Default Jump in, Jump out guildes and scammers

I met some guy that was looking for a clan today, I talked to him for a bit and he said he wouldn't leave unless somebody was mean to him, blah, blah, blah. So I grouped him in and we talked for a bit and me, on my female avatared Monk, he puts 3 Red+Purple pink dyes in the trade window and says "You wouldn't happen to want to buy these?"

Well, I know that real pink dye looks brighter than the Red+Purple mix which has a rougey purplish color on the bottle. The guy said he needed 14,500 gold for his 3rd piece of fissure armor, so I say "Alright, I'll buy them for 5k each"

He thanks me and we talk for a bit and he goes on and on about how he wouln't leave and hes a loyal player blah blah. He asks me for 50 iron ingots and pays 500 for them.

Latter on I log in and the guy goes "Meet me in la dis 5" I come there and the guy hands me 50 iron. I say "Thanks but I don't really need iron unless I'm giving it to a guild mate", "That's ok now we're even" he says, I respond "What? You paid fair market value for the iron", He says "I mean for the pink dye. I bought red dye from the trader for 500"

Me: "Ok, thanks" then check the list of active guildies to find that hes not on the list. I whisper him and hes still online,
Me:"Eh? Why'de you leave the guild"
Him:"We're even now right?"
Me:"Who cares? Why did you leave the guild?"
Him:"We're even"
Me:"Whatever, why did you leave the guild?"
Him:"I love this guild"
Me: "What guild?"
Him: "I didn't steal from you"
Me: "What guild are you talking about?"
Him"We're even"
Me: "No, I asked you what guild that it is you love."
Him:"Oh. Cho's guild"
Me:"Well why did you join it?
Him "I like this guild. See, Cho was offline when you asked me and I really like Cho and Cho's Guild."
Me: "Why did you say that you would never leave unless someone offended you?"
Him: "I didn't steal from you, did I?"
Me: "No, you didn't steal from me. I just paid insanely high prices for worthless dye I could have bought at the trader for 600 gold"
Me: "And you told me that you wouldn't leave unless someone provoked you to"
Him: "Oh" -4 minute pause- "yeah someone was mean to me"
*Ignor*
Oh please, the only people logged in, in the whole time between then and when I recruited them were a guy whose usually soloing UW (Or hes AFK), the Guild leader (Shese never spouted off screaming at random strangers in the one month I've known her) and a guy that's level 14.

Oh come on, what is this? Some new kind of scam? Leave your guild, advertise in high level areas for a new one, gain the recruiter's trust and then get them to pay for your 15k armor, leave and rejoin your old guild?

I find this disheartening and plain stupid. The guy who was talking to me at the end didn't even sound like at all the person i had just recruited earlier in the day. Do they bot scammers now?

This guy probably talked to me for the first 50 seconds, saw that I used alot of emotes and was a female monk and then thought "I know! T3h chik must like pink!!", he scrambles up 3 semi-pink dye and later says "Want to buy these?"

So yeah, I waste the value of an ecto and a black dye on this guy and his maroon dye that I purpossly paid high prices for just so he can get more, prettier armor.

Here's a screen of me talking to him, I cought the tail end of the conversation. Note: Do not stand around LA after something stupid happens to you http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/Mrbic7/Roy.jpg

Has anyone else faced anything similar to this? I mean really, you try to do something nice for someone and they have to grief :\

Never had it happen to me, but I gave 3K and a whole bunch of materials to a guildie who'd only been with us for a couple of weeks or so, i'd be kinda sore if he left after that...

I guess the lesson is to make people earn your trust, rather than just being trusting in nature. If the guy wanted his 15K armour then get him to sell you something worthwhile rather than practically gifting him the money... it's a shame, but there are greifers out there.

dont be nice to guildies just cause their guildies. And dont be non-nice to people just cause they're not guildies. Be nice to people you like, whether they're guildmates or not. Then you'll never feel ripped off.

I ran that idea by my guild, and they all were afraid it would basically stop newcomers. Considering we have 70 members, I didn't think it mattered...

I'd ask whyl they need fissure armor. They don't need fissure armor, they can earn it themselves, especially if they are new to the guild. An established guildie, I'd fork over the cash with no worries - but someone who just joined? Heeeeeell No. Sorry if that didn't help. General advice to folks: Don't give large sums of cash to people who haven't been with you a while and have no valid reason for wanting it.

One thing I've seen done is that new members are given a 'task' to complete....like collect something or bring in xgp or something like that. The best new members get is mid-levelish stuff and 10k or so. That's it until they've proven their longevity.

Ah well...lessons learned, right?

