I am not saying I am as "uber" as the top 100 guilds, in any way shape or form, but it goes to show that one can think along the same lines as them. The difference in rank comes with, in my humble opinion:

a) Voice Comms
b) Practice, and frequently playing together.

I think it was great to watch the different setups, and how the great guilds go about their business; I was also astonished to see that not all of these top guilds are amazing, and some made elementary mistakes and poor decisions.

It truly is compulsive viewing.

What's a Tele again?

EDIT: The know-it-alls in the Observer Chat crack me up.
Quoted for truth. How many air ele spells can you take that are original to a certain build? Orb, then followup with enervating/strike. Same for most other builds as well.

Top guilds = top guilds because of their coordination with each other and their tactics on certain guild halls or tombs maps.

what if you discovered the 55 monk build? would you let anyone watch you just because you were killing stuff all by yourself in the under world? I think not. You might tell your friend, but they might leak it, and then poof, everyone knows it and for a time you were actually good. When you're doing GVG against someone, that's one thing, but letting people just blatantly look at really good builds just so that they can steal them... bad idea. People can counter you easily.

I'm playing Elem for the first time so I ask a friend who's a pretty good Elem what a good air build is. It's basically orb followed by enervating / strike, then a random elite. So I'm doing decent with the build but then he's like, "It's a custom build, I don't want you to use it anymore."

WTF? Am I not supposed to use eneverating / strike / orb anymore?

Also shows how crappy the matching system is. Don't know how many times I've seen Unranked guilds vs 50+ rank guilds.

I think that the observer mode is a good thing. I was watching the top ranked guild doing a guild battle tonight, and I was simply amazed by their co-ordination. They were using 2 Rangers with a spike build (which I had never seen in action before). I just sat there and watched these 2 players perfectly co-ordinate their actions. Aside from learning the build (which is in and of itself useful), I also learned a thing about Ranger Spike. If I had a better connection and TS, I'm pretty sure I could learn to do that. Even better, I learned a bit more about Guild Battles.

I say, if people can learn the game better from the Observer mode, then won't that make the game better overall?

Oh, and a side note about the observer chat: It's extremely funny when the guys from one of the groups jumps in and starts screaming "LOOKIT THAT GUY (refering to themselves)! HE'S JUST OWNIN THEM!"

Ecks Dee, good buddy.

i love and hate obs mode
love: i get to see some intertaining gvg battles
i dont fight in tombs so i get to see what its like in there
people who just got stomped comming back to give commentary

hate (this list is much longer, but doesnt mean i hate more then i love obs mode:
people asking stupid questions, dont these people know how awsome the internet is?
people complaining people watching are gonna take builds, like the newbs are gonna become uber by stealing builds
people asking what guild theif does
people asking what a guild lord does
people asking what the flag is for
people asking what the repair kit is for
people yelling at the guilds fighting like they can hear them
people asking what a smurf guild is
people asking why there are so many w/me and w/e and no wammos
people asking what iway is (thats just uncalled for, who possibly havent heard iway before by now?)
people asking what pressure builds are
people asking what ranger spike is (almost as bad as asking about iway, these people honestly scare me
and last and by far the worse PEOPLE BASHING THE GUILDS FIGHTING LIKE THEY ARE POSSIBLY EVEN CLOSE TO BEING AS GOOD AS THE GUILDS FIGHTING, shut up people you are a complete newb compared to the top 100 guilds

Well I used to play lots of FPSes and the spectator mode made finding out how a good player works easier, but it still takes skill and dedication to master the actual handling. In otherwords, people might figure out how to do it, but it's still up to them on how well they do it. I think it's a good idea, maybe there should be like a "guild preferences" when creating or managing a guild and you can just check a box that disables spectator mode on your guild though.

Hi,

I like observer mode. It allows someone who plays guild wars like me (PvE) to get an idea of what PvP is like. I have played this game for 4 months and I only have one character (W/Mo) so it's interesting to see some new skills in action. .

I think that people who are worried about their *precious* builds being stolen need to realise it's not *your* build

"Oh no!, my uber-leet build is stolen. . . Boo Hoo!"

its a good idea from Anet and works quite well and as other people have said 2 teams could have the exact same build but they could both use it very diffently so copying builds isnt really a problem

it also does show the poor matching system (i watched the rank 3 guild win over 1000 ranked guild in less than 5 mins)

Don't think good match ups will actually be good. I saw a rank 4 vs 3 yesterday, oh boy, rank 4 team got ganked quickly, and most of or all of rank 3's team were there, and lost in 3 mins.

well at least now my female chars can sit in grotto and talk with friends and not get humped on every 5 seconds...

but i dont like being in observer mode as much anymore. 90% of the people in observer mode know absolutely nothing about the worthless garbage that comes flying from them trying to talk like they know what PVP is.

example: (watching an IWAY vs a balanced build vs a spike in alter match in halls)

Observer 1: OMG how did they get here with no monks
Observer 2: the red team needs monks
Observer 3: OMG u guys are noobs, any good team can win with no monks
Observer 2: no, i beat the game 5 times and win halls
Observer 4: Wheres halls?
Observer 1: OMG u nub, learn to pvp
Observer 5: IWAY FTW!!!! they gonna pwn jooz
Observer 2: Dude i know how to PVP, im rank 14
Me: ...

I discovered in the first few seconds the very first time I went into ObMode to turn off chat. Now I watch the game & everything is nice & quiet. I instantly got turned off by the idiots in chat soooo... NO MORE CHAT.

If I really want to talk to someone there is always whisper & guild chat.

lol, yep. There should be a /bitchslap emote to disrupt 'humpers'. Humping is By Invitation Only.

/ontopic

When I'm observing, I usually follow a single person for a while. I wish I could see the person being targeted by my observee.

And how much damage they were doing, too.

I can see what skills they are using, and hence I can figure out their build. But I would rather follow the strategy by seeing who they are casting on and how much it hurt.

I want total exposure for both teams. Just like I was watching football/basketball on TV. The only thing that should be private is the chat and voice for each team.

I like this mode, i don't really pay attention to the builds because I usualy like to create my own. I like it because now whenever im bored I can watch people in tombs who are actualy... well you know, successful.

The best part is when people try to talk to the people doing the pvp because they don't notice the 15 minute delay and say stuff like "Hey *dude pvping* what build are you using"... "please answer me".... "What a fag trying to keep it for himself"... "Hey everyone *dude pvping* noob who wont share his build"

Thats always good for a laugh

Observer mode should be consent-based.
