So if you can and do play like mad for 72 hours straight next weekend you can get the grind done instead of doing it over 360 hours normal.

Hmm, everyone says they'll make a smurf guild and farm faction? If memory serves, when you challenge a specific guild, you enter into an unranked gvg. You DON'T get faction for unranked, or did I miss something?

Update – Wednesday, June 29
New Guild Wars PvP Reward System:
This week we're implementing a new reward system for Player vs. Player (PvP) combat. When playing in cooperative missions and in explorable areas, you will continue to earn normal experience. But when fighting in Arenas, Tournament, and Guild Battles, you will gain faction with Balthazar, the god of war, instead. Faction is shared by all characters on your account and is awarded for kills and for winning battles. Faction can be redeemed to unlock runes, weapon upgrades, and skills, which then become accessible by any new PvP Only Characters for your account.
The rate at which you gain faction will vary depending on your success and the type of PvP. The high-level arenas provide faction faster than the low level arenas. The Tournament provides faction faster than the Arenas. Because Guild Battles require the greatest amount of organization, they provide the greatest rewards. Faction rewards for guild battle victories increase with higher guild rating. Nevertheless, for all types of PvP, even if you are not victorious, you will gain faction for every enemy your team kills. (Please note: To prevent organized faction-farming, only automatic-match, rated guild battles provide faction. Also, characters who have been in a guild for less than two weeks do not gain full faction for a victory.)

Im not one to complain since i have very few bad things to say about GW in general. For the most part, i come home from work and play a few hours .But i am a pve'r mostly.I enjoy the random parties(when everyone doesnt quit or draw their favorite playtoy on the minimap).I dont mind the grind if you call it that(I was one of the peeps in the early days of release who just couldnt understand, and still dont , the thrill of Running to the next area.I am an explorer and a enjoyer and i think the game is one of the most beautiful and escapist games i have ever been a part of.Kudos, to the GW devs and testers. But, again , i am a pve'r(old school...I caught the babel fish in my ear and died by gru many times) and i feel that making the game easier is gonna kill it.Underworld and FOW should be the places of legend that only the few have mapped. Now those areas are raped daily by potty mouth lil kids looking for their Stone Of Jordans.Hopefully in the new updates they take the time to realize that they cant put out updates every 5 mo's(or can they?)..Make the game harder and the complainers will all try harder or leave, But if it is hard they will keep taking it off the shelf to try.As for pvp, i would like to try but i am not very good and all i get are flames and insults for it.At least in Counterstrike peeps would help me at times and at that game i own.(or think i do)...I would like to try this weekend but alas...i work for a living and thats 12 hour night shifts at that so i miss an event.Enjoy (sry bout the rant) and have fun this weekend pvp'ers....just dont forget about the explorers and the perfectionists....love Quk

I think it's great that we're getting a global event like this to encourage more low levels into the LA arenas (heh heh, guess where my necro will be) and more people to PvP generally.
Hopefully, however, this is to test what effect increasing the faction rewards by this much has, and will allow them to tweak them permanently soon. As it is, we need to get 91 consecutive, perfect victories where no enemy logs out before dieing in the competition or team arenas to get 2000 faction, a sensible amount to use for calculations, as it is what is needed to get a few skills or a sup rune or a perfect upgrade from nothing. With a 5x multiplier on the faction, it drops to 19 consecutive, perfect wins, where you have 50 spare at the end (naturally, 4 of them don't need to be consecutive, and this will cope with a total of 5 non perfect and logged out enemy wins).

Nono, lets make it a 3-day thing with 5x faction, and then lets call it extreme. It's alright, we'll just send our slave monkey (Gaile) out to the forums, to defend our shitty decisions. She'll surely prevent the fanboys from seeing how little we do, and how little we care.

Shinsei, that has honestly got to be the biggest pile that I have ever read in this forum. Thanks for setting a new record.
I don't think you even believe what you are writing, that is just obvious trolling imo.