This is a prime example of lack of a guild recruit phase. I'm a member of Team HAF and whether you play Guild Wars or BF2 there is a recruit phase, where you will play with us for a couple of weeks then the leaders will decide whether you are the kind of person that would mesh with the clan/guild. Their are several advantages to this.

1. Scammers trying to get handouts will be detracted due to the fact that trust isn't quickly earned.

2. You find out if that person meshes with your guild

3.The recruit learns wether he/she meshes with your guild

I'm not saying you shouldn't help recruits but give them a week or 2 before you start handing out hundreds of platinum.

A recruitment phase is an excellent way to help counter-scamming, and it creates more dedicated members.

Usually I do missions with people that I knewly recruit, but for this guy I had to go within the hour and he had already given me firm basis to that he wouldn't leave, at least I thought so after being awake for 9 hours and 20 before that.

Sleep helps you not get scammed O.O

LOL. When recruiting for my guild, I always get one person who joins, then immediatly asks "Do you have anything Uber that I can have?" If they really have to ask like that, they're noobs, and they get a prompt "No, sorry, but this isn't the Salvation Army." And then of course, they threaten to leave. Which saves me the effort of kicking them.

IDK, I don't really think its that great of an idea to give free stuff to people like that. Of course, I'm not rich. Come on...is it really worth 15k to get a new guild member? I've had great members join with me for FREE.

Tough break, and an odd story at that. I'd be happy to donate some of your lost funds back to you if you need it as one forum member to another. Afterall, I'm only saving up for FoW armour anyway so I don't really need my money that badly.

It's situations that like that I have left me reluctant to recruit anyone. Heck, I only have one other member who I recruited last week and I founded my guild back in April. Guess the old saying is true, actions speak louder than words and this person's actions proved that.

Never trust people that swear "I'm honest!" .

An official or unofficial trials phase would help to see if the person stays, and what kind of person it is.

Hate to say this, Sagius, but while I sympathise (I really do), shouldn't it have been the guild leader who uses the sigil for the guild hall? After all, in the entire guild, he/she is going to be the last person to quit the whole thing, right?

As for guildies asking for stuff as soon as they join, for any reason, it's a shortcut to riches, and if that's all their game is, you should see it a mile off. If I had a new guildie join then ask for even a 100g loan, I would consider why they don't just go out there and farm for it if they want it. If they can't be bothered to do even that, then they have nothing to offer, and no place in the guild. Simple. If they're after the Fissure Armour, same thing applies. We'd be happy to help them through the FoW, but that's the limit of it.

Saying that, there are still donations between guild members. I've donated gold and rare items to other guildies simply because I don't need/use the item. (It beats standing in LA for hours repeatedly spamming WTS...WTS....WTS), and in return, they've donated back to me. However, our guild, with a few exceptions, is mostly made up of friends who know eachother long before we got onto GW. As for the rest, I'm not fussed if I trust them or not. If I donate somethiung to them and they leave the guild, well, that was my own decision. If I need/want to keep something, I simply won't donate it, and I wouldn't expect others to do it otherwise.

I can't fathom meeting someone one time and inviting them to the guild. And then spending that kind of gold for something you do not want. I say it is a lesson learned about how to deal with new guildmates.

Within our guild, if we have something that one of our mates may want or need, we ask them if they want it. They pay for it, but at a very significant discount, or we just give it to them. But everyone in our guild is also at least 25 yrs old or more and have been in Iron Rangers for many months/years in other games (SWG, EQ2, WoW, BF42). Which means more mature, and trust worthy.

I agree completely with this dude. I have to know the guildie is good for it before I give him the money.

firstly whether he needs fissure armor or not is not the problem of the guild. The guild CAN ... help with missions, quests, group in team arenas, tombs, and show him HOW to make money , they can be services ie. running power levelling you name it ... but i would never fork over straight cash to some random one night stand. Until they have the trust they may be lucky to get a few useless items from me for free (just cause I need the inventory space and even then they are fighting the competative merchant prices)

luxuries like fissure armor, 15K armor, etc, are not the responsibilities of the guild, they are suppose to be acquired by yourself as an accomplishment through your travels. The armor will be there in 2 weeks, 2 months, heck even likely 2 years if GW can stay up that long.

egad.

With new members I often give them really nice equipment (the best I can find/buy) - but I've never been taken advantage of like that before.

Come to think of it, once someone did try. They joined and, the first thing they did was ask for 10k. Only because he had an awkward vibe about him I said, "I won't give you 10k, but if you have a few minutes I'll show you how to farm. Give a man/woman a fish and you feed him/her for a day, but teach him/her to fish and you've fed him/her for life." Funny thing is - all of a sudden he didn't "have time" for learning to farm. He's not with us any longer.
