont SEE our arrows!

i think the idea of paying someone for their services is ridiculous. but it's their choice to pay someone for help, guiding, or whatever. but as for monks asking money to provide their services to a group is outright wrong. in my opinion, if these particular "hire for service" monks continue to abuse this, i think ArenaNet should see it as a form of exploit. they should make the hench monks more powerful such as more HP, stronger armor, and more mana. this way, more groups are willing to bring a monk hench in latter missions as this is where these "hire for service" monks start to appear.

A monk asking for payment is just "sad". also those monks who (ive heard from other posts) stop in a the middle of a mission and ask for payment to continue, and if arent paid, will leave....if that happened...*goes into the ignore list...
id pick "mhenlo/lina" over any money-hungry monks any day. somtimes not all human monks are reliable.
(with all this talk of a monk shortage -- i have a smiter atm and it's pretty fun to solo actually.)

all profs have SOME self-healing abilities, several have a few spells to heal others (ie healing spring, well of blood). granted these aren't as effective as having a full-time healer in your group, but i am so sick of people saying, "OMG liek we only have 1 munk we r so gunna die!!!11! i have leik no skill in my own prof!!!11!" having 2+ monks in your party at all times is a luxury.
that said, i think it is just plain stupid for monks to ask for payment or people to offer payment to monks or any other prof for that matter for completing task X *coughlornarspasscough*
it is almost impossible to guarantee payment or that your mercenary will not just up and leave after their down payment is given. why add unnecessary distrust and hostility to the game?

If people are willing to pay monks for their services, fine.
I personally don't pay them.
