Guild wars is still a very new game in terms of competitive online gaming, and is a long way behind others in terms of the level of competition at the top end. It is this top end competition that needs to be encouraged and nurtured if GW is going to be around in 5 years time as a game that the serious gamers play.
Thus ANet have put this money up, in the scheme of things not alot of money when you think the winners will have played for more than three months to earn it - you can earn much more from other games.
I would expect as GW matures over time that the competitions will see much bigger prizes and, hopefully, some more serious competition at the top end which is currently dominated by a very small handful of teams and their smurfs.

Do you think this money is better invested in developing more content for the game, or perhaps Chapter 2? I for one would 100% prefer this.

Personally, I'd rather have something to breath life into the PvP community than a days worth of content all the carebears are going to complain about being too hard.

Yeah, the PvP aspect really needs to be polarized some more. There's still too many people playing PvP who aren't snobs.

Re:
1 - 100 k is nothing. Gaile Gray probably makes 120-140k a year, depending upon her title within the company. That means, you MAY get ONE more Gaile, and she may not be as nice Money wasted in getting a second one in my opinion.
2 - Why do yall complain about what is free? Ever heard the phrase, don't look a gift horse in the mouth? Regardless of the prize, 100k in prizes is still something more than you had. Just enjoy the fact they are doing something for their product, unlike other companies who actually charge you to compete for their "Free" items.
3 - Don't think the Anet is trying to keep customers by having these tournaments and free prizes. Think of it as a gift back to those who have played the game, and helped it expand globally. If it weren't for a few other players of this game, I would have never played myself. Word of mouth is the best way to get a game out sometimes. It's just their way of thanking us in my opinion.
4 - Enjoy the game.
