Is it RIGHT to dance?
Excuse the strange title, but I was wondering if people here think that it's wrong to go AFK in a mission outpost? Sometimes I like to sit and watch the conversations people have or whatever, or sometimes I'm just not at the computer, so I set my character to /dance. I guess it doesn't help that I'm a Monk, but I was just in Thunderhead dancing and chatting with guildies (in the guild channel) and I started to get a lot of abuse from people about the fact that I was a Monk and not accepting invites.
If a Warrior went AFK, would people have a go at him/her?
I can understand the idea that people want Monks for their groups, but surely if I turn down an invite once or twice they'd get the message? I was questioned in general chat, and I explained that it was my right to be there, and that I could simply be waiting for my guildies to arrive. No one believed me, but whatever.
Anyway, I know this has been discussed before but I want a fresh view on it, because I feel slightly guilty for what I did (even though I know I shouldn't, since I wasn't doing it to be mean).
Thanks.

It's your right to be there, but being a monk in the later missions is a double edged sword. Easy to get a group, hard to simply hang out and/or get time to manage inventory.
If you want to be left alone - play a ranger.

That is unfortunate. Its because people are unaware of the power that a mes can bring. Because they are clueless, or they played a mes, and couldn't figure out how to play them. If making a party I try to bring 1 necro & 1 mes at least. Best groups I have had were, 2 monks, 1 mes, 1 necro, 1 ranger, 2 wars, and 1 ele. I have a necro that I refuse to delete because its so strong.
Just don't accept or reject. People will eventually get the idea that you are afk. Or if the start messaging you, appear offline in the friends list

yeah, pay them no mind at all. Your playing the game for your enjoyment and doing what you feel like doing. Next time someone gives you a hard time for standing around, go with them and let them all die and say "sorry, I was afk like before... and forgot my res"

Yep seen that before, it's like if you are in a district you NEED to join a group, just because you're a monk.
I've had a few insults by pm or in all chat, just because I didn't accept an invite. I find this really amusing and when it happens, I usually first tell them I do not accept blind invites (note most of the insults come from the people who do the blind invite thing).
When the insulting continues, I usually ask in all chat the reasons I should join a group of morons who are insulting me because I’m not solely at their service. I also like a previous post refer them to Alesia and Mhenlo actually enjoy blind invites and are pretty submissive, so they should fit their needs nicely.
And yea if you want peace, just run a NE/Me or vice versa, you’ll get to know those henches pretty well…

They also never ragequit in the middle of a mission screwing your team.
My mission team composition contains 4 more damage dealers, the hench healers and one real monk. This way our team doesnt get screwed to the point of having to restart if the monk err 7 or ragequits.

I remember the Hell's Precipice mission with pugs.. Monks! Monks everywhere and not a drop to drink!! They were everywhere, dancing! Not one of them wanted to come!
People still pug in PvE? Unless you want some company, why not just bring henchies?

There's the answer!
All joking aside, you paid for the game so play it how you want to. If they're being rude then pay them no mind.

Un-beleivable!!! LOL... people actually stoop so low to try get a monk on their team, that is pathetic.. in fact its hilarious!
I wouldnt feel guilty about that at all.... lol, in fact I would probably go up to them, /point /laugh
as for the dancing... well, I would MUCH rather sit and watch a monk dance being AFK than standing still being AFK.

Exactly.
And this guy who I PMed (told him to stop sending me blind invites) ended up saying that I was obviously there to annoy people, and that he didn't want a Monk like me on his team. What? The guy who's just insulted me doesn't want me on his team?
Right.

Two things:
1) Yes, I completely agree that monks have a right to stand around and do nothing in an outpost. If the monk doesn't say "LFG," frankly, you can deduce pretty darn well that that person isn't looking for a group at all. The later missions are very monk-scarce. In that case, I just take monk henches and announce that for my "LF more" messages (eg. Group with Monk henchies LF Necro and Warrior.). I'll weed out every idiot who'd rather wait an eternity for a monk to join than try the mission now and come back later. People who are decent at the game know that monk henchies only work as well as the group does.
2) I've played a ranger and mesmer before, I NEVER had trouble finding a group. When you see more than one "LFG" onscreen, you can usually invite those people instead of waiting for some random group to invite you; those people usually don't leave. Don't be lazy; take a little initiative, and you'll find that making a group only takes one or two minutes and not a lifetime.
So yes, dance away. Blind invites never work, and only desperate idiots invite blindly. I'd say those group deserve what's coming to them if you're considering joining then afk'ing.
Sometimes I just stand around Thunderhead Keep and Ring of Fire outposts watching the "GLF MONKS!!!!" messages over and over.

oh I dont know about blind invite being so dumb... I do like to help out n00bs where i can if the guild is quiet, its quite fun sometimes... (especially when they try activating a desert-porter for the first time rofl)
for the most part n00b teams are just frustrated, they are really glad of the help more often than not.
i was teh huge n00b once, now I guild leader, so I see n00bs teams as good member farming grounds
but when the n00bs insult you.. thats when it becomes dumb.

It's ok for people to stand around in outposts/towns and do nothing. I can understand if you have to AFK for a few minutes or something. Some people go to a town, then leave their computer for a long time. I don't understand why people do that...why not log off if you have to go away for a while, or at least wait in LA or Draknor's so you don't have to worry about people inviting you or not.
All the more reason to institute a LFG interface, so people forming parties can see at a glance, who in the area is looking for what mission/quest or just standing around.