And the timing? It's not like everyone planned to go away this weekend, or are going to play nonstop 3-day GW marathons. (I hope for their sakes...) A person could just pop on, play some RA, then quit. It's not the end of the world if they miss this XTREME event. Who knows, all the changes could be permanent. Perhaps you're missing out on it?
|
Where did I complain about balance changes? I haven't even seen the planned balance changes yet, and I won't complain about them untill I've seen them and see possible mistakes. And they already have alpha for testing balances, except they kicked out everyone that actually care about PvP balance.
If the changes were supposed to be permanent, why would they make a specific weekend for it and not just say "these are the changes we will make, and they will stick untill further notice."?
And yes, you're right, playing 3 days GW-Marathons or miss the event won't matter much, because to be quite honest, these changes are not a huge improvement in faction rewards. Certainly not worth spending time on over some other things I can do.
And to everyone saying "this is probably a way to test faction gain":
Why do they need to test faction increase? Surely if they had a client-program to 'test' faction gain, they would be using it to balance the faction gain right now? How does increased faction give you a better data to compare the rate of unlocking to?

What's wrong with having a friendly admin from the game you play, explain it on a FAN forum, to your kind of people that are unappreciative and criticizing.
What more do you want, FREE faction for posting?
You don't have to like every update that comes, but to criticize BEFORE IT IS RELEASED is taking it over the top. The name doesn't matter, the content does. It is like if you bought a pizza for five dollars and tastes good but you read the name of it on the box and it is "hgggdnvjlugfhglfd".
Increasing the faction permanently is not a great solution, because they need to test it to see if the increased faction will screw over the unlocking process. In short, they have to make it so there is actually a balance of PvE unlock and PvP unlock. And 100 hours for unlocking everything is a bit low, don't you think?
P.S. Thank you ArenaNet for listening and implementing balance changes.

While I agree with the basic premise that 100 hours of play should open up everything for serious competitive play, this type of reaction isn't hardly necessary. GW remains one of the greatest games I've played (PvE and PvP are fun) and the people who made it (and continue to attempt improvements) deserve a certain level of respect. It IS only a game.

does this mean low random arenas (ex. Yaks Bend) get a slight increase too? albeit a lower one than that of higher competitve arenas?

I think this is great news and am looking forward to alot of GvG and random arena this weekend. If you're a PvE'er you might try the random arena, it's alot different from the team arena you get in quick, have fun, and you're far more likely to see GG at the end of a match than just, "wow you guys really suck" (I thought I'd just try out some different builds in the team arena, big mistake...)
Of course if anet really wants people to try out PvP this weekend, an obvious carrot would be to expand the number of character slots from 4 to 6 or allow people to have a dedicated PvP char slot so they don't have to delete/heavily modify a PvE character to try it out.

I was half-asleep last night when I went to shut off my comp and then decided to check the GW site. For a split sec I thought the Summer Update or something was going on, but instead it was some kinda PVP dealie. Ho hum, not something I'm interested in. However, we are getting a Summer update soon and I don't think theres anything wrong with the PVP peepers getting an Extreme Weekend jobby. Hopefully they will have a good time when it happens. I don't have much to complain about in GW as I feel the game paid for itself when I walked into Pockmark Flats the first time. Obviously the game could use some improvements and additional content but I got my $50 worth already and any xtra stuff they add is a bonus. Have fun with the PvP extreme weekend PvP peepers, I'm off to get a beer and lurk around the Crystal Desert.

Not to mention, making the metric 'time to unlock all' is a rather stupid way to measure the gain of the faction system. A more reasonable metric would be measuring the amount of time it takes to earn the faction for a totally new build. So maybe figure seven normal skills + one elite, and maybe a rune series thrown in. Then base faction gain off the resulting figure. Many skills in GW are more or less garbage, and so there is little need to unlock them period.
