Yep. You can't make it if you start this game now. Unless you play hardcore. I play casual, but I've been playing since the day the game came out ( and beta ) so I have enough skills/rank to get in good groups.

I'd tell you to stop, but thats mean so I'll just say I agree with you.

Several ppl with high ranks have just been lucky enough to get into groups capable of compensating for their lack of skill. But I have seen ppl below rank 6, hell, some with no rank at all, who absolutely dominated in PvP. High rank =/= skill. It always, always, ALWAYS depends on the person, not the numbers. Also, for anyone that believes time played matters, its not the quantity of practice, its the quality. 2 hours of good practice > 20 hours of bad practice.
And just so I dont get flamed, I realize that yes, there are people with a high rank that are good, I'm just clarifying that not all high ranked ppl are good. It's almost like saying a lvl 3 that got ran to Droknar's is good cause he has forge armor. You just can never tell if someone is good or not until you've played with them yourself. Also, to stay on topic, yes, casual players can be good at PvP, some ppl just have natural talent for it, which is very hard to beat w/o a TON of experience. (not character xp, the player's experience) Thats all I have to say for now....wow, and I complain about 1 paragraph essays in english. Too bad they aren't about games, eh? lol
A level 3 can't get Forge armor. Or do you mean Droknar's Armor? Not Fissure....

for some people, it's not (and never will be) about being a "professional" and/or "full-timer" at PvP.........real life just will not ever allow it.

for some people like me, it will always be just about having fun, meeting new people, being challenged, and kicking some virtual arse. We simply can't invest the time that others can to get to rank 6 or higher.

I can only hope that someday, if I hop into Tombs, and yell out "PvP noob LFG with other PvP noobs....." that someone may answer, and we can have some fun.....

........even if we get OUR arse kicked!

The people I know dont care about what rank you are, or how long youve been playing, as long as you are willing to listen they will play with you.

it would appear the only logical conclusion to your statement here is that the "rank 7" and "rank 8" players you are are talking about did not really have that rank at all. either they just lied about their rank and no one checked their emotes, or their little kid brother were using their accounts. or something like that.

those who say that rank does not indicate skill are a perpetuating a very bogus idea.

Not entirely true. There is a learning curve to everything and most learning curves tell you that very experienced people can't get much better at what they do even if they put in extreme amounts of practicing time. This does mean that a new player CAN become pretty much as good as the best players out there.

Also, some experienced players get tired of the game and quit. There will always be a chance for new players to climb on the top of ranks if they so desire.

I was going to say "you're right, casual players can't do well in PvP", but it's not the whole truth.

The thing is, RANDOM GROUPS, which is what most casual players play, can't do well in PvP, not consistently.
A well-organised team of casual players with teamspeak and good builds COULD do well, consistently.

But then again, even if they won every match they ever played but only played for one hour per week - is that "doing well"?

The simple fact of the matter is that if you want to be at the top, you need to practice a lot and play a lot. It is true of all sports, INCLUDING chess.

PUGs can't communicate....PUGs i've been on that had a voice server actually did fairly well. They aren't by any means going to hold the hall(the average PUG)...but it was still an enjoyable experience.

The fact that this game REQUIRES a voice server is rediculous. Counter Strike(just an example) was released 7 years ago(?? roughly)....and support ingame VoIP...In my opinion this is just yet another thing ArenaNet failed to deliver.

I'll show you wrong... I play this game barely 2 hours a day and I ascended 2 characters in a little under 3 months.

I KNOW the trends and the gimmicks in pve and pvp. Why? Cause I hang out here while in between gaming runs...

I get asked questions about augmenting W/N builds on a near-regular basis. And not just those, but I try to answer questions regarding any build. [but my w/n knowledge is probably one of the most specialized...]

For only 2hrs/day, I'm certainly better than any 24/7 grinder who doesn't know how to read in a civilized forum such as this......

you do realize that 2 hours a day is a significant amount of play time right?

yeah, 2 hours/day, 3 - 5 days a week, should be considered upper limit of casual. that's about what I play now.

when I played EQ hardcore I was putting in about 50~60 hours/week.

In other words, sure the leveling and farming are much shorter than in other games, but it still requires to put a lot of hours every week to do well in pvp.

Show me I am wrong and I will be happy.

It requires lots of grind though PVE side of the game on the other hamd PVP is not bad for casual gamer.I picked up fast when I first started out in beta making up different builds it was fun that is when there was unlocked all skills.I would suggest starting a PVE charctor but only going so far in the game then make up a PVP char. and start earning faction to unlock skill, runes and weapon up grades. You will find it better than sitting for hours grinding it through PVE.I don't mind PVE i just hate the missions and ascention.
