I could just imagine what would happen with a standard subscription MMORPG mindset:- Exp reqs are increased by a large margin.
- Skills are made more difficult to earn.
- Dying yields exp loss.
- Uber items that take months to get with hefty gamebreaking stat bonuses are created.
... And so on and so forth.
I love subscription free MMORPG's, and entirely free ones, because I can pick them up and put them down at leisure.
I don't have to pay $15 a month for a game I MIGHT want to play.
Instead, I could play some of one for part of the month, switch to another, and whatever I'm in the mood for without worrying about getting my money's worth.
And having played under the trial month of multiple MMORPG's, some of which were free to download, pay after reaching a certain level or timespan, or $50 to buy and 30 days trial, in addition to free ones, I'm well aware that regardless of what MMORPG you play, the quality of the people isn't all that different. Money =/= Maturity. There're plenty of bright, but broke, university students, and spoiled children out there.

Let's compare it to something... It's like buying a Tennis racket and ball, then paying a monthly fee to rent the court, you're pretty much garuanteed usage unless there's a court downtime.
|
Then let's compare this to the reality of WoW vs GW- GW has been much more stable with less downtimes, doesn't have long queues for playing a lot of the content, etc that WoW has. There might not be quite as many people online in GW as WoW, but it has more than many MMORPG's, and you have the advantage of being able to play with anyone- not separated out onto different severs. What benefit is this $12/month providing again?
If I pay a monthly fee to rent a tennis court, I should be able to play tennis there, any way I want, whenever I want. When paying a monthly fee for most MMORPG's, I rather get to spend 15 minutes travelling to where I want to go, 30 minutes waiting to have a turn to do it, and have it spoiled 5 minutes in by some idiot, at which point, I get to go back and wait all over again.
MMORPG's with monthly fees are cash-cows for game companies- they bring in a LOT more money than the actual expenses are. GW has no need for a monthly fee, and has attracted a large portion of it's playerbase simply for that reason. A monthly fee would hurt GW, especially after saying they won't charge montly fees for it.

The question might have been hypothetical but this dead horse has been flogged so much there isn`t a dead horse left. ANY search should have brought up numerous threads that go just like this one. For the love of God, PLEASE, no more thread like this until Anet makes some kind of mention of a fee. I knew there`s was no fee a year before the game came out.

Guild Wars isn't good enough to pay a monthly fee for. Single player game thats only playable in multiplayer mode. The game is barely worth the $50 let alone a monthly fee ~_~. Even if I wanted to I couldn't pay a monthly fee (unless they accept Money Orders :P).
EDIT.
You know what! GW is actually good, I was reading a post 2 above mine and agreed with everything he said. I've played GW for about 2 months now, and only experienced 1 error where it kicked me and I was able to get back on in less than a minute. I remember playing Ragnarok where downtimes were constent, for upgrades and sometimes it was down for no reason at all. Maybe that's what made be bitter, which made me angry and the mere question of having to pay a monthly fee. PS If your wondering how I paid for Ragnarok, I used website where I could send them a money order and they paid for Ragnarok. Of course it was alittle bit more pricey than a credit card and took alonger time but it did work.

There are better games out there to pay a monthly fee for. There are even some better RPG games that are free.

I agree that this game isn't worth a monthly fee because it plays like a single player game for me. GW really has none of the things that make this a MMORPG that warrants a monthly charge. That's not to say its good or bad, it's just not worth it.
I experience more of a community in these forums than I do in GW....group hug.

This horse is finally down to bones...there is no more to flog.
As stated above, there has been NO indication or hint that ANet has any plans to charge a monthly fee for GW. They have said they will not charge a fee to play. Let us keep our hope in their honesty in advertising.
