I actually had many issues with this before I found an excellant post:

If you check your spending, sell everything of worth and salvage, you can make a decent amount just doing missions and random quests.
A typical mission will yield 2k worth of stuff if you know how to salvage, what to sell and what to keep.
I got a crappy 12%dmg>50, 2:1vampiric, Marksmanship+1(12%) in one mission that wouldn't sell for 1k! I have Upgraded it to a 3:1 and a Health+20 upgrades I found/collect freely during my travels.
I sold it for 8k. <---Be aware that you must sell when you casually see WTBs not by spamming your wares.
Many of you would say: I never get those kinds of drops
Well I say: Neither do I.
It's random.
Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.
It's really just luck.
Those who *do* farm have big monetary ambitions and/or don't know how to check their spending and must farm because of it.
Keep your bank account in check and you'll be happy with what you have and doing what you want to do instead of farming.

farming for skills
Well, I've recently resorted to farming (and I have a wonderful farming spot that isn't well known). Why? I need experience for my next skill point. I've done all the missions/quests, and I'd like to unlock all skills across all 3 of my characters. As it turns out, I'm about 15 skill points short on one of my characters, and hence I farm. In about 1.5h or so I can get enough experience for a skill point... and typically the platinum I need to convert that skill point into a skill. A side effect of this farming spot is a good amount of major runes.... which I've already unlocked. So, I just give them to guild members.

That's exactly why I farm now. Well besides the griffon runs, which is just for fun, or kill like 10 min of time till a tomb spot is ready for me. I'm still scratching my head on a farming build w/ Me/Ne.

I guess looks are more important than function to most people, but they look cool too. for my first warrior i wanted stefans sword when i saw it. i liked the black mid-evil look to it, was happy to see that the collector sword was the same although they should change the long sword in droks to look similar since the axes all look alike

hehe. let's keep the drok crafter a secret. i only wish he had an equivalent of korvald's chakram. i think it's a sexy domination off-hand, but i don't feel like shelling out the money or farming for it.
and yeah, image does drive a lot of the power trading. if not for the look of the item itself, it's for the image of having a gold item with perfect stats. normally, this is fine. after all, i'm picky about looks too. if they have the money, why not spend it? the only time it becomes a problem is when new or casual gamers see these prices and start thinking that they need to be extremely rich in order to be effective.
