Yes, this is the one case where I will actually say, "Runescape ftw."

It can't really be all that widespread. I've played 4 characters all the way through the game (played, not ran), and I've never had it happen to me once. Nor has it happened to any of my guildies. Maybe because we feel "let the buyer beware" and believe that it's our responsibility to make sure that we are getting what we pay for/getting paid what we are supposed to get paid?
As to bartdude - yeah - it happens, and I'm sorry. You learned your lesson, and there's no safeguard that they can possibly build to make sure that you are trading for what you think you are trading for - aside from the mouseover. Sorry it happened to you.

There seems to be a bunch of wannabe scammers trying the plat to gold switch when trading green items, people simply should be careful.
Someone tried to give me 90 gold for Rago's staff a few days ago (he entered 90 plat initially and made the swap reeeeeally fast). I cancelled trade and spammed his name in all warcamp districts to warn others to not fall for it.
Funny detail: I sent him a PM telling "I'm reporting you for scamming, loser", and he replied:
"You can't use such strong words, I have children in the house!". Sounds about right ;D. His children are allowed to watch daddy try to scam people in online games, but not see him being called loser for it.

tbh it was my mistake but then i put that down to having trust in the human spirit. i should know better being we also run a cod2 clan and b4 that a cod clan who were in the top 10 for busting cheats at punksbusted.
this is the 1st time i came across ne1 trying to pull a scam and this is my 3rd char. all i can say is in future i'll be more careful but as my guild friend said above, i only came here to warn people about this person not to cause a huge incident. tho it's made some interesting reading

Wow, glad to hear about this possible way to be scammed! Anet should definitely change the way trading is done if it is at all possible for someone to switch an offer after you hit accept or simultaneously.
With all my playing, I haven't been scammed like this to date. But there's a reason for that. I never buy anything from others, I only use what I find myself or a close friend gives me. And I never sell anything to others. If I find an expensive rune or an ecto I sell it to an AI merchant or trader. Prices are maybe lower, but they don't seem to scam. I'd rather not use something that I didn't find myself, and I just can't be bothered trying to sell something to another player. And with what I am reading on this thread, I don't think I will start to, either.

Any 1 been shopping in a market and been done like this?? You must have seen them on tv at least.
Big market stall selling PS2's for £50. Every1 puts up money, money is collected and goods put in bag (sealed). Told not to open until get home - And people do it, they accept it. They pay the money, get a bag, open it at home and bugger all in there. Call them stupid, trusting, ignorant or whatever. It happens in life and in game, if you're not paying attention people will scam you, period.
I am a very trusting person (too trusting for my own good sometimes) so I makesure I doublecheck everything. Its unfortunate, but then thats life - some people wanna get something for nothing, its up to you to make sure that they dont!
