I believe an active account is one that has been registered and turned on, regardless of the amount of play time on that account.

"In fact, our statistics show that 50% of all active accounts have fewer than 10 platinum pieces, and 75% of all active accounts have fewer than 20 platinum pieces." -Mike O'Brian, GW head design team, from the above link.
I wonder if how many of those accounts either:
Don't get played anymore
Just started.
Does anyone that plays regularly, with a character or two that have completed the game, have less than 20 plat? Barring having just spent it, of course. I think that this whole "active account" thing that Anet likes to refer to is skewing all their numbers whenever they refer to it. I've seen them make references several times, and always end up scratching my head...

I agree it is a dubious statistic. Just speaking for myself, my account would have moved from the "under 10k" category to the "over 20k" group in just the last three days. One solid SF run netted me over 15k in goods. The same could potentially be said for many other of these accounts I'm sure. Just another example of that old adage: there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

I have money spikes, typically I'm broke because I'm trying to get 15k armor on all my characters and my friends characters, and multiple sets for a few of my characters...so the chance that they caught me with over 10k on my account is very low. I spend it too fast...

Yup. Three characters finshed the game, 600 or so hours logged, active every day pretty much, only about 10k to my name. But then again, I find that I spend it. Given that I own at least 2 different armours per PvE toon, 4 on one of them the money disappears pretty fast, plus I never farm or do UW runs.
