You're lucky then. By the time my ranger got to the later parts of the game, I usually had to hussle my own group, as you say. It sometimes could take a while though.
Sometimes I just feel lazy and didn't feel like hussling a group together tho.

All the more reason to institute a LFG interface, so people forming parties can see at a glance, who in the area is looking for what mission/quest or just standing around.

Because usually when I go AFK, I don't know how long I'll be. I don't plan to leave GW on for long periods of time when I'm AFK, but sometimes it happens.

I vote for the "log out" when you need to be AFK for more than a few minutes. Sheesh....why would you want to leave a char IG?

Sometimes people go afk for very short periods of time, like for a shower, or to grab something to eat. I like to keep guild chat on to see what I missed while I was gone when I afk, so I leave GW open.
Most of the time, I hang out in the Wizard's Hall, though. I just love how peaceful it is

How dare you mistake the Smite Mistress. Now you will fear the wrath of the SMITE KEY!
On-topic: While I personally don't see the point of staying logged in if you aren't doing anything, I don't see why they should be forced to log out. Although I would support some kind of auto logging function. For example, if you are inactive for say... 30 minutes, the program automatically logs you out.

We realize that the OP said he was chatting and no one has a problem with his actions. But there is the overall issue of people leaving characters in game, in mission areas, just standing around doing nothing for no reason, which makes it quite difficult to form a group sometimes.
Everyone has to go AFK now and then and sometimes you can be away longer than expected. But you can go to any mission in the game and find at least a dozen people just standing around doing nothing. Surely not all of them are just AFK for a second, but rather, just leaving their character in game for no reason.

Coming from a game where blind invites are taboo, I would suggest that people try whispering the person first, before inviting. That way, you get the "Away" notification or even an offline notification as a clear indicator that they're afk.

Is it right to dance? Not if your character is a male mesmer, that's just not right at all...

Here's a solution for you. Standing around (dancing around...whatever) load your party up with henchies, that way if someone tries to invite you they get the message that your party is full. Ta-da. Now you can dance, chat, leave, whatever with less people bugging you. (because some idiot is still going to whisper you telling you to leave your group and join theirs).

Yes, if I'm going AFK for a bit I'll tell my guild, but at the same time I don't want to miss anything. Plus, if I'm going to, say, make a sandwich and a drink, what's the point of logging out for less than a couple of minutes?
Anyhow, thanks for all your opinions. I understand that it could be annoying for people trying to form a group, but if people didn't blind invite all the time then we wouln't have this problem because they'd see that I was away when they whispered me.

I like that in WoW when you go AFK a <AFK> appears above your head. GW really needs this. As the only way to tell if a person is away is if you whisper them, and often most people dont' set their status to away when they go AFK.
I frequently get up and leave my character at /dance when I'm in a town, just so I can move around, get stuff to drink, to eat. But never more than 10 minutes.

Personally, after all the difficulties I have had with my ranger getting groups, I enjoy getting desperate invites from groups looking for monks when I am logged in with my monk. I think I might just leave my monk in Thunderhead dancing now when I know I will be afk. Hmmm, maybe I will whip up a macro to say "Monk looking for group" every minute or so.
Seriously, if someone doesnt accept your invite, move on, why waste your time? People get too pissy about these sorts of things. Its rather silly to assume that someone should respond to blind invites.

what a load of chips and beans!!!! STAY LOGGED ON!!!!
your character age goes up for one thing, AND if A-NET thought it was a bad idea to go afk forever and they would have done auto-log off.
Im logged on now, I've alt-tabbed to come onto the forums.. I guess I might be away on this site for ooo... 2/3 hours!... when I want to play again I simply re-open and instantly I can play, without having to type in my password again.
Im pretty damn sure guildwars guru would be quite please to know that people alt-tab, check out their site, then jump straight back into guildwars.
oh and by the way... the more times you type your password on your keyboard the more chance of it being keylogged...
staying logged on is clearly for the more enlightened.

There are a lot of people trying to make excuses in this thread. But what it comes down to is that a monk has just as much right to dance and go AFK anywhere as a warrior does. You didn't advertise yourself as LFG so you owe exactly nothing to anyone around you.
