Greed is the primary human motivator. Take away people's ability to satisfy their greed, and they stop caring. Greed, as far as the economy is concerned, needs to be encouraged.

Well said, Gecko.
Honestly, how many problems would some type of auction house or centralized trading system solve? Of course it takes some measure of development but add up all the time that's been spent on these "fixes" (quotes, dwarven ale, added traders, etc) and you quickly realize that time could have been better spent developing a major trading interface. Especially in light of the fact that all of these "fixes" have either failed miserably or have serious drawbacks.
Either you've got time to do it right, or you've got time to do it over again. Only problem is ANet keeps making the same mistakes.

People need to stop suggesting an auction house. It can't be done in an instanced game. You can't have more that 50 people in one spot at one time in this game... that includes their stuff. There's tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people playing this game. You simply couldn't make an action house work. You might as well be asking them to make the entire world persistant. It's not going to happen. If they wanted a world where 50,000 people could meet and trade items, they'd have made one. Instead, they designed a game without a need to trade items, nor a need to accumulate gold. People playing this game like a traditional MMORPG are disappointed, and rightfully so. This isn't a traditional MMORPG. Gold is worthless, items are worthless, runes and item mods are worthless. People's perception is that these things should have value, when actually they don't.

Perhaps an ANet sponsored auction site and perhaps some sort of "ding" against a player's account if they either:
a) don't follow through on payment;
or
b) don't follow through after payment by turning over the item.
After a certain number of 'dings' things begin to happen, similar to what would happen to a scammer or griefer.

From another thread
Quote:
a friend and I talked about this briefly...and the only conclusion we came to was an market place outpost. You the seller go to the outpost and place your items with one of the "vendors"...depending on the type of item. You then set the price you are willing to take for the item and leave. The vendor keeps record of your item and your price as well as your name and online status(name is not viewable to the buyer). The buyer either buys the weapon/item for the price you have set it at OR he sends you an anonymous whisper with an offer. You can either accept or reject the offer from wherever you are in the game. Once your items have been sold you return to the marketplace...walk up to the vendor and withdraw your funds(leaving behind a marginal fee for the vendors services).

EDIT ***** to the guy who said it can't be done. ffxi proves you wrong. Through not only japan, korea, and all over the world ... but through multiple platforms as well. 50,000 ... no ... it's more like 750,000 on at a time with peak hours reaching about 2 million.

ROFLMAO!!!
Yeah the way I see it... Personally I enjoy the game... but things like the unbalanced economy really put me off. Will play GW till something better comes out... I may still buy the expansion when it comes out... or may just go back to playing some NeverWinter with friends while I wait.
