If you plan to join the American server (lets not forget Canada uses it as well)
Actually, most of the Canucks I know who play GW have joined me as expats on the Euro servers. It's easy for us, since most Canadians are bilingual(*).

I will give you one peice of important advice... the local chat... turn it off and never put it back on.
Quoted for truth. If you're playing with PUGs, consider turning team chat off too.
[*]That is to say most of us understand both English and American.
wow ok im american, i almost never see any other languages other then english (or american w/e u want to call it) i do see people speaking in leet and such but never seen alot of other languages. as to the turn off local chat comment. only if u are in main towns such as LA and Droks! those are the absolutle worse. beacons perch is bad as well as everyone wants a run to droks. most places arent to bad but there are alot of insults flying around if u screw up once. really id just stick to the Euro server as ya IWAY is everyehwere. i have never once got to HoH w/o seeing atelast 3 IWAY groups. i hate IWAY, its stupid and annoying. id just stick to EUro Servers if i were u.
Well, I noted that I kindly asked that person to speak english.
Besides, I'm from Sweden and people here speak swedish, I try to talk english to everyone unless I know that only swedish people are in my party.
English is international language, speaking it to unknown people on internet is polite, talking your own language assuming that everyone knows it is rude in my opinion.
Almost everyone I've played with speaks english. I have played with a few people from Mexico (I assume so since it was in one of their IG name) that spoke Spanish, but they had a friend with them that translated to English for the rest of the team.
I myself am from Europe, and we have several servers like English district 1-15, spanish, french, and probably more.
I dont understand why this does not exist in the American servers. Since ArenaNet created those language specific districts knowing so many languages are spoken in Europe, why didn't they do the same for the American servers (for Canadians who speak French, and Latinos who speak Spanish, etc.)?
I have a Spaniard and a few Mexicans in my guild. The Mexicans are located in the American server of course, and it would be nice if they could meet with other people who speak Spanish and talk in the local chat without having some dips*** telling them to speak English or "americkan" all the time. EVERY time someone has spoken Spanish in the local chat, something like that happens. It might be called "American Server", but at the rate things are going, Spanish is going to be the official language of the US......
mmm , easy bro , acount setings , change territory - american .. everyone skeaps english .. but then ... there are ass holes of corse , its america.
i changed to american for 2 big reasons , a lot more people playing , and better conection , i live in south china. im not chinese , im european.

Neoteo, as I remember I contacted you before to ask about your guild... Well, even we don't put up a guild we could try to play together sometimes.

Been quoted a lot, but hey? What's one more? It's true. Especially that wammo language. I saw a pair of them that seemed to also speek NOOBLISH (funny that they only spoke after I insulted them :P)
Ok, to answer the original question...
I'm European (Belgium) and play on the US Server.
I tried the European server, but prefer the US server. There are not as many people playing on European server and since the districts are divided into language groups (English, French and Spanish i think) it reduces the amount of people even more. That leads to less possibilities to sell/buy too and finding a PUG.
To react to that accusation of racism.. My question is: Do you get into these groups with Spanish and French people who dont speak English in the English districts? If so, I understand it's very annoying for communcation and maybe even "arrogant" of them to refuse to speak English. However, you cannot say that it's arrogant if YOU are the one playing in French districts.. and expect the others to speak English.
If in English district, speak English.
If in French district, speak French.
AND yes, you will see Chinese, Spanish and sometimes French (very rarely though) on the American Server too, but not in a PUG! Everyone speaks English here to improve communication.
Btw in my guild it's like 33.3% Europeans, 33.3% Americans and 33.3% Asians. Perfect combo, and we all speak English Plus I know a few Swedish here
So I would say, give the US server a try, if you dont like it, you can always go back to the European server afterwards (you can change 5 times total).
If in English district, speak English.
If in French district, speak French.
.
The issue is, when you play in Arenas, all countries are mixed together for the random teams, regardless of the district you currently are. So you can fall upon a really good mix of different languages.
If the majority of your team speak a language, you follow or not, but don't ask them to speak another language. The statement "Everybody in the world speak English or like speaking English coz it's "international language"" is wrong. And you CAN play with foreigners without speaking english, if you start to chat when in battle instead of following what's happening on your screen anyway, there are great odds you loose.
On the European servers, we have districts for English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
If you play in random arenas, you could be in a team with anybody from any of these servers.
In Europe, there are one hell of a lot more than 5 languages, so it is extremely common to see Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Croatian, Rumanian, Hungarian etc. etc. on the English servers. Not everybody speaks English fluently, and many people from France and Germany etc. play on English servers early in morning/late at night, because their own servers are empty.
I think it is great to have so many cultures participating in the game, but I do feel sorry for those people who have their own language, yet not their own server.
Please remember that not everyone is bilingual or a polyglot, and that English is NOT the only language in the world.

Hmmm, yes and no, there are two sides of the coin. Rude it is to state that someone should speak english instead of their mother tongue. But if what is being said has to do with the tactics and strategy of the team, then it only makes sense to all stick to the "common" language of the group. Perhaps the french players couldn't speak english well enough, which means that there was no common language. But in most instances, english IS the common language of Europe. I know, I have lived and worked in Germany and am now living in Denmark, but I come from neither of these countries. Like it or not, English is the most common language when several nationalities are trying to communicate with each other.
Even if the conversation was not really intended for the fighting strategy of the group, I find it extremely irritating to be playing in a group in the European English districts when two or more party members are talking to each other in a language I don't understand. Why? Because a lot of my GW enjoyment is the human interaction that occurs between party members. And if I don't understand what is being said, then there is no possibility for interaction from my part. Playing with people that insist on talking in a party in a language I don't understand is to me worse than playing with a few party members who never say anything at all. In both situations I would make a mental note to try to not party with these people again in the future. Why? Boring!
Ok I didnt know all districts were mixed together and now I see the problem more clearly. This can be a real issue indeed, but like Coolsti says, English IS the language most Europeans speak or learn as their second language! And I understand that it can be really irritating when others start to discuss strategy in a language other than English. I also understand that not everyone speaks English.. So it's a dilemma for which I dont see a solution yet!
All I can say is, on American server I have never had this problem before.

Totally agreed. I rather have people try to talk really really bad English than being shut out completely. And it does happen all of the time, so often that I've given up on the competition arenas altogether and that was the only PvP I cared about in the first place.
Sorry if this has been mentioned already i havent read all of the post because im um..lazy. You dont need to buy the US import version. You just set your region to US in options. Its in edit account after you log in and there you go; you're american
I personally think it is sorta rude not to speak the language of the server but it does'nt really annoy me or anything (just giving my opinion).
Just as a side note, Viruzz, I see people speak Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish on English Servers all the time. I have no problem at all with this, as there are no Scandanavian servers.
I fail to see how you can get angry at French/Spanish people who play on their own servers religiously, but are not always grouped with speakers of their mother tongues in Arenas.
Not everyone speaks a second language; not everyone's second language is English. It is my experience that people from Britain are less likely to speak a second language than from anywhere else in Western Europe.
I am fortunate, French is my first language, but I started learning English at three years old; not everybody has this advantage.
Please try to be a little more considerate of other cultures.

You're mistaken here, German is actually the language most europeans speak or learn, in Holland we learn English, German and French, disadvantage of being a small country, but almost all the eastern european countries have German as a second language they get taught in school.
As you aren't on the european server u can't check, but believe me there are usually more german districts then english ones in any big town, during wintersday La-english went up to 34, german all the way to 43
However ppl do flock to the english ones in the early morning and late evening, it's a sort of meeting place when you can't find ppl to do that difficult missions.
