Black dye was over 3,000g to buy at the Dye Trader last time I looked. That's ridiculous, especially for something which is practically useless. Isn't there any way of getting those prices down? I don't particularly care, as if I ever wanted any I'd just wait until I found some, but I know some people like the stuff but there's no way many people can afford that kind of money.

I found my first black dye, I would have gladly sold it to a character, but noone would offer close to the 2.8k the dye trader offered so I ended up selling to the trader...

I just checked it 1 min ago. It is 3,163. If it was 900 like you said I would've bought all I could. Never seen it that low...

In all fairness, the first post of the thread is dated '04-29-2005' . I doubt anyone had any idea it would get as ridiculous as it is now back then...

I had no idea, if I had any hint, I'd have bought about six or ten of them, held them for a few months, cashed in the first sign of it going to 4.5k per black.
I can't believe how its just gone up and up and up, and silver is starting to look like it MIGHT pull that trend, but as I found five or six silver in a few hours time not long ago, maybe not. For awihle purple and red were easy grabs then silver seemed it. Funny how you seem to just hit the dyes at certain spots.

3,750 gold for black dye as of today.
Incredible, huh? A good lesson in "supply side economics", for sure . Talk about your speculative investments paying off.
Just wait till the theory of inflation comes to pass soon, where there is so much gold floating around and few gold sinks, that prices in general will become silly high.
Anywho... I can see why the price just gets higher and higher. Once you ascend and beyond, and once you get your armor and weapons to what you want... there really are no money sinks, and even twinking an alt is not very cash consuming. Once you reach fire island and the underworlds and beyond, money and drops come at an incredible rate... what else you gonna spend it on?
I think this is why the need to add in casino type games, run by NPCs and the game itself, so people can get rid of the extra cash out there.

The thing about the dye market is that players aren't setting the prices directly. With the recent sigil problem (not flaming here just using for comparison) it was player on both sides (buyers and sellers) that drove the price up to 100k per. The sigil trader wasn't doing anything but taking up space in the game.
With the dyes, the players are driving up the price of black right now because either they get used as soon as they are found or hoarded for one reason or another. This leave an extremely limited supply. I'm not sure about the dynamics of the the trader AI, but if they only have 1 black to sell, they are going to milk it like any other seller would.
I wouldn't be surpirsed though with the continuing scarcity of black, that we'll be seeing silver becoming the new black unless the devs tweak the drop rates

*thinks back to day one about 20 min after I loaded the game onto my computer when I got a black dye drop and immediately applied it to chest armor - it looked cool for about the next 5 hours until I upgraded the armor. DOH!! Guess the first time doing anything new you are bound to do something stupid.*

This thread is months and months old... but I thought some of you might like to see (or be reminded) of the degree of inflation involved here. Also, it's worth noting that not too many are found to complain of black being 4-5K plus... which means that in the end maybe inflation doesn't really matter... who knows

I laughed when I read this. You can't even buy it (via dye trader) at the moment. The economy is going nuts (my opinion). I'm no economist so I'm not going to point fingers and put blame here and there (but I do think Mo/W tank builds should be nerfed, sorry...I didn't spend so many freakin' hours on my warrior to be outdone by a healer).
But yeah, last time I saw it (a few days ago, before I did a 2 hour FoW crafter run) it was about 18K. Then I went to Ascalon to sell some crap to the merch, and noticed there was no black dye left. I heard it went as low as 1K...but just going from 18K to *possibly 1K* to none (which would make sense if it dropped to 1K) available in about 2 hours...is crazy...
So the question is, as far as black dye...how the hell (if it's true) did it go from 18K to 1K? So quickly I might add.

when i logged on in wpe, it was one of the first things i bought.
see picture:
it makes me sad that i can't even customize my characters in my favorite color. it makes no sense that an item dye would be worth more than the item itself due to a flawed game mechanic. i hope they will fix this in the future.

that the dye is so valuable makes sense though... it's very rare and in high demand
I'm sure if we thought about it we could find several examples of real life items where the upgrade component is far more expensive than the host item (witness rednecks with a 300 dollar crapmobile and a 2000 dollar stereo system)

In that amount of time, I can have as many chicks as you can have black dyes. Which would you prefer?
GW is starting to cater less and less to us poor casual gamers.

Yea, they really need to do something about it. I'm not a casual gamer but I'm defiantly not a hardcore gamer either. It's ridiculous that in 4 months the game has lost one of it's unique features and probably by the end of the year it will almost be just a regular MMOG.
